Some problems are so complex that you have to be highly intelligent and well informed just to be undecided about them. -Laurence J. Peter

Kruger and Dunning’s explanation is that incompetent people lack the skills they’d need in order to know they’re incompetent. The plural of anecdote is data.

AWS architecting class years ago. Awesome instructor said if you want to save money, start deactivating servers. The ones people use... the admins will contact you right away. The others... people started up and forgot about.
slowhand09··on I accidentally saved my company half a million dollars
"Back in the day" I identified a way to save prob a quarter million dollars a year on my project, funded with your tax dollars. Created a spreadsheet model for the cost, documented it all, and gave it to my boss. He said "I'll look it over". I asked his two weeks later if he'd been thru it. His response was "It looks correct. Nice job." I asked if were going to trial it. Golden response: "No, we don't get paid to save money; we get paid to spend money." And that is when I truly understood Cost+Award Fee contracting with the gov't.

slowhand09··on Adding crushed rock to farmland pulls carbon out of the air
"crushed rock stored 0.15 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare (2.47 acres)". (.15 * 2000lb)/2.47 = 300lb/2.47 = ~121.5lbs/acre of carbon uptake. After applying 41tons/acre of olivine. How is this feasible? You ship railroad cars of volcanic rock dust, spread it on a field, and watch it take up a sandbag size amount of carbon per acre. Is it continuous or a onetime thing?

slowhand09··on Baltimore sues Hyundai, Kia over spike in car thefts
I'll cherry-pick one line. "There's a lot of fundamental issues, ranging from food deserts to lack of public transportation among the poorer areas."

Food deserts in Baltimore? Like the Mondowmin Mall that was destroyed by residents during the Freddie Gray riots? And the companies that tried to rebuild and provide in the neighborhood, only to be robbed constantly to the point that companies gave up for not being able to guarantee workers'safety?

And public transport, in areas where cabbies fear to go, buses take hours, and electric scooters and bikes are routinely dumped in the harbor? Vandalism runs rampant. Bus seats are sliced open, gang members threaten riders, etc.

I hate what poor Baltimore has become. Yuppie white-collar Baltimore thrives, just not in these areas. 35 yrs ago I love going to Balt to play tourist. Nice people, Inner Harbor, restaurants, stores... Employed so many people. Corrupt city government at all levels, corrupt cops, and promotion of a victim mentality are some of the things that brought it down. Baltimore is screwed in general, by its own actions.

slowhand09··on The skills gap for Fortran looms large in HPC
I learned Fortran IV as an introductory language. And read here that it is so elementary, and these other languages that are more complex and faster and better for software engineering, and software engineers are better now... I say why haven't these new and improved SEs devised a translation program to compile Fortran into C++? Back in the 1980s we used software to reverse-build flow diagrams of Fortran programs. They gave us fullpath test coverage, unique variables, reused variables, loop termination conditions etc. Before that on mainframes we'd use JCL (job control language) to output assembler code from submitted Fortran, COBOL, or PL/1.

How can we not feed Fortran source in and receive Language XYZ as output? Perhaps the new wave of ChatGTP will write this and save society.

slowhand09··on 12-year-olds can't buy cigarettes – but they can work in tobacco fields
I grew up in NC. I worked in tobacco a few times for family friends. Many of my schoolmates' families raised tobacco. Or corn. Or soybeans. Many of these kids earned hundreds of dollars over the summer, while supporting the family business. 12 year olds didn't smoke. We bought candy cigarettes.

Farmers and their families and their employees work hard. They work long hours. People on dairy farms work 7 days a week. Cows don't take the weekend off. Crops don't care if its 100 degrees.

I mowed yards. I raked leaves. I helped harvest hay. I built fences and sheds. I helped vaccinate cattle. I helped build the new VFD building. All this as a kid. In 100 degree heat.

We didn't have air conditioning. And you were excused from class on the 1st day of deer hunting season.

This wasn't child abuse. This is living. Some people grew up with AC, color tv, video games, and summer camp. Some grow up and work.

WP is WP. They interviewed me once about firearms. They either misquoted or misunderstood everything we spoke about.
