smanuel··on Heroku DX: The New Heroku Developer Experience
How does the new Dashboard + Metrics compare to using the New Relic plugin?
smanuel··on Can a Computer Replace Your Doctor?
It can, but not now. Maybe in 10 - 15 years (or more). The numerous available online (mobile apps) symptom checkers are a good indicator of the current state of how a computer can solve your health/medical issue. Computers need a lot more systematic data which is currently not available.

A blod post on this topic: https://medium.com/@iamhealee/you-should-use-symptom-checker...

smanuel··on Steve Jobs Introduces the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch
> Take the metro / subway in any big, affluent city these days, and look around you. What do you see? People whose eyes are glued to their phone screens, oblivious to the persons around them, looking for "human warmth" in their virtual companion. That's really not the society I want to live in.

This old photo (http://imgur.com/WkHHpZ1) comes to mind when I read this. Don't blame technology.

smanuel··on Holographic universe experiment begins
I really enjoyed reading "The holographic universe" (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0062014102) some time ago but how can an experiment which is entirely based on science, physical laws, empirical evidences and so on, prove something which would make all these means... meaningless. This looks like a paradox to me.
smanuel··on Which Is Closer: Local Beer or Local Whiskey?
I guess your statement would be as much valid if you replace "meth" with "math".
smanuel··on My open source brain data
Cool project. I think it would be really cool if you try to interpolate some EEG data (collected through MyndPlay, Emotiv or sth else).
smanuel··on Steve Ballmer steps down as board member at Microsoft
I'm lost. Which one is first and which one is first? Cloud is important and has to be first. But if cloud is first then mobile is first. And vice versa.
smanuel··on When Patients Read What Their Doctors Write
> There are a lot of reasons for that, but, IMO, the most glaring is people abdicating their health reonsibility to somebody else (whether doctors, pharmaceutical companies, or government guidelines). As people take control back...when they realize they have some control...they will become more healthy.

I couldn't agree more. I've blogged about this some time ago (shameless plug)

"We need to start taking care of our health data": https://medium.com/@iamhealee/we-need-to-start-taking-care-o...

But responsibility and control is only one side of the coin. There are numerous problems which are happening behind the curtain and people normally don't care about (EHR software compatibility, sometimes lack of EHR software, different attention to detail when doctors record the health data, etc.)

smanuel··on The 30-year-old health sector billionaire
Working 60+/80 hours a week for a health sector company is not really a good idea. Every mistake could cost a lot (lives?)

And I think people who work that much are more likely to make mistakes.

smanuel··on Edward Snowden: The Untold Story
Everyone seems to be trying to reinvent the scrolling these days. Meanwhile the craigslist's designers and UX engineers (if there are any) are having hell of a fun.

smanuel··on Why Microsoft? Microsoft vs. Linux
It's getting embarrassing. Are the marketing folks at MS completely clueless or maybe I'm the clueless one?

First it was the "Don't get scroogled" campaign, now this.

Oh, and the iPhone funeral fiasco too.

smanuel··on Goodbye to Sasha Shulgin, Godfather of Psychedelics
But first start with something less harmful but which could have similar effects. e.g.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holotropic_Breathwork

smanuel··on Goodbye to Sasha Shulgin, Godfather of Psychedelics
Completely forgot about Albert Hofmann. Yes, he absolutely deserves the title.
smanuel··on Goodbye to Sasha Shulgin, Godfather of Psychedelics
Timothy Leary wrote "The Psychedelic Experience" in 1962. Aldous Huxley wrote "The Doors of Perception" in 1954. And I guess there are many other books on psychedelics which I haven't read.

But still it's a chemist, who earned the title by writing a book about psychedelic chemical compounds and their effects, but which is not as... psychologically deep as other books (some of which have been written almost half a century ago) on psychedelics.

smanuel··on Aspirin could dramatically cut cancer risk, according to biggest study yet
Is there a stomach which can handle aspirin regularly (even in small doses) without the risk of getting ulcers and bleeding? If there is... where's the line to get one? :)
smanuel··on Goodbye to Sasha Shulgin, Godfather of Psychedelics
Is he considered the Godfather of Psychedelics because he was a chemist? I've read a lot about Timothy Leary and John Lilly who have also done a lot about psychedelics but I've never seen them referred to as Godfathers. Yes, they were psychologists and not chemists but I think that doesn't diminish the value of the research they've done. Don't want to make this sound as a rant but rather try to understand the criteria behind such... titles.
smanuel··on Introducing the Internet.org App
Yep, and all the hypocrisy...

Internet.org — Every one of us. Everywhere. Connected.

When the blatant truth is:

Internet.org — Every one of us. Everywhere. Connected. Through Facebook. Because we need MOAR users! To serve MOAR ads.

Chrome. On Ubuntu.

> Everything shows up as HTML5 video for me.

That's weird.

smanuel··on MacBook Air Stickers
And they can absolutely use it as a fallback for HTML5 video.

Using WMP Plugin, RealPlayer plugin, QuickTime, Flash, etc. is so... 2007.

MS also has(had) Silverlight but at some point they just stopped using it and most of the videos I've seen recently on their site(s) are HTML5 (no plugins required).

But not Apple. Everything (I've seen) on their site is QuickTime.

smanuel··on MacBook Air Stickers
A little bit off topic but... can someone please remind me why does Apple continue using this horrible thing called QuickTime Plugin?

smanuel··on Don't be Google
The other form is when you try to be very objective and tell the whole truth. Try this next time when you pitch an idea or try to explain the benefits using some product / service. I bet there will be a lot of yawns and eye rolling. That's why engineers are usually not the best people to present something new (a product or just an idea). Because they try to be objective and stick to the facts. And most of the time people don't want that, they want excitement. And excitement needs some lying.
smanuel··on Don't be Google
> Advertising is inherently evil

Advertising in its basic form is a lie. When advertising you never speak about the competitors who are better than you, the flaws in your offering, you extrapolate your advantages, you "fake it until you make it" and so on, but... "evil"?

Just like Churchill's saying about democracy (democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried), I would say the same about advertising.

Advertising is the worst form of informing people about what you can offer, except all other that have been tried.

Telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Pfft, that would be so boring.

smanuel··on Why Google Made Its Self-Driving Car So Darn Cute
> The cute design minimizes fear about the risks of self-driving vehicles

I'm sorry but no cute design can repair the damage done by this episode of Silicon Valley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eAONrlcfJg

Sorry Mr. Car

smanuel··on Famo.us University
Ok, can these guys actually release something which doesn't require login, beta subscription, waiting for months to see something, etc. Sorry for the rant but... seriously, I think they'll be much more successful if they just do something that works and solves a problem, show it publicly and then try to build all the excitement.

What do you mean? Actually private network did not exist on DO until recently and it's been on Linode for a long time.

smanuel··on MongoDB is to NoSQL like MySQL to SQL - in the most harmful way
> The article is about handling MongoDB if it grows above 100GB. It gives me the impression that scaling MongoDB to that size is a serious issue.

I don't think so. It gives me the impression that 10gen (MongoDb Inc.) has made a mistake how to present "handling MongoDb over 100GB".

> example: global write lock up to release 2.2

Why are we still talking about this? It's not global write lock any more, okay? Stating previous inefficiencies doesn't bring much value to the table.

> At this point it was inevitable to see MongoDB as a popular, yet poor representative of it’s species.

Show me the real arguments! Show me the real arguments!

smanuel··on Co-Founder of Youtube makes his first comment in 8 years
Let me rephrase "google is afraid of facebook" because it obviously leads to a lot of falses. Google would like to keep the marketing money that goes to Facebook back at Google.
