sloppycee··on Cryptoeconomics 101
Your model is not considering risk; the time value of bitcoin is risk-free positive, whereas any other instrument (in fiat) is either low risk break even, after inflation, or risk positive.

Assuming people are rational actors, they would spend as little as possible and hoard the rest.

So then we need to ask: "how is holding bitcoin different than investing in a similar mutual fund".

Holding bitcoin decreases the money supply driving up value artificially, whereas investing in a mutual fund increases the money supply available for investment and drives economic growth.

sloppycee··on Cryptoeconomics 101
"what's the difference between spending Bitcoin that would otherwise appreciate 5% value per year, vs. spending dollars, thereby foregoing the opportunity to invest in a 5%/year mutual fund?"

Risk. The decreasing yield of mining ensures that the future value of bitcoin will appreciate (assuming demand stays flat). There is no risk that supply might suddenly increase.

sloppycee··on OxyContin's 12-hour problem (2016)
Concerta ER does something like that, I'm curious why it isn't more widely used.

"The system, which resembles a conventional tablet in appearance, comprises an osmotically active trilayer core surrounded by a semipermeable membrane with an immediate-release drug overcoat.

The trilayer core is composed of two drug layers containing the drug and excipients, and a push layer containing osmotically active components. There is a precision-laser drilled orifice on the drug-layer end of the tablet.

In an aqueous environment, such as the gastrointestinal tract, the drug overcoat dissolves within one hour, providing an initial dose of methylphenidate. Water permeates through the membrane into the tablet core. As the osmotically active polymer excipients expand, methylphenidate is released through the orifice. The membrane controls the rate at which water enters the tablet core, which in turn controls drug delivery."

sloppycee··on A Farm Grows in the City
I'm pretty sure the reason your fruits and veggies don't taste right is because they have to be shipped unripened to prevent spoilage. It's why fruit from the farmers market tastes better, it was grown until ripe and shipped locally.

Technologies, like the ones mentioned in this article, change the entire supply chain; fruits and vegetables become "in-season" all year round. They will no longer have to be shipped unripened, and should have a better flavour.

sloppycee··on Where have all the insects gone?
I always just chalked it up to the "there were more thunderstorms when I was a kid" phenomenon (that a large number of people will remember there being more thunderstorms when they were children, despite studies suggesting the number of thunderstorms has remained constant).

It's not really surprising to me though, at least in my neighborhood in Toronto there has been massive urbanization; there are no more wild fields. Parks and even hydro fields (land under power lines) are being mowed bi-weekly, destroying any chance of native plant biodiversity. I haven't seen a mosquito in literally years. But to be fair once you leave the city, not much has changed; insects are still plentiful.

I'd be wary to draw any conclusions from this study, since the areas the researchers set up their monitoring stations may have experienced a similar level of urbanization.

sloppycee··on Oculus accused of destroying evidence, Zuckerberg to testify in VR theft trial
Reading PeopleWare was a revelation for me, in that cliques and politics are inevitable (it's human nature). It's a company's responsibility to put processes & structures in place to create a _better_ workplace by removing artificial leadership and cliques (in-groups).

The idea of a 'flat' organization is laudable, but in practice it is usually a massive failure.

sloppycee··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013)
Or move to Canada, where _despite_ diversity & multiculturalism, people care about each other.

As a Canadian, it's baffling to see how divisive the US is. The irony of it being that social programs like this would actually reduce the feeling you describe ('different from me') by levelling the playing field. Provide everyone the same quality of education, healthcare, and access and what differences are left?

"Maybe we can build a cultural identity that sees fellow citizens as kin instead of just greedy, grabbing hands." - Maybe, if you can build a culture that doesn't deify money.

sloppycee··on New class of galaxy has been discovered, made almost entirely of dark matter
Ah, so 'Gravitational waves' are ripples in spacetime.

But, if gravity itself propagated as a wave (graviton + duality?) could interference explain dark matter/energy?

sloppycee··on New class of galaxy has been discovered, made almost entirely of dark matter
I've always wondered, if gravity is a wave (has it been confirmed?), then there must be areas in space where different waves superimpose.

Would the constructive interference between gravity waves be significant enough to account for 'dark matter'? And what would destructive interference look like (dark energy?)

sloppycee··on Ketamine lifts depression via a byproduct of its metabolism
I had a similar experience, suffered for years with severe depression. Tried every type of drug, nothing was working. But stimulants significantly helped.

