slededit··on Google May Have to Get Used to Third Place in the Cloud
They ship 32-bit versions still to support those people. As a former msft engineer it was a huge pain in the ass to have to build the 32-bit version all the time - but customers used and relied on it.
slededit··on The automation charade
IP is the new "means of production". Nobody wants to sell you a tractor outright anymore. They want you to buy the expensive to maintain hardware while they own the IP that makes it work. This ensures they can keep getting a recurring slice of the revenue you create with that machine - without the maintenance and other costs associated with a rental business.
slededit··on Microsoft resumes rollout of Windows 10 version 1809, promises quality changes
The IPC communication between WSL and native windows applications is getting better all the time. Along with the filesystem they both share you can use sockets, and named pipes.

Because of fork() you will never be able to arbitrarily use NT objects unconstrained in WSL apps, but there are lots of options. You can launch both windows and Linux programs arbitrarily from the shell now so the decision to choose one or the other is slowly coming down to preference.

slededit··on Why We Need Difficult Books
Do you not see the irony in calling something toxic? Your not saying its merely wrong - but that its on par with poison.
slededit··on Fatal Call of Duty Swatter Pleads Guilty to 51 Charges
Have you seen a felony police stop? Civilians caught up in them make a massive number of mistakes for the simple reason they aren't exactly used to someone pointing a gun at them and yelling. LivePD is rather illuminating because unlike COPS not all encounters end in an arrest so you see how innocents react with police encounters.

Its easy to say they should follow directions when you are safe and comfortable at home. Quite another when you don't know why angry police are pointing their guns at you and any false move could mean death.

slededit··on Fatal Call of Duty Swatter Pleads Guilty to 51 Charges
I'm sorry but I don't think if you did this in Canada, Great Britain, or Sweden you'd get the same results at all. If you want to control for gun ownership Switzerland has very high rates and police shootings of civilians are nowhere near proportional to what happens in America.
slededit··on Microsoft resumes rollout of Windows 10 version 1809, promises quality changes
The old Unix personality had that - and now the new Linux Personality (they no longer call it that) implements this for you. This complaint no longer makes sense since WSL was released.
slededit··on The last velvet merchant of Venice
The end of the article has me confused, they say modern machines can't match these old ones. But then say most of their ancient designs are now done on the mainland with modern machines.

Which is it?

slededit··on Fatal Call of Duty Swatter Pleads Guilty to 51 Charges
I don’t see how that has any relevance to the situation where this man was shot. Police were arrayed out in front of the house and he came out the front door with his hands up. Somehow he was going to disarm every cop on the lawn?

Back in reality the police shot a man who already surrendered and was unarmed. This would be a war crime on a battlefield, but the police are held to a lower standard.

slededit··on Fatal Call of Duty Swatter Pleads Guilty to 51 Charges
They had him with his hands up and shot him. They claim he was going for his waste band but there was no gun there.

Pulling up your pants is not a reason to get shot. Other jurisdictions don’t seem to have the same problem of shooting people who have already surrendered.

slededit··on Trip report: Fall ISO C++ standards meeting
C++11 was the big change these are more window dressing. If you like your current language that's fine but as a C++ programmer who had to learn C++11 it was well worth it.

The more recent additions are more along the lines of "I can't believe that wasn't already in the standard!" rather than new things to learn.

slededit··on Trip report: Fall ISO C++ standards meeting
32-bit ints have a more compact encoding in x86 because it was assumed they would be the most common. The "native" size isn't a simple matter these days. Back in the old dark days of 8 and 16-bits common values regularly exceeded the size. But 4 billion is large enough to still be the default.
slededit··on Waymo CEO Says Alphabet Unit Plans to Launch Driverless Car Service
The car may be ready 24/7, but humans have a nasty habit of all wanting to travel at the same times. In reality the vast majority of trips will happen at rush hour and most cars will sit idle the rest of the day.

It’s brand suicide to not have a car when needed so fleets will be sized for peak load. When you apply queuing theory none of the numbers seem to add up.

slededit··on The NIMBY Backlash Against Amazon’s HQ2
Because it’s an unfair playing field. Government is supposed to be a check on corporate power - not guaranteeing it with unfair advantages.

