smackeyacky··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
I used to like to buy TDK tapes second hand and listen to the mixes. Almost every one had something obscure on it I loved but they have dried up over the last 12 months.
smackeyacky··on Red Hat being phased out of existence?
If they can vibe code that then so can anybody, it makes it a valueless exercise.
smackeyacky··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
I know of a DOS machine at a wool testing place that uses an ISA card based imager for measuring the micron and other things. They also have a supporting DOS machine with a dBase looking database on it. When I spoke to the owner he didn’t really understand the risks involved in running ancient hardware and in fact had a storage room with period PCs in it if the machines failed. He didn’t have much of a backup plan for the imaging hardware though.

My opinion is that if these guys are still running this gear, they already have a strategy in place (no matter how flawed) and would likely retire before throwing money at something they consider a non problem.

Good luck with the idea. It likely is a tiny niche market with customisation for every customer and given they are normally hardware constrained AI may not be much of a help.

All of them have no money as well.

smackeyacky··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Personal insults only weaken your argument.

Palantir could decline to build this and so could everybody.

If somebody proposed to you that you could have a lucrative contract in exchange for an intrusive system that provides a bedrock for authoritarianism, you are arguing it’s perfectly ok because if not you, somebody else will and that makes it OK.

It doesn’t.

Again, absolving the company that built it and runs it. They weren’t coerced into doing so and must share the blame for the evil that was created.
smackeyacky··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
I absolutely knew you’d bring up guns and gun making but it’s not a valid comparison. If the gun companies were also involved in the actual shooting of people part that would work.

Palantir were in no way obliged or coerced into making an evil thing, they just decided being evil for money was ok.

smackeyacky··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Are you implying that the demand for these evil services absolves the suppliers from any moral responsibility? Simply because “if we don’t do this somebody else will”.

It’s an evil service and no matter who requests it or supplies it, doing so is an evil act.

smackeyacky··on Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived
I feel like the business apps are an easier rewrite these days rather than imperfectly recreating the runtime environment.

Now your customer has two problems instead of just one.

smackeyacky··on UFO Series Home Page: "UFO" TV Series from 1970
There is a torrent. Objectively it’s uneven but the I’m biased toward it because I watched it on release. Space Bastard Travis is a terrible villain but Servalan is very attention getting. The simple fact that none of the characters felt safe made it compelling on first viewing and Avon’s cynicism vs Blake’s idealism makes for satisfying viewing despite the obvious budget constraints on the screen. Definitely seek it out but don’t expect Firefly production values.
smackeyacky··on Ray Ozzie and the Optimism of Being Early
I don’t know about this. If you were doing a recipe app on DOS likely you were using dBase or a clone of it and all those apps looked the same because of the character based limitations of the PC. Borland environments were similar.
smackeyacky··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
When was the last time you saw a Chinese laundry?
smackeyacky··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
I don’t think we have a wide enough Overton window when it comes to economic discussions, the neoliberal revolution of the 1970s killed a lot of little levers of economic control in most post social democratic countries. Instead we were promised a new age of free trade and economic liberalism and one single, shiny lever to control the speed of the economy like the governor on a steam train.

Yet here we are 50 years later suffering booms and busts just like before. Nobody seems to want to acknowledge the failure of 50 years of industrialisation destruction that in hindsight was the inevitable outcome of open trade and the retreat of governments.

To answer the question, yes I think there are other options and trade barriers need to be part of that conversation.

smackeyacky··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
I don’t understand why central banks seem to use such a blunt object like interest rates for every inflation problem. It would make sense to rise if the cause of inflation was accelerated economic activity, not price rises due to supply restrictions. How does hurting mortgage holders even more help with not starting wars? All it can do is have a double dampening effect on the economy as people pull back their discretionary spending.

Using interest rates for this kind of inflation is guaranteed to cause a recession.

smackeyacky··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
West Indian migration put an end to that[0]. Unintended side effect of good old British racism.

smackeyacky··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
We’ve seen this doesn’t work nearly as well as the homogeneous culture people would like us to believe. Ambrose Bierce nailed it (paraphrasing) the bible is an excellent book for your neighbour.
smackeyacky··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
It is a total fantasy that Australia would throw back in with the ghost empire that is the UK. They literally have nothing to offer us apart from a figurehead head of state.
smackeyacky··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Almost the entire tech crew who were working for Honeywell in Canberra seemed to be from a team that worked in Port Moresby in the late seventies to maybe the early eighties. Their stories were mostly a mix of late stage colonialism and machete terror.
smackeyacky··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
There is no apt response other than for the over 50% of Americans who voted in favour of their current situation to all suddenly change their minds about gay frogs and space lasers and stolen elections. I can’t see it happening.
smackeyacky··on AI recursive self-improvement might not come so quickly after all
How can these models do anything close to RSI when they can’t even self check their output? Gemini for example is so self confidently wrong about 30% of the time for me on certain tasks. I tell it that its answer is wrong and it issues a mea culpa but goes back to being wrong in short order. I feel like the AI industry is still massively overstating their projections.
smackeyacky··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
Maybe. Perhaps they are trained on the loudest and most extreme of us. I think we saw that with mecha hitler.
smackeyacky··on Don't call yourself an artisanal programmer
Because nobody showed him vi?
smackeyacky··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
Time and progress have overtaken them. At the time they were likely correct but I certainly wouldn’t bother with react native any more when the LLMs have gotten so good
smackeyacky··on Isar Aerospace reaches orbit and deploys payloads on second flight
There are ignorant takes and then there is this. A country that can build the Rafale independently is not to be trifled with.
smackeyacky··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
Boards are not involved in day to day decision making unless something has gone very wrong. The CEO shows up every day.
smackeyacky··on One corner of China’s internet is insisting that the Tang Dynasty never existed
It’s well documented that the handling of dead bodies at the time was relegated to temporary facilities due to the increased volume.
smackeyacky··on Z80 – The 1970s Microprocessor Still Alive (2021)
Slop from the article
smackeyacky··on Xwayland 26.1.0 rc1
So what are the Pop!Is guys doing wrong? Their plain X environment has none of the gaming issues wayland has
smackeyacky··on Xwayland 26.1.0 rc1
Whatever environment Pop!Os defaults to if you tell it not to use wayland
smackeyacky··on Xwayland 26.1.0 rc1
Screen share doesn’t work on my setup. Difficultly: nvidia
smackeyacky··on Xwayland 26.1.0 rc1
Me too. I really wanted to like Cosmic but the hassles wayland causes with ordinary things like zoom is just not worth it. Plus all the progress with gaming that has been made on Linux, wayland ruins. I’m back to X and get off my lawn etc.
