sloak··on Autoscaling Pub/Sub Consumers
Indeed, the signal metric is important. Queue depths or time from queue insert to removal work fairly well as it directly relates to the tasks performed.
sloak··on Show HN: Improve Your Writing – Grammar and Writing for Creators
The first bullet point reads "Learn all the important elementary to advanced rules and errors."

How many of you had to re-read it at least once, or rescan mid-sentence, to understand?

I won't even discuss the second bullet point: "Write skilfully, and write powerful and eloquent blog posts, books, and more."

It's quite disturbing to see this language in a guide that is all about grammar, writing, and the importance of being well-understood.

Or am I just a grump old man?

sloak··on Movie Scripts Ranked by Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level
Scripts let you do interesting analyses. Dialog, action (non-dialog), and directions all have their own syntax. I once wrote a tool that let you pick movies based on dialog complexity vs. ration action/dialog.

You also have to be careful to use the shooting script. The scripts available online are often many generations removed and quite different from the actually filmed scenes.

sloak··on Paulo Coelho advertises on Pirate Bay front page
Would this work if the author/artist were not as famous as Coelho or Louis C.K.?
sloak··on Show HN: Startup Threads Monthly - Subscription Swag Service
It could be totally cool if you considered a "vintage" section, where you sell genuine one-off threads (think JavaSoft, DEC, Windows 3.11, ...)
sloak··on LinkedIn can now use you name and picture in any of their advertisements
For me this is off by default and I have to opt-in.
sloak··on This Site’s Domain is Stolen
I mostly use Google Apps with enom, since it gives me the domain + email & all other google apps goodies "for free".

That said, I want to move a few domains away from GoDaddy but I am a bit confused how to do it the right way. Anyone have a good order-of-events list? I'd hate to lose the domains over a technicality when transferring. [edit: misspellings]

sloak··on Canon announces EOS-1D X: full-frame 18MP, 14 fps, 204,800 top ISO, $6,800
CF cards allow faster writes and can keep up with higher FPS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_memory_cards#Tech...
sloak··on Comcast cuts off customer for going over 250GB of legitimate use
No! "internet is a right" is not bollocks, but "unlimited internet is a right" is.
sloak··on Show HN Parents: StarChart.me — Online star chart for kids
Thanks for the link. It looks like a nicely made app. Can you tell your friend the feedback form on the website is broken? It redirects to a google spreadsheet which forgets your initial form.
sloak··on Want to be a leader? Wash the Dishes When Nobody Else Will.
I think it's a bit of a misquote. I've heard it as the CEO saying something like "since you're under a lot of time press to get the stuff out the door in a week, and I don't know how to code, this is the only thing I can do for you right now"
sloak··on Want to be a leader? Wash the Dishes When Nobody Else Will.
Like Macaulay said, "The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out."
sloak··on Want to be a leader? Wash the Dishes When Nobody Else Will.
Reminds me about the story of Netflix CEO. From http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2011/0...

[... Huffington coaxed Hastings to talk about leadership -- and one early experience that informed his leadership style.

Hastings recalled how, as a 25-year-old software programmer, he would stay up all night, propelled by coffee. He'd leave an array of mugs on his desk. Once a week, he would discover the cups cleaned. One day, he arrived at work at 4 a.m. and walked into the bathroom to discover the company's CEO, sleeves rolled up, washing the collection of nasty cups.

"That whole time, I thought it was the janitor," said Hastings, who said this had been occurring for a year. He asked his boss why. "He said, 'You do so much for this company, this is the only thing I can do for you.' ]

sloak··on 37Signals to retire OpenID for logins on May 1
Simon, I know the work you and others have done and continue to do in the OpenID world, and it's commendable work.

The problem with OpenID and other Open Web work IMO is the sheer number of half-baked specs brought forward. Much more than any other standards group. I don't know why. “The nicest thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from,” like Tannenbaum said. Perhaps there is a general lack of attention span, a ohh-shiny problem, a not-invented-here problem that is particularly rampant in this community.

sloak··on Ask HN: Hacker friendly coffee shops in San Jose
Mission City cafe, 2221 The Alameda. It's in Santa Clara, just outside S.J. Nice vibe, lots of students, open late.

The main library at 150 East San Fernando is awesome. Good coffee in the bottom, ample (private if you want) space in the eight floors. Open late cause it's shared with San Jose State.

sloak··on "50% of firm founders [in Silicon Valley] are foreign born"
I think it is incorrect to assume an immigrant kid faces adversity. Most of the emigration to SV is from well-off families with well-adjusted kids and they settle in well-off areas.
sloak··on We Built Interactive Seating Maps Using Raphael; Please Give Us Feedback
So sweet. Thanks!! Working well in 5.0.342 on Ubuntu 32.
sloak··on This is a story of caching
The real story is in how they push untested code into production just to see what happens. ;)
sloak··on This Is How You Handle Data Center Security
Is there no weakness in depending on the same hand scan systems so many times? It appears a single point of failure.
sloak··on Ask HN: What DSLR should I buy? New/Used?
Full frame sensors almost completely remove the need for tripods. The light sensitivity is so awesome you can shoot up to ISO 64K without too much grain. This means you can take awesome pics in the dark with no shake.

I love the Nikon D700 but it's a bit expensive.

sloak··on Exploring San Francisco and Silicon Valley
Be prepared that SF != Silicon Valley. Different culture, different companies, 1 hour+ commute or so each way.