Turns out it wasn't depression, but type 2 bipolar. If stimulants are providing relief, you need to see a psychiatrist if you haven't already.

sloppycee··on Reddit removed NSL canary from 2015 Transparency Report
What terrifies me is not the potential data leak, but that the NSA may be obtaining their TLS certificates, bypassing the threat (to them) of "https everywhere".
sloppycee··on Real talk from real computer science teachers
Computer science is the science of the 'theory of computation' (essentially mathematics): proofs of correctness, complexity theory, numerical methods, symbolic logic, etc.

I am glad that your course is called 'computing' and _not_ computer science, since they are usually misconstrued (as in this article). I am all for teaching children how the digital world works, and introducing them to the concepts of electronics, programming etc. but it call it what it is.

Computer science != programming. Programming is an applied skill across nearly all scientific disciplines. Physicists, climate researchers, statisticians, etc, all require programming to do their research.

sloppycee··on Still no flying cars? The future of transit promises something even better
In Toronto we have the collector/express system for the 401, it is still a mess: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f9/Highway_...

At a certain scale congestion is inevitable, whether automated or not, faster traffic will eventually need to merge with slower traffic...

sloppycee··on Recruiters and investors think talent counts for more than determination
ADHD/ADD seems to be common in our industry, a side effect being 'hyperfocus' or what we (as an industry) refer to as 'flow'.

For me, amphetamines actually allow me to productively switch my focus. 8+ hours of hyperfocus, while making me seem like a ninja unicorn rockstar, is just not sustainable and burnout is a real problem.

sloppycee··on What can a technologist do about climate change?
Shockingly, passenger vehicles make up 43% of US greenhouse gas emissions. [1]

Your comment made me look into it since my intuition was that you were wrong (that personal transportation does not contribute _that_ much).

sloppycee··on Obama Encryption Policy Rejects Laws Mandating Backdoors
Why is it considered different from a physical safe? The government already has the ability and laws to compel citizens to provide access, why should it be any different with encryption?

Communism uses suppression as a means to control the population.

I've never considered the converse, using 'promotion' to control the population.

sloppycee··on July 2015 was warmest month ever recorded
Seems there are now three things that can not be discussed rationally: politics, religion and climate change.

It is a perversion of science when a scientific theory is no longer subject to healthy criticism and skepticism.

sloppycee··on Show HN: Turn Your Google Calendar into a Gantt Chart
I think you need to show how it integrates with Google Calendar. Lots of screenshots of your app, but no mention of what benefits are gained by integrating with gcal.

Also, do some research on pricing models; I think some improvement could be made there; maybe a mid tier, ~8-10/mo.

sloppycee··on Show HN: Google Calendar Appointment Scheduling
Would $5/mo be more reasonable?

All the competitors charge $10/mo or more at their starter price, and their free tier is all but unusable (some include ads).

I understand that $10/mo might seem unreasonable for some use cases.

sloppycee··on Show HN: Google Calendar Appointment Scheduling
I think we could help you with that, there is nothing preventing you from embedding your booking page in an iframe.
sloppycee··on Show HN: Google Calendar Appointment Scheduling
I have added a smooth scroll effect that should fix this, thank you.
sloppycee··on Show HN: Google Calendar Appointment Scheduling
Yes but we found that the calendar owner want's to restrict the length of appointment, rather than let the contact select an arbitrary length.
sloppycee··on Show HN: Google Calendar Appointment Scheduling
We are still determining pricing, thanks for the input.
sloppycee··on Show HN: Google Calendar Appointment Scheduling
Yeah, I see that. I will fix that asap.

BTW it is because your email is > 30 characters long.

edit: fixed.

sloppycee··on Show HN: Google Calendar Appointment Scheduling
Yes, absolutely.
sloppycee··on Show HN: Google Calendar Appointment Scheduling
Yes, you can specify which hours you are available.

Also, we are working on a duty calendar feature where you can create appointment slots.

sloppycee··on Show HN: Google Calendar Appointment Scheduling
My first priority is working on a better marketing site, which means a product tour; I realize this is lacking.

Per-domain pricing seems very interesting, I will look in to it, thank you!
