slicktux··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
Well, the soldering is more for benefiting unified memory. The high speeds require soldered RAM unfortunately.
slicktux··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
Was this status indicator simple vertical bars that were black and white and displayed on an old CRT Monitor? Almost looks like black and white terminal vertical bars (like Alsamixer)?
slicktux··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
That looks like a completely new car with the sub model being Corolla… it looks nothing like the Corolla of today and past..
slicktux··on A warning about 'model welfare'
There are chemical reactions that LLMs lack because they do NOT have a biology. They are just mathematical weights. Now, let’s say we can truly make sentient AI in the future but it does not have the biology that we do. Then it would just be a totally literal, emotion lacking, sentient machine. But then what is sentience? Dogs are sentient to a certain extent and so are dolphins…
slicktux··on Splash-free urinals: Design through physics and differential equations
When I use a urinal I do not aim directly on front but instead to the curved lower part. That helps guide my urine down; virtually eliminating all splash back!
slicktux··on I resigned from Anthropic today
Why are we putting so much weight (no pun intended) on AI companies. At the end of the day the scaled up LLM transformers lack emotion and will… They do as they are told; or more correctly put. They do as they are programmed to do so.
slicktux··on Chicken products recalled in five states due to “false marks of inspection”
We do have regulation on food and safety and the recall is because of those parameters.
slicktux··on Credit Card Rewards Became a $9.2B Wealth Transfer
I believe a similar thing happened with fast food and food delivery fees. It costs money to be listed on the food delivery app so fast food chains started charging everyone the same price to offset the cost of being listed on the apps.
slicktux··on Early Humans Likely Ate Carbs and Sugary Foods
There’s many theories but one that I learned was that women and children provides the bulk of the calories for Early Humans. While the men went out and hunted for meat they also relied on the fruit harvested by the women and children. That would give them the energy necessary for trekking and hunting.
slicktux··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
I recall back in 2016 when the debt was $19 trillion dollars. Here we are 10 years later at double that. “we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt… place economy among the first and most important republican virtues” -Thomas Jefferson
slicktux··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
That’s a rather splenetic response. On paper their contractor requires them to run an Amazon route and wear Amazon logo. Therefore, it’s not Amazon. I’m asking honest question that any court law will ask; cynicism is not part of the scales in court but rather objectivity.
slicktux··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
Honest question; it’s not Amazon that requires them to wear an Amazon vest but rather their contractor. Amazon may set the route but they don’t pay them to run the route. This should be interesting from a legal perspective.
slicktux··on Almost no skill required to cook a steak
I’ve been taken to a steak house for birthday and was shunned for ordering something basic. My reasoning is; a steak is so easy to ruin because it’s so easy to make that it’s just not worth the price to risk eating an expensive crappy steak. So I opt for something more basic that I know will be excellent because of the establishment.
slicktux··on French musician Kavinsky found dead
He was a whole aesthetic and genre. Love his music!

Rest in peace.

slicktux··on Kimi-K3 Technical Report [pdf]
Just like that new jobs created by AI! Localized model maintainer/technician.
slicktux··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
One of the most important things for any profession is experience. Experience comes from learning from your own mistakes or those of others. Those with the best skills can be said to have learned a lot from previous mistakes.

So, how can someone become professional if they don’t learn from their own mistakes? In the case of AI; they will learn to become professional prompters and learn from the mistakes of bad prompts??? I prefer the former not the ladder.

slicktux··on The vintage beauty of Soviet control rooms (2018)
The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station had a similar vintage looking control room. You can see a sad but cool image of the room as it’s being demolished on this nbc article.

slicktux··on QuadRF can spot drones and see WiFi through my wall
I recall reading the original research paper from a student who made the same RF ‘camera’ here in hacker news.
slicktux··on Japan's Hayabusa2 probe to conduct flyby of Torifune asteroid
Thank you! I will definitely check it out!
slicktux··on Japan's Hayabusa2 probe to conduct flyby of Torifune asteroid
My favorite space probe is the European Space Agency Philae. It probes the comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko and actually landed on it. It was able to send back images of its surface. Amazing!
slicktux··on AI coding is addictive. Engineers are paying the price
Maybe a system running a local model is not so bad. The tokens per second will allow for that break?

Also, at what point does AI take over for all the thinking and white board planning?

AI should be a rubber duckie one can use to posit and assist when hit a brick wall. But if using it for all code generation, planning and troubleshooting then one is not in control; they’re just prompt drones…

slicktux··on Why does kinetic energy increase quadratically, not linearly, with speed? (2011)
Cool anecdote!

Couldn’t help but notice you misspelled car twice but only when talking about the blue car..

slicktux··on Canada plans 'nuclear renaissance' with up to 10 reactors built by 2040
That’s great news ! Have they also solved the nuclear waste problem?

Honest question; here in the USA we have not.

slicktux··on 15-minute at-home Lyme disease tick test
Interesting enough; Lyme disease come from ticks that fed on infected mice. Like deer-mice or white footed mice. Rodents are the problem.
slicktux··on Keygen.music
Unable to browse because I’m on mobile but Satellite One by Purple Motion is a track to listen to! <3
slicktux··on Meta steals a tactic from Tesla and builds data centers in tents
When I read the headline I imagined a huge tent with steel beam structure and professional grade covers with HVAC and concrete footprint.

Seems everyone else imagined a camping tent. Different backgrounds I guess.

slicktux··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
Mine is just running a model on my laptop. It’s just amazing! I can ask it pretty much any question and it replies relatively FAST! Before, we lacked advancements in technology because we were limited by hardware. This advancement is the opposite: our software and the math/algorithms have brought us this.
slicktux··on Meta's ships facial recognition on smart glasses
It’s possible to make it offline but one would still need a phone for the object recognition software…that software would have to be what stays offline. Definitely doable.
slicktux··on Queen bees emerge from special wax chambers
I’ve always wondered what or how queen bees were made. It’s almost as they were a different insect.
slicktux··on Trump signs downsized AI order after weeks of reversals
Seems to be. What better way to secure your companies future by limiting open frontier models. Government sponsored monopoly?
