slicktux··on Trump signs downsized AI order after weeks of reversals
Seems to be. What better way to secure your companies future by limiting open frontier models. Government sponsored monopoly?
slicktux··on Shift will clean homes for free to train future robots
I’m a little more hopeful that the future will allow for local (network free) frontier AI technology. Being that I’m a tech enthusiast and computer science nerd I tend to live less on the bleeding edge of technology because of privacy infringing hardware. Take for example meta glasses. So many people have adopted them because they don’t care about privacy as much as I do. So they get to live with the latest and greatest. Though, running a local LLM on my laptop (that is state of the art) has made me a little more hopeful that the future is around the corner. Who would have thought that one day we could run advanced AI on a laptop that’s able to do RAG and CAG.
slicktux··on Is "colorectal cancer" rising in "young people"?
I’m not sure if this comment is AI generated but I’d like to make a point either way.

Human biology is orders of magnitude more efficient than AI; that’s in regards to intelligence and processing the world around us.

It is not only more efficient but more complex but yet simple. Therefore, the complexity of our biology is a result of efficiency. An efficiency that allows us to process the world and achieve homeostasis in the most simple way. I’d like to see a machine achieve the same without having any type of vulnerability or weakness to corruption.

slicktux··on Memory has grown to nearly two-thirds of AI chip component costs
I bought 96GB of RAM a couple of years ago for ~$250. That same RAM now costs $1200!
slicktux··on Toxic chemical leak at a manufacturing facility in Orange County
Yes, as of recent the third possibility mentioned by officials is that it will Turn into plastic and not explode.
slicktux··on Qwen3.7-Max: The Agent Frontier
I just started messing with local LLMs and honestly I’m pretty impressed. I have a workstation laptop with an NVIDIA A1000 (6GB VRAM) and 96GB of RAM. I rarely used my gpu. Occasional CAD design or Machine Learning with OpenCV.

I ran llama3:latest and it ran pretty fast! I’m curious to see how Qwen would run on my system.

slicktux··on Windows 9x Subsystem for Linux
We’ve been blessed!
slicktux··on Local AI needs to be the norm
I’m just waiting for the US Government to implement their own local AI. Which will eventually lead to them open sourcing it because it’s tax payer funded and being that the NSA has decades worth of internet data they can train on; open weights would be just as good as any companies…
slicktux··on Plasticity and language in the anaesthetized human hippocampus
No offense taken; I do say it out loud during conversations ; at times. I find myself ‘saying’ it more in my head whilst having a stream of consciousness moment.

I find that I have two personalities and my writing/text personality is much more sagacious and better spoken (if that makes sense??)

slicktux··on Plasticity and language in the anaesthetized human hippocampus
I sometimes ge the most complex logical dreams whilst going to sleep on a programming problem. The dreams are normal dreams but structured like a programming problem or logic…it’s like my brain is trying to dream normally but it’s also Fixated on programming logic so it subliminally incorporates it into dreams. Then I wake up and I feel like I’ve compiled the whole code in my head and did not rest.
slicktux··on Easyduino: Open Source PCB Devboards for KiCad
This is a nice project that I will definitely be looking into for my projects!
slicktux··on New Orleans's Car-Crash Conspiracy
It’s a Republic of states that are Democratic. Some states have cities with terrible poverty but never the case where the whole state can be categorized as such.
slicktux··on Employers use your personal data to figure out the lowest salary you'll accept
Equifax’s The Work Number buys salary data from employers and they use it for income verification when applying for loans and rentals. You’d be surprised how much data is out there; and it was all sold by entities you ‘trust’. One example being the DMV
slicktux··on Music for Programming
soma.fm Channel: DEFCON Radio Best programming music!
slicktux··on $96 3D-printed rocket that recalculates its mid-air trajectory using a $5 sensor
With all do respect I think your over complicating the problem. It’s not rocket science (no pun intended). It’s essentially a hobby rocket that can be weaponized and it’s all DIY. That’s the point simple and off the shelf. Not meant to travel towards the stratosphere or even long range. Quick and dirty way to cause havoc in a localized area.
slicktux··on $96 3D-printed rocket that recalculates its mid-air trajectory using a $5 sensor
Regardless, he made a prototype rocket enclosure and he seems to have the software down… I think the propulsion system will be the easy part. Hardest part will be tuning the PID so that the rocket goes where he wants it to. Then incorporating his tracking system will be another challenge of itself but that’s because of the form factor. As long as his calculus and linear algebra is good I see than being successful. Either way I’d hire simply to be a prototype engineer. Either Anduril or CIA would hire him in a heartbeat for prototyping.
slicktux··on Wired headphone sales are exploding
CD audio quality is the best…specially with wired headphones

slicktux··on Online age-verification tools for child safety are surveilling adults
Your sardonic comment says a lot but does not address the real freedom we have. Which is to NOT use those platforms that require age verification. The more people that don’t use them the more it will hurt the companies that loose a customer base; then maybe their lobbyists will force a change.
slicktux··on System76 on Age Verification Laws
I wonder how this law affects Gentoo or LFS since one builds the OS..?
slicktux··on Data has weight but only on SSDs
Classic Cunningham’s Law… post the wrong answer and you’ll get the correct one. Then the comments can be used by LLM to output the correct answer!
slicktux··on Motorola announces a partnership with GrapheneOS
By Motorola partnering with Graphene it will allow them to get a bigger market share and also help create a niche market for open source… It’s a win win
slicktux··on Why isn't LA repaving streets?
I think another factor of road wear is better handling cars. People are able to drive more aggressively and accelerate more efficiently then ever before. Taking tight turns at high speeds or accelerating from dead stop does wear out roads more due to higher traction from driving behavior and characteristics…
slicktux··on Sub-$200 Lidar could reshuffle auto sensor economics
That might very well be the case…I’m sure the IR beams are encoded uniquely per LIDAR but it might still blind them… good food for thought!
slicktux··on $30B for laptops yielded a generation less cognitively capable than parents
I went to schools that had the latest tech for computer labs. Apple Macintosh computers…the colorful ones. Anyway, we had the latest but I did not learn what I wanted to; which was how a computer works. Instead class was just about browsing within the walled garden of the operating system and making videos and typing.

Just because one has the latest tech dos not mean they’ll learn. I learned more on my own with used computers then I did in school. I was able to break things and fix them.

slicktux··on WiFi could become an invisible mass surveillance system
Yes, that’s a noteworthy project that has some good use cases!
slicktux··on Why This Computer Scientist Says All Cryptocurrency Should "Die in a Fire" (2022)
They are bits that are cryptographically true and unique. It may not be tangible but now we are getting into philosophy of mathematics and whether math is real or not? I believe in math therefore I believe in cryptography.
slicktux··on Why This Computer Scientist Says All Cryptocurrency Should "Die in a Fire" (2022)
You can say the same thing about gold.
slicktux··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
There’s more computing power in a disposable vape than in the Apollo Guidance Computer???
slicktux··on Sugar industry influenced researchers and blamed fat for CVD (2016)
I feel like the same thing is happening now… processed foods have less sodium and I feel are more sugary. I don’t live a sedentary lifestyle…I need salt for hydration and muscle contraction. I find the new nutrition guidelines for sodium lacking.
slicktux··on What Is a Memristor?
I read through the article without any dark patterns and I went back after your comment and now I’m getting them. Apologies.
