sleepyfran··on Microsoft is killing Skype
It's not, you can do that under the video settings if you hover over the camera icon on the calling screen, or there's a device settings buried under the overflow menu as well. Haven't used Teams in a while, but I doubt it changed now.
sleepyfran··on Show HN: Markwhen: Markdown for Timelines
This looks amazing, will definitely try to incorporate it into my workflow!
sleepyfran··on Spotify will end service in Uruguay due to bill requiring fair pay for artists
Amazing reasoning. Let's hope not everyone in our industry will also think the same, otherwise we're pretty much doomed :)
sleepyfran··on Spotify will end service in Uruguay due to bill requiring fair pay for artists
"Spotify already pays nearly 70% of every dollar it generates from music to the record labels and publishers", yet musicians still get paid incredibly bad. Maybe if the only way of making your business model sustainable is by underpaying artists, your business is just not sustainable.
sleepyfran··on Firefox 118 brings browser-based website translation (no cloud servers required)
I doubt it's political, Czech was included in the extension but is not available now that it's integrated into the browser. I guess more languages will come later.
sleepyfran··on “Discord” would like to receive keystrokes from any application
As said in other comments this is just for the Push To Talk support. It’s not mandatory in any way and users can just deny the permission and go on using the app (as long as they don’t need PTT, of course). So this is just yet another uninformed tweet that brings absolutely no information or anything useful.
sleepyfran··on JSON Hero: Enhanced JSON structure visualization
But they do mention that you can disable it at anytime, only that for the telemetry that is sent with the installer you have to set the flag beforehand (obviously):

> The .NET SDK telemetry feature is enabled by default. To opt out of the telemetry feature, set the DOTNET_CLI_TELEMETRY_OPTOUT environment variable to 1 or true.

> A single telemetry entry is also sent by the .NET SDK installer when a successful installation happens. To opt out, set the DOTNET_CLI_TELEMETRY_OPTOUT environment variable before you install the .NET SDK.

sleepyfran··on KDE beats macOS
Alternative title: KDE is different than macOS, hands down
sleepyfran··on Ableton Note – A playable iOS app for forming musical ideas
I'd recommend to watch the Learn Note video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjjMEZburmQ

It was really cool to see all the things you can do with it.

sleepyfran··on Show HN: If Spotify and Tinder Had a Baby
This is cool! I was able to test in Safari and it really looks awesome, however it doesn't seem to work on Firefox. Any plans on supporting it? :)
sleepyfran··on Show HN: Art Diario – Curated art on your desktop every day
This looks really nice, reminds me of Muzei[1] on Android which also allowed to add effects on the image that was being displayed. Definitely keeping ArtDiario running! Just a little thing: consider making the icon for the menu bar smaller, it's way to big compared to the usual size of the icons on macOS and it makes it look off [2].

sleepyfran··on Show HN: Sqwok – A social chat alternative to Twitter and Reddit
To offer a counterpoint I think it’s totally fine :) “reticulating splines” is one of the loading text that The Sims uses, for example, and I can’t find a less “niche” product than that using it.

Maybe just making the “…” dance to indicate that it’s loading would remove any doubt that the page is doing something for those users that might not understand it. I personally love apps that have some charisma!

sleepyfran··on Please put units in names
This is one of the reasons why I love F#, baked in support for units of measures. So instead of having to rename the function to include the unit I can just declare it to take the type `int<second>` and the compiler will complain if you try to pass an `int` or an `int<minute>` unless you declare an explicit conversion between the units.
sleepyfran··on Firefox 92
I've been using it for around a year now and honestly I haven't noticed any big difference with Safari in my MBA M1. Would definitely recommend to give it another try!
sleepyfran··on Show HN: Gentle is a social app where you give and get kindness
Just tried it and my oh my, the design is amazing and it really makes the whole experience much better. I really love both the idea and the execution and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next. Amazing job! :)
