sli··on Tell HN: MailChimp blacklists your IP if you open the browser's dev tools
Wow, that code is entirely unreliable. It just detects your browser's viewport being outside of some threshold of a "normal" aspect ratio and then just blindly assumes that means the devtools are open. The only devtool it can actually detect is Firebug. Everything else is nothing but a blind guess based on the size of your viewport. I'd be astonished if anyone used this code for anything serious.
sli··on Tell HN: MailChimp blacklists your IP if you open the browser's dev tools
Looking at the code[0], it just defines an aspect ratio threshold (170px in either direction, on line 13) for your browser's viewport and triggers if it's outside of that on width or height. So when you open a second panel, your viewport goes back to being closer to 16:9/16:10 and the tool considers that within both thresholds.

The detection is hilariously primitive, entirely unreliable, and only knows about your devtools directly if you're using Firebug.

sli··on Acer is building a fancy electric bike with AI
> This lightweight 35 lb. (16 kg) e-bike features a number of gadgets and gizmos we have yet to spot in the industry, such as built-in AI designed to predictively control the transmission and make use of collision detection sensors for a safer ride.

So, not AI, then. Just more scammy marketing copy.

sli··on Who is still inside the metaverse?
This seems like a strange example because out of my fairly large VR game collection, I can't think of a single shooter where reloading is anything different from just physically doing a reload action like you would with a real gun. I can only think of two games where the ammo is stored differently than real life (Compound and Alyx), the rest have ammo pouches and belts.

I can think of one smaller game where reloading is different, and that's Space Pirate Trainer, where you bring your guns behind your back for a moment. But that's more of an arcade game than what most people mean when they talk about shooters.

Maybe give Subnautica a try. Or the old version of HL2 on VR.

sli··on Who is still inside the metaverse?
Nothing went wrong. Meta owns 90% of the VR space.
sli··on Google Groups has been left to die
Albino Balcksheep turned 24 this past January and is still going. Newgrounds will turn 28 this July. Feels like yesterday, still.
sli··on YouTube relaxes profanity and monetization rules following creator backlash
In the film Rum Diary, the goal of a group of characters is to request a permit to build 50 houses with the actual goal of building three hotels. The "negotiation" step is when they "concede" the houses and "just" build the hotel instead, the hotels being the original plan. The houses were basically just a trick to start the negotiations way in favor of one side.

That's the scheme being described above, it is not something that is specific to content creators, but instead a description of shady negotiation tactics used by powerful entities (like YouTube or billionaire real estate developers). There is nothing about it that is specific to YouTube or content creators.

sli··on React is holding me hostage
If you're going to call something a footgun, make sure it's an actual footgun and not simply using a different naming convention than the one you want. You want the HTML name while React uses the Javascript name.

You should give Clojurescript a serious look. You can use that approach, but the resulting code is... well, readable.

Usually that's because it's the closest job that will pay their current rent, but won't pay the rent of a place that's closer. Almost nobody "chooses" that.
sli··on Godot 4.0 Stable
I've been using Godot 4 exclusively since around Beta 8 and have had little to no trouble adapting. Godot 4 has had documentation for a while now, and finding the "new" version of whatever I needed was always pretty easy. That's only going to get better.

There is also of course the Godot 4 channel in the Godot Discord that is helpful.

sli··on Making It Legal to Play Outside: “Reasonable Childhood Independence” Bills
It's a related cultural factor. The more we build our outdoor spaces to accommodate cars over people, the more notable it becomes when there are people in them.

Not sure why the derision is necessary. That's been a constant topic of discussion ever since AirTags released because it's a real concern that has multiple examples and has informed the design of the exact feature that the posted article is about.

"Quiet quitting" was also a company thing that attempted to demonize workers for performing exactly their job descriptions. Hence it coming mostly out of nowhere before suddenly up and disappearing from business media rags when it didn't really work out.

A lot of Lisp development is (or can be) REPL-based, Clojure(script) especially, but that's almost a whole paradigm in and of itself.
sli··on Google Play Developer Antitrust Litigation
If I had to guess, in the general sense: when you run your mouth to the point of making legal threats, the person or firm you're threatening will start actual legal proceedings themselves because they think (or know) you're full of shit.

It's worth noting that that's not at all what Newegg claims happened.[0] So "accidentally" in this case is probably more accurately states as biting off more than one can chew.

sli··on Microsoft Azure Outage
Every Azure product I've had to use has been lousy in every possible way. Azure DevOps at my last employer was a nightmare and nobody in the company liked it, not even the managers who decided on it.

sli··on Amazon Closing AmazonSmile
Cancelling my Prime membership a few years ago made it immediately clear that all I was paying for was to not have my package sit in the warehouse for an extra 3-4 days before making it to my house in two days anyway. I also started getting shipments coming from warehouses on the other side of the country, something that never happened while I was paying for Prime. Immediately clear that the benefits for ordering were entirely artificial.

sli··on Generative AI and The Future of Work

sli··on Conservatives think ChatGPT has gone 'woke'
If "woke" is going to be bucketed into purely leftist ideology, which is already oversimplifying it as progressivism or simply being anti-racist isn't strictly leftist, then "clown world" is going to be bucketed as a neo-Nazi dogwhistle.

Its origin on the internet was tightly bound to the "Honkler" meme, which was a neo-Nazi dogwhistle so thinly veiled that it was only denied by people with "1488" in their usernames. There was essentially no real attempt to try and present it as something else.

Is spreading a neo-Nazi dogwhistle really a good push back against anti-racism?

sli··on Godot for AA/AAA game development – What's missing?
The new tile editor works much in the way you describe and people overall seem to hate it. I quite like it. I'll grant them that it's a bit weird and needs some cleanup (there's a tab that's in two places for two subtly different purposes, for example), but I still prefer it to the old version.

But the workflow of designing e.g. a tile hitbox and then applying it quickly to multiple tiles is exactly how it works now.

sli··on Reasons Python Sucks (2018)
I was actually interested to read a list of quirks, especially since I haven't used Python in quite a while now and the author claims it has more quirks than any other language they've ever seen. And yet, the only example is the relatively easy to understand quoting. What is this article actually for?
