slitaz··on A Thank-You Note to the Hacker News Community from Ubuntu
This dislike should be mostly psychological. There are people that got primed to dislike Unity and when they attempted to use it, they struggled because of the 'old dog learning new tricks'.

We saw this with the intro of Gnome Shell, which fractured the community between the old Gnome UI and new UI.

If we continue to split up when something new is introduced, we are doing it wrong.

The message is more like that the desktop is too pricey and does not bring back money, so they end up dealing with the £££-generating options.

Does the desktop on Linux have a viable future?

slitaz··on This could save you from ISP who sells your personal activity online
The ISPs will be selling Web sessions, identified by cookies. The traffic from pyNoise does not mix with the browser session and will appear separate.

It appears it might be better to enable private browsing (aka incognito mode) in order to make your browsing session as short (and unidentifiable) as possible.

slitaz··on Response to conversations about me
I have not been involved in Drupal and do not know this Larry person.

tldr; He was involved in a subculture called Gorean, and has been a master in Master/Slave relationships. One of his Slaves was a severely autistic woman. He talks about BSDM being ok between consenting individuals, etc.

slitaz··on ‘Shell knew’: oil giant's 1991 film warned of climate change danger
There are those that knowingly misinform about climate change for financial or ideological benefit and those that genuinly believe the misinformation.
slitaz··on 3 things the new Nokia 3310 is missing
It still runs Symbian and is not supposed to be some continuation of the old line of software. It was made well clear in their announcement.
slitaz··on Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS released
These are exotic platforms, therefore go for a distribution that supports them.
slitaz··on Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS released
Actually the move to systemd is quite easy. There are cheatsheets available.
slitaz··on Snaps are universal Linux packages
apt packages are so stable because it takes so much effort and time to make them. For example, a new apt package may be pending just because enough time has not passed since it was created.
slitaz··on How to install LibreOffice 5.3 from snap on Ubuntu 16.04 (and others)
Snaps are apps in a container. Why bother with docker containers to run services while you can install everything together on a single computer? Each docker replicates the same rooted again and again.

Just like docker, snaps make sense even if there is some duplication of the libraries. Other benefits outweigh the extra size.

These are autoremoved nowadays.
slitaz··on Succeeding Against the Odds Can Make You Sick
I think it is so straightforward. Chronic stress is bad for the health in general due to the effects of cortisol to the body.

Some people may deal with stress (as Sapolsky describes), so the effects of cortisol are not pronounced.

Those that cannot deal with the stressors, are those most affected and they are those that will admit they are stressed.

It is an issue of people tending to admit something, in a qualitative study.

slitaz··on Ask HN: Is it illegal to hijack the result of an online poll?
These are unscientific polls, and if that poll does not mention it, they do not care much anyway.

If there is a funny aspect in the poll, those from 4chan might pick it up and abuse it for you.

Regarding legality, it is up to local cybercrime laws. In practice, you may get in trouble as a knee jerk reaction to some unexpected and unfortunate outcome of the poll.

slitaz··on Trump Knows You Better Than You Know Yourself
The first line of defence against Facebook mining is not to run FB apps (because they can harvest your likes).

But is it possible for an app to retrieve the likes of a user's friends?

slitaz··on Free Software Foundation Priority Projects
These are too many to be priority projects. Does the FSF have the resources to actually be involved in the development of these projects?
slitaz··on Don’t Tell Your Friends They’re Lucky
When people talk about "luck", they mean a absolutely random event that cannot be influenced in any way. A chaotic event can become less chaotic by controlling or reducing some of the parameters.
slitaz··on Beware of Greeks bearing bonds
Old article. The finance minister he met, was later taken to court for corruption. He escaped any punishment.
slitaz··on Don’t Tell Your Friends They’re Lucky
"luck" is not a good choice as a word here. They mean something like a chaotic event that ended up being positive to them.

Also, just waiting for such a positive chaotic event to happen to you, is probably not the best strategy.

If you make good social interactions that you maintain, then those positive chaotic events are more likely to come your way.
