slededit··on Paul Buchheit on Joining Google, How to Become a Great Engineer, and Happiness
BillG claims Paul did most of the emulator work and he worked on the interpreter core. With the floating point routines by Monte Davidoff who they hired. It was a team effort of course, but BillG was adamant to take credit for the interpreter specifically.

From the source code itself:

PAUL ALLEN WROTE THE NON-RUNTIME STUFF.
BILL GATES WROTE THE RUNTIME STUFF.
MONTE DAVIDOFF WROTE THE MATH PACKAGE.

slededit··on China's GPS 'rival' Beidou
Well I'll disagree with my own unsubstantiated claim. Consider that its easier to manufacture flak shells than make airplanes. The same applies to space.
slededit··on China's GPS 'rival' Beidou
You can destroy something without taking it out of orbit. The pieces will happily carry on along their orbital trajectories.
slededit··on The City of Seattle Accidentally Gave Me 32M Emails for $40
Could you be a little more precise? As is this is just a vacuous statement about how you know more than the author.
slededit··on Cleveland.com’s ‘right to be forgotten’ removes names from some crime stories
It’s far to easy to rewrite history in git.
slededit··on Will Tech Leave Detroit in the Dust?
They aren’t good at talking about it. Nobody has any idea what the hell Jim Hackett is doing at Ford for example. GM is much better but they haven’t been able to position themselves as leaders yet.
slededit··on When's a van a van and when's it a car?
Ford spent untold amounts of money bringing the challenge to the Supreme Court. I think it’s fair to say most people can’t afford to argue their loop hole so forcefully.

On average saying you won’t win and the best advice is to not bother. Although I have seen cases of an average Joe winning. In all cases it took a ton of their time.

slededit··on OOP Is Dead, Long Live OOP
In modern C++ the real reason is RAII automatic cleanup. Of course you really only need a dtor for that.
slededit··on Paul Buchheit on Joining Google, How to Become a Great Engineer, and Happiness
He wrote his interpreter on a larger machine (PDP-11 I think), and tested it on an emulator they wrote. When they got to MITS to show off their code that was the first time it ever ran on real hardware.

They did not develop BASIC by flipping switches.

slededit··on What the 1949 film Twelve O’Clock High still tells us about air combat
Ah the style of the time was heavy dramatics. A holdover from the stage where you needed exaggerated expression to make up for the distance of the audience.

Still I didn’t find it nearly as bad as other examples from that era. “A Street Car Named Desire” for example takes it to another level.

slededit··on Cleveland.com’s ‘right to be forgotten’ removes names from some crime stories
It’s the Canadian equivalent of a felony. The US will bar you for any crimes which are a felony there as well.

The surprise is that a first time offense is usually a misdemeanor in the US. In Canada the “misdemeanor” limit is .05%.

I think there needs to be some balance to the ease of research. Like if you want the original unmodified version you have to actually go to the newspaper archives.

In the past you could always do this research. But it was expensive so you wouldn’t just to check up on your new neighbor.

slededit··on What the 1949 film Twelve O’Clock High still tells us about air combat
Naturally they wouldn't want it seem like it was OK for commanders to "lose it".
slededit··on The Student Loan Debt Crisis Is About to Get Worse
People like to trade up houses or refinance these days. It’s not at all unusual to reach retirement with a mortgage still in play.
slededit··on Anti-Tax Fervor Closed Their Libraries. Now Residents Are Trying to Go It Alone
As the song goes “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”.

The town tested out life without libraries and saw it was bad for kids. This got the votes to reopen them. I think sometimes it’s healthy to see if we “really need it”. Especially when physical books are becoming obsolete.

slededit··on What I loved about Paul Allen
Bill was waking up from a hangover due to the previous night. He awakes to Paul waving the magazine saying, Bill! Bill!
slededit··on What I loved about Paul Allen
They did have a falling out but it seems they reconciled. Paul Allen claims BillG tried to cut him out of Microsoft when he was first diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease.
slededit··on Ontario to exempt Sikhs from wearing helmets while riding motorcycles
Police can’t systematically give tickets for things that aren’t illegal. Mistakes happen and the courts sort it out - but if that was the policy there would be huge problems.
slededit··on Ontario to exempt Sikhs from wearing helmets while riding motorcycles
Ontario funds a Catholic school board with public money. Separation of church and state is not at all universal.
slededit··on Americans Renouncing Citizenship Hits New Record; Tax Bill Won't Change That
Is holding a mutual fund in your home country dodgy?

It subjects you to the punitively complex PFIC rules. These are largely a protectionist measure for the US financial system but you get caught up in them regardless.

To do your US taxes correctly as an ex-pat is really complex. If you just file a 1040 you’ve missed a number of forms to document your foreign holdings.

slededit··on The Roman 'Brexit': how life in Britain changed after 409 AD
Connecting this to Brexit is really distasteful and misleading.

The Roman Empire no longer had the will or material to support Britain and left them to their own devices against they’re will. They had no political or military systems in place to replace the Roman support.

None of this has any correlation with today.

slededit··on US Lawmakers Urge Canada to Snub China's Huawei in Telecoms
Trump specifically says he’s in it just for America. The old order of the friendly superpower is dead. NAFTA renegotians were evidence of that.

In his own words, "At least Canada knows where I stand,". The message has been received loud and clear up North.

So I’d say they’re probably equal. At least China hasn’t tried overtly to collapse our auto sector.

slededit··on I Have a Laptop with 4GB RAM – An Electron Rant
Fifty. Not 500.

You misread my original comment, and the follow up.

I thought you were being smart with 50 megabits in your earlier comment or I would have caught that misunderstanding earlier.

slededit··on I Have a Laptop with 4GB RAM – An Electron Rant
This was on Windows, and dynamic linking as the project was proprietary. If you pay the fee or are open source you can static link and it will be much smaller.
slededit··on Apple calls popcorned CPU “liquid damage” [video]
Apple doesn't really use through hole parts - the connectors are SMT. I can't see any high volume repair shop using a soldering iron on SMT parts when hot air is so much easier and faster. A hobbyist might, but only because they don't have the hot air rework tools.
slededit··on Apple calls popcorned CPU “liquid damage” [video]
How you will solder a thousand ball BGA part as in the video with a soldering iron?

Almost all surface mount is designed for hot air. You can touch up an MLCC with an iron but you are very likely to crack it with uneven heat.

slededit··on Apple calls popcorned CPU “liquid damage” [video]
> you can't get popcorn from mechanical repair or a few touch ups with a soldering iron.

Yes you can, I've done it. Moisture sensitivity is about heat (and the resulting steam expansion). It doesn't matter whether its from the factory's re-flow oven or your hot air rework station.

slededit··on I Have a Laptop with 4GB RAM – An Electron Rant
Its been about two years, but ~50MB was the range. Its quite possible the necessary optimization wasn't done (I wasn't responsible for that). But internal builds with static linking gave you that for free.
slededit··on Air India Express 737 Hits ILS, Damages Wall on Departure, Flies for 4 Hours
If your car seat is electric is probably based on a worm gear which is more or less self locking.
slededit··on I Have a Laptop with 4GB RAM – An Electron Rant
You can, but then you have 50MB of useless DLLs that static linking would eliminate. At that point you have the same disk footprint as an electron app. Memory use would still be order of a magnitude better though.
