slvrspoon··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2016)

slvrspoon··on Apple Pay on the Web
only support for Safari on touch-id enabled devices. doubt Apple will provide API or any other x-platform support. most impactful for mobile commerce sites without strong App or App traffic.
slvrspoon··on Going dark: online privacy and anonymity for normal people
Identity is required by us (and by most "foundational" financial and phone providers) but for external use with other 3rd parties, not at all. www.abine.com
slvrspoon··on Going dark: online privacy and anonymity for normal people
We (disclaimer i'm a co-founder) does exactly this with our Blur product which includes a "tracker blocker". We crowdsource and test for problems because of 'improperly implemented' tracking code and blockers and dynamically allow just those trackers on key sites. More here: https://www.abine.com/suggestions/
slvrspoon··on Traction Trumps Everything
sorry Michael, this is ridiculous, i like Gabriel but please don't upvote this absolute CRAP here.
slvrspoon··on Abine gets it right. Supports a product fork.
thanks HN readers - any more suggestions are valuable. the debate between opt-in and opt-out is a fair one. i'd point out that Abine extends exactly the privacy cookie features that are the Foundation of TACO. that said, it was too big and abrupt to please the advanced user, and our product needs a lot of work.

what i'm really interested in is HN's advice in building a sustainable privacy company. one that is one the users side and not corrupted by advertising. plausible?

slvrspoon··on What you should know about angel investors and convertible notes
Correct: angel groups and the author are a waste of precious time.
slvrspoon··on Why no one cares about privacy anymore
and that would be: http://wwww.getabine.com :)
slvrspoon··on Why no one cares about privacy anymore
i'd be interested in what the HN community thinks of my current co / hack that's trying to deal 100% with this issue. use "SXEDCRF310" for your invite..
slvrspoon··on Ask HN: Why has humanity failed to innovate in the past decade?
i work with a hacker startup focused on impact of these issues and there is a ton of info there: http://www.givewell.net
slvrspoon··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
i see: - some significant progress against cancer in the tenties and that being a big thing. - growth of a chinese middle class with a voice and some balls and independence - continued problems with islam, terrorists, and the first terrorist small nuclear detonation. - possible but not probably achievements in nanotech or energy on the tech front - wifi data collection on everything as the main tech change in this coming decade. internet and software basically a sideways moving bore and snore - privacy as an issue for the common user
slvrspoon··on Why VCs don’t invest in early-stage consumer companies
this is why Y combinator is important, and the offspring it has spawned in the last 3 years.
slvrspoon··on Identity in the Browser (Firefox)
as a guy with a startup focused on this area for 12 months, i am curious to know what the group thinks about having some form of identity be stored in the cloud by a single company (e.g. google) or managed locally at your PC/phone (stored by NO company) and synched across devices?
slvrspoon··on Ask HN: Does deleting a profile from Facebook ensures that all data is deleted?
the key thing is to not give your personally identifiable info out in the first place. have 2 profiles: one for 'namespace' discovery and 'general friends' and another for real friends and posts that contains no PII links. is there an app for that?
slvrspoon··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring... Students?
my venture backed very early stage startup in cambridge is hiring students who are great coders. email address in my profile.
slvrspoon··on Ask YC: Your favorite startups lately
not to denigrate the smart people and great work done here, but i think this is a pretty depressing list when looked at from on high. this is the creme of the crop of all the yc hacker intelligentsia? suprisingly banal imhop.
slvrspoon··on Reading list for those who love to learn
this list is for people who know very little about what learning constitutes.
slvrspoon··on Hacker News Disease
Wow HN(!) what a discussion. its.. fun.. sort of. Matt: if the philosophical underpinnings of the country you live in.. (e.g. the constitution) agreed with you, we'd have no JURY SYSTEM brother :). believe me, i (and many readers here) share your sentiments often, but respect for formal knowledge must come from knowledge itself, not prior experience or credentials. Also, as a former tech analyst who spent a LOT of time working with the labels in 1998-2000 on DRM and MP3, i can offer you this perspective: the music "industry" as we know it, only existed for a small amount of time between the first, nearly accidental, record sales, and the advent of the digital age. Musical artists as a group have never truly profited much from recorded distributed music - they have made money from live performance.. where, as you look at recent trends with companies such as LiveNation, things are predictably returning to. The execs yachts will be repo'd and among their jury may be the very people they prosecuted.

slvrspoon··on After Credentials
i believe, without having done any research, that credentialism worldwide has GROWN massively as the middle classes try to protect their positions for the selfish reasons PG states. less biased, more thoughtful research would make for a more reasoned debate about an important topic, to Y combinator, and to wider society.
slvrspoon··on Ask HN: you're rich, now what?
check out http://www.givewell.net and you can see which charitable causes actually have GOOD OUTCOMES
slvrspoon··on Dear World, email addresses are not identity
good post. q: so why can't said new system 'work universally' (at least online) by users generating their own "pseudonymous" online identities (name/email/pass/etc) and managing these per site/relying party? the 'generating application' or party has oversight and responsibility for fraud but no others and the user controls key aspects relating to government subpeona type issues. thoughts?
slvrspoon··on Don’t Mistake Ambition for Entitlement
i guarantee Matt will cringe when he reads this in years to come. some valid critiques of the worker-bee lifestyle, but a completely off the mark sense of true utility, value and cross-generation contribution to such. any small amount of serious study of historical "effort" would cause an about face hear. there is little else to say.
slvrspoon··on New Laptop
all laptops have one of the highest failure rates in all of mainstream consumer electronics.

that said: i will add to the groups discussion i am a die hard thinkpad guy. the 'stick button' is SO MUCH more effective than a touchpad. they are fantastic machines. X series are small light and about $1k - $1.5k. i never spend more.

downside: Windows. or worse... VISTA!

slvrspoon··on Wigix: A Stock Market for Your Stuff
they need a lot of users to get liquidity to "make real markets work" but if so, they will beat ebay based on its inherent usntructuredness. worth a try.
slvrspoon··on Ask YC: Here's our web app - What do you think?
agree with Wil. in fact, Wil, shoot me a quick msg if u could.. slvrspoon a t g-mail..
slvrspoon··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
i looked at this space/concept a LOT years ago. lots doing .. nothing made it. except for fortune tellers on keen. even google closed up shop here. Q&A markets are free on yahoo because online non-social info is free and low value. high value stuff is service provision (ie. doesn't scale in time) and the good people get good rates w/out messing with internet customers who tend to flake out (just try renting an apt on craigslist). i don't see a way this works, but sure is a great idea.
