slices··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
yep. my mom's subaru ate several batteries due to this problem. She traded it in.
slices··on The darker side of being a doctor
anecdote alert: had a family member treated by a foreign doctor last year, and received advice from that doc that was both 1) highly dangerous, 2) bare minimum 20 years out of date.

Inconceivable that a domestically-trained doc would have made the same mistake.

slices··on OpenJev
sounds like an argument in favor of structured output, is that right?
slices··on Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac: The future of supercars is combustion engines
It's obvious, now that we have fast, flashy, quiet cars, that part of the appeal of supercars has always been the sound of the engine.
slices··on Disruption with Some GitHub Services
"fun"

I thought I was cynical enough about goings on at Microsoft / Azure, but apparently not.

slices··on Claude Opus 5
really? I have yet to see fable or 5.6 reliably generate front end code with correct a11y, for one thing -- does that not matter to the work you do?
slices··on Bring back crappy forums
In my experience, finding a quality board has always been topic focused. I.e. if you have a Toyota Corolla and want to communicate about that, just look for Corolla forums, and it'll quickly become obvious if one is lively / your vibe.
slices··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
75k here but a few of the later ones were lucky guesses.
slices··on Show HN: Find the best local LLM for your hardware, ranked by benchmarks
AI response
slices··on Something is afoot in the land of Qwen
I've seen behavior like that when the model wasn't being served with sufficiently sized context window
slices··on How to talk to anyone and why you should
Regions in the US dominated by Nordic immigrants have similar patterns!
slices··on Anthropic tries to hide Claude's AI actions. Devs hate it
Have you played with the effort setting? I'm finding medium effort on 4.6 to give more satisfactory results for that kind of thing.
slices··on An Update on Heroku
I would love to see the prompt that led to that word salad
slices··on An Update on Heroku
Just about to set up a new app to deploy to Heroku, but this does not seem promising. Render seems like the next logical move, but curious where others are looking for alternatives.
slices··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
which was true
slices··on The Authoritarian Stack: How Tech Billionaires Are Building a Post-Democratic US
David Sacks might be interested to know his title is now "Zar".
slices··on Bye, Google Search
It never ceases to amaze me how google search _used_ to work great for stuff like this. You could just type "tbray {obscure term on a blog entry from 10 years ago}" and bam, instant result.

I guess google generates more ad revenue with users forlornly paging through search results, hoping against hope that what they're looking for is there somewhere...

slices··on How bad can a $2.97 ADC be?
I thought they were talking about League of Legends players, whoops
slices··on Meta torrented & seeded 81.7 TB dataset containing copyrighted data
I've never been a huge user of either, but my worst Uber ride was much better than my best taxi ride.
slices··on Scientific American's departing editor and the politicization of science
ideally, science would be the best available information on "is". When the science is i.e. funded by a tobacco company and regarding the safety of tobacco, we should be skeptical. How much of current science falls in a similar class?
slices··on Scientific American's departing editor and the politicization of science
how many public health officials acted with awareness of the prevention paradox during covid?
slices··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
if your cheap Chinese EV starts on fire and burns down your house, it might not have been such a good deal
slices··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
true. I wasted over a year waiting to get a base model Toyota Sienna, and eventually realized they might as well not exist.
slices··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
Since 90% of my car trips are under 30 minutes, yes that would be worthwhile.

The other 10% are beyond any practical battery range, so a BEV isn't an option.

slices··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson
living in a major US city in 2012, we had ancient DSL
slices··on Learning not to trust the All-In podcast
a guy with a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering, who then worked for years at MIT, isn't an intellectual?
slices··on Memos: stick private notes on your email
"private", but the Australian government can access freely.
slices··on Medieval Icelanders were likely hunting blue whales before industrial technology
Very similar experience, it was cool seeing & hearing a whale up close, but man that must be annoying for the whale.
slices··on Ask HN: Freelance website builders/maintainers, what's in your 2024 toolkit?
no, Heroku is fine, as long as you have a basic understanding. If your service becomes a runaway hit, your heroku bill may get big, I assume that's what OP is referring to.