On the non business side our tax dollars are going to support billionaires. At the national level this is pretty close to zero sum. Every dollar Amazon doesn’t pay is a dollar someone else has to. Discrepancies between regions would be solved more efficiently with transfer/equalization payments.

slededit··on Amazon Selects New York City and Northern Virginia for New Headquarters
They are quite literally the WalMart of the web. Although that sort of damage has already been done.
slededit··on Boeing Withheld Information on 737 Model, According to Safety Experts and Others
Boeing specifically marketed this as not requiring new training. So they did everything they could to hide it in order to satisfy marketing’s desire.

The FAA signed off. I guess the lawyers will argue if it was legal or not.

slededit··on YouTube CEO calls EU’s proposed copyright regulation financially impossible
Like educational videos from the 50s, its neat to be able to go back and see them. But these subjects get continuously recovered. Sometimes just to spice it up, and sometimes the material does change. Its not the end of the world.
slededit··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 iOS app
That's fine, but if CloudFlare believes that then they shouldn't write long winded blog posts explaining how they believe the exact opposite immediately after de-platforming someone.

Its the two-faced nature of it I object to.

slededit··on Google, Facebook, and Amazon benefit from an outdated definition of “monopoly”
Strange you ignored the greatest monopoly of all time, Rockefeller's Standard Oil. Despite getting split up in 1911, its successor Exxon is the largest non-government owned oil company in the world.
slededit··on UFOs spotted off Irish coast under investigation
Human ethics vary amongst groups and cultures - even highly advanced ones. I don't see any evidence to suggest a convergence on a "one true" moral code. For a brief period western values seemed to take over due to the west's influence, but that is waning today rather than increasing in momentum.
slededit··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 iOS app
Actions speak much louder than words. They did it knowing it violated their principles yet they want to eat their cake and have it too. We wouldn't give another corporation the same benefit of the doubt, but because they are in tech we're willing to use a double standard.
slededit··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 iOS app
Its just weird they are willing to censor legal speech but not illegal things like malware.
slededit··on Tech stocks are getting slammed, Dow tanks more than 500 points
When the risk free rate was zero, and bonds not much better - there where precious few places to park your money. Now people have options again and it clear the resulting risk-capital allocation is not going to be 100% stocks.
slededit··on ASUS Z390 Motherboards Automatically Push Software into Your Windows Install
If you don’t trust ASUS then don’t buy their motherboard. Their code is already loading microcode onto your CPU and booting with UEFI.

Given you have to trust them anyways why not just put the drivers right on the motherboard FLASH.

slededit··on California Based P2P Trader Convicted of Illegal Money Transmission
It’s not a defense but traditionally this was balanced by laws requiring a mens rea component - or a guilty mind.

With the rise of strict liability crimes for everything this balance is no longer in place. The Overton window has moved dramatically from where it was when that phrase was coined.

slededit··on H-1B visa fraud: Sunnyvale man indicted for bringing in 600 workers illegally
Fraud wasn’t a mere label in this case. The positions he described to USCIS simply did not exist. If that’s not fraud then the word is meaningless.
slededit··on Linkers and Loaders (1999)
C and C++ programmers could benefit from this. So many times I had to explain an error message or problems that would be obvious if they knew how it worked.
slededit··on Why ‘Free Trading’ on Robinhood Isn’t Really Free
I discovered this early on. I was using an ultra discount broker at $1 a trade and my friend was with Fidelity. We both placed our orders at the exact same time and he got a price that blew away the difference in commission (hundreds of $ better). After that I moved everything to Fidelity.
slededit··on Britain funds research into drones that decide who they kill, says report
It would be imprudent not to develop this. If your adversary deploys this technology they would have a dramatic advantage against you. Like nukes its technology that should not be used, but you also don't want to be the one without it.
slededit··on Apple Admits to Hardware Quality Problems with iPhone X, MacBook Pro
Longer than that. The random battery shutdowns started with the iPhone 7.
