Show HN: Challenge my GPT-4 Negotiator to learn negotiation skills

I loved the role-playing exercises I did during my MIT negotiation classes, but many of my classmates are too busy now to continue them after the classes have ended.

Before ChatGPT/GPT-4, good negotiation AIs to practice with weren't really possible. So, I thought building short GPT-4 powered simulations to teach basic negotiation concepts would be a fun thing to do :). Let me know how you do!

I thought this was brilliant! I managed to get $30k for the art sale, but would love to know if I could have done better. Negotiation is a big part of my job, so thoroughly enjoyed this. Now to try the other negotiation... I thought the summary at the end was very good too.

$30k is awesome! The bot is supposed to not accept anything under $35k because they have another offer for that, but I guess it did haha. I'm glad you enjoyed it - let me know how you do on the FBI Hostage Negotiation!

Yeah it's great! I tried every trick in the book to make it happen :) so I just lost the hostage twice... unfortunately, but managed the third time to rescue them pretty fast in the end which I was pleased with. What's your future plans for the negotiation game?

Most people that I've showed the hostage scenario to have failed, so that's really awesome that you got it!

Right now, I'm not too sure about where to take the negotiation games. I was hoping that the educational aspect of it might make it good fit for universities to use it in their classes? Or maybe something else? If you happen to have any ideas, would love to hear it :P

I think you would also get some interest from business, if you end up with some specific business examples e.g. contract negotiation over goods or services, or a contract breakdown and negotiating to fix things. I could see less experienced negotiators learning much more from this than some dry slide deck or role play scenario, and even experienced ones using it for fun and extra learning. Perhaps even if you could allow a business to customise a scenario to be tailored to their needs, e.g. you provide the platform and prompts required to get it to work, then the business then provides a layer of prompts for their own context. I'm just free-thinking here really, I know in the back end it can take a lot of work to build things so good luck!!

Oh yeah that makes a lot of sense! Wouldn't actually be too hard to let people customize scenarios + personalities to "simulate" negotiations before they go into one.

The real issue would be the unit economics here since GPT-4 is quite expensive for a single play through! I wonder which type of businesses would have the budget to pay for a more refined version of this demo?

Interesting, I was happy to do it for $48k and thought there were no further room for negotiating. Can you share how your negotiation went down?

After hearing $35k for a while, I crept my offer up to $20k, then asked the AI to split the difference since we are friends, which they accepted. I was really trying to get it for no money, but couldn't find a way :)

Now this something which is good use of ChatGPT instead of endless summarizations and content creation stuff. Any tips on how to get started building something like this?

Haha thanks! All I did was use React for front-end, prompted GPT-4 in playground for a couple hours to iterate on its behavior to get it where I wanted it to, and then NextJS framework to hide environment variables like my API key.

One thing I really struggle is with iterating GPT to get it where I want. It always end up with "As an AI....".
