slowrabbit··on Almost one-third of Florida children tested are positive for the coronavirus
Right, but if you read the article, they are asymptomatic with signs of lung damage and probably neurological damage as well from other studies on covid coming out from multiple sources. They are going to suffer long term consequences from Florida's general ignorance. There is no treatment yet, but if your child isn't infected and you have the means, then you should leave Florida and go to a state where they are smarter about social distancing and safety.
slowrabbit··on Edge install undermines Microsoft’s argument that automatic updates are critical
You're using winblows, you gave up your rights as a user already.
slowrabbit··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
Don't arrest them, just fine them an obscene amount to make it unsustainable for them to stay open with the extra cost.
slowrabbit··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
Don't arrest them, just fine them an obscene amount to make it unsustainable for them to stay open with the extra added cost.
slowrabbit··on The Samson Switchblade flying car
Needs 4 wheels to be considered a car. Nice trike though.
slowrabbit··on DrumBot: Real-Time ML Drummer
npm build does work for this on osx and neither does the website... what a busted app. How did this make it to front of hacker news?
slowrabbit··on Ask HN: What's a promising area to work on?
Same money running a fast food joint? You're underpaid bro or you know some crazy overpaid fast food managers. People from science based fields are coming to computer science because those other fields lack job opportunities at competitive pay.
slowrabbit··on Why UTC is used as the acronym for Coordinated Universal Time
Number of french speakers in the world... 76 million. Number of english speakers... 1.5 billion. It should be CUT, fuck the french and bad acronyms.
slowrabbit··on San Francisco Becomes First U.S. City to Pass an E-Cigarette Ban
E-Cigarette Nazis fuck off
slowrabbit··on Show HN: Risp – Lisp in Rust
Should've gone with Lust it's way better than Risp.
slowrabbit··on Why GNU grep is fast (2010)
use ripgrep it's faster https://github.com/BurntSushi/ripgrep and appropriately named
slowrabbit··on Ask HN: Which developers do you closely follow?
Armin Ronacher creator of Flask lucumr.pocoo.org
slowrabbit··on Ask HN: Why do coding bootcamps teach Ruby on Rails and JavaScript?
If they are teaching Ruby and Javascript, then that must be a web development specific bootcamp. Javascript is a must for web, Ruby is a solid backend choice with very high readability.
slowrabbit··on Symbolic mathematics on Linux
lol you think pages in the 90s loaded instantly? No, poor design doesn't have to do with loading time. CSS load time is minimal.
slowrabbit··on Symbolic mathematics on Linux
Why does lwn.net look like its straight out of the 90s? Poor ugly duckling... surely there is a designer out there willing to give you some love.
slowrabbit··on Finding an Alternative to Mac OS X
@wezm You should checkout Enlightenment windows manager over Arch Linux I think it'll be right up your alley based on your preferences https://www.enlightenment.org/
slowrabbit··on Finding an Alternative to Mac OS X
Terminology, the Enlightenment terminal is better than iterm2+Karabiner imo especially when you consider Karabiner doesn't properly work on Sierra.
slowrabbit··on Rust is Software's Salvation
Programming isn't hard, it is super easy. Most of the things we ask machines to do are sequences of simple steps. It's so easy in fact that children do it successfully with little training. Programming well can be hard but only because of the limitations of our current tools. Rust is a good step in the direction of safer systems programming and the people who are hyped about Rust are the smartest people in the room, just like with Bitcoin when it started.
slowrabbit··on Hedge Fund Is Building an Algorithmic Model From Its Employees’ Brains
It's the default case in the USA, not sure about other countries. The contract has to specifically sign over ownership.
slowrabbit··on 15 years trying to make everyone separate HTML, JavaScript, CSS – and then
ReactJS is currently the fastest, most scalable frontend solution available so compared to all that has come before it, it can seem heavy handed. But if you want to build highly scalable apps like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Reddit and Twitter mobile, then losing easy speed gains with every one of the hundreds to thousands of components you build is unacceptable.
slowrabbit··on Ask HN: Is it possible for someone to not be cut out for software engineering?
I have problems with interview anxiety too. Fortunately, you don't need to be good at interviewing or algorithms to be a successful software engineer. I think a lot of the good companies realize good interviewing skills and good programming skills don't go hand in hand. Interview practice can be helpful, but my suggestion is to get into actively developing open source software and add significant code contributions to projects. People care about actual code you have in production, contributing to major open source projects is an easy way to get your code in production and tested across millions of servers. The kinds of companies you ultimately want to work for care far more about what you have actually done code-wise outside of the interview far more than any trivial test they could possibly give you in an interview. If your contributions are significant enough, companies stop asking you to do those lame technical interview tests altogether and just hire you.
slowrabbit··on Coding Challenge for MI5
Thought they'd make this challenge more challenging but I reckon anyone who does solve this is pretty smart and worth hiring for them. Remember its government so they aren't getting or even looking for the best of the best... they don't pay enough for the best.
