slaughtr··on Temporal raises $550M at a $12.55B valuation
AI workflows are a convenient fit for temporal, their platform is great for much more than just those. It’s an elegant and easy to use solution for a lot of workflow needs.
slaughtr··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
This question is the exact point they’re making about the biased response to/willingness to create bike vs car laws.
slaughtr··on Being poor vs. being broke
I mean maybe by being a poor person in college on federal student loans I ended up naturally around other poor people in college on federal student loans and it’s confirmation bias, but what you’re saying is a little too generalized for my lived experience. Lots and lots of people growing up in poverty take that FAFSA and run - it’s what everyone says is the only way out of poverty.

I’ll give you this, though: most of the poor college students I knew (myself included) never made it to the $250k line because we eventually had to drop out because things like having to work to afford food made it harder to do well enough to stay in school and graduate.

slaughtr··on Being poor vs. being broke
You do not at all need to be well off to take $250k in student debt. In fact, the worse off you are the easier it is to do so. It’s how the US federal student loan aide works, essentially. The less you have the more they’ll loan.
slaughtr··on Programming in the Sun: A Year with the Daylight Computer
Why not toggle light and dark mode and set things to follow the system? That works great for me in macOS, these days things that doesn’t support that are rare. I actually can’t recall the last app (that _i_ use) that wasn’t a website that doesn’t support light vs dark mode and follow system settings.
slaughtr··on The Storm Hits the Art Market
I have no idea how it works, but if you sold/licensed/created your art to fabric patterns, theres almost certainly a small market there. Clicking through your site (others are right, you could present your work better), I see plenty of “I’d buy a decently priced cool shirt of that pattern”. Sample size of one and all.
slaughtr··on Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo completes first ever sub-57 minute half marathon
If you have proper rowing form your arms are almost entirely used just for holding on. The majority of your power comes from legs and core.

Not a professional rower, just looked into form when I was using a rowing machine.

slaughtr··on What's the best project management tool you have ever used?
My best time working with project management on a team used this method. Well, we used the back of a whiteboard but the post-its were the real killer feature.
slaughtr··on Kagi Assistant
You could just pin those domains as you come across them. I’ve definitely done that with one or two things that I hit this issue with.

Funny you mention Datadog, I specifically struggle to keep their blog/promotion/etc official results out of the way when digging around for documentation and troubleshooting. If I’m trying to find a solution to something weird with Datadog I’m often facing the opposite of your problem and wish Datadog’s site would get out of the way.

slaughtr··on QWERTY-Flip: The better keyboard layout your fingers already know
Do you have any source or further reading on this topic? The only thing I can readily find is you making similar comments on HN for the last decade, and I’d like to learn more.
slaughtr··on AWS Secrets Manager Agent
This seems like quite a lot of setup and hassle for what could be handled some other way with less fuss, like chamber[0] or Doppler[1]. Heck, even the classic .env seems like a better choice in every way.

What are the advantages to a configuration like this? Seems the HTTP interface with non-encrypted cache and separate agent situation isn’t something secure enough to satisfy most companies these days.

slaughtr··on Feds hit coding boot camp with big fine for allegedly conning students
I’m biased about this as a boot camp grad -> staff engineer who has worked with a lot of interns that went on to be very successful engineers from the boot camp I attended, but yes it can definitely help.
slaughtr··on How much faster are the Gnome 46 terminals?
Presuming my understanding of persistent sessions lines up with yours, set `terminal.integrated.enablePersistentSettings`. You may also want to change the value of `terminal.integrated.persistentSessionScrollback` to something higher than the default (1000? not sure)
slaughtr··on Semantic Code Reviews – Simple and direct comments without drama
I’ve had great luck with conventional commits by just ignoring half of them. feat, fix, chore, docs - that’s enough to cover a LOT of cases.
slaughtr··on Most promoted and blocked domains among Kagi Search users
I was worried about the 1000 search limit, and it has so far (since beta) proven not to be a problem. I use Kagi for all my searches on all machines and my phone and average 800 or so a month. I haven’t modified my behavior at all, and consider myself a heavy search engine user.

I have a theory that I would actually need to do twice as many searches with Google or DuckDuckGo or whatever, since the SEO spam would force me to do more term refinement. With far less of that (and a tiny tiny bit of settings tuning) I get better results much quicker. I’d test it but I have a job to do and can’t swallow the idea of going back to how bad the other viable options really are.

slaughtr··on Johnny Decimal
> One question is what if 10/11 gets more than ten items, so there is an 10/11/11, 10/11/12?

I’m not following this (and thus, I think, your entire point). I think you might be slightly misunderstanding something, the files inside a category(11-core in the example) would never have a prefix other than the category - 10/11/11 is the only option - 10/11/12 would be breaking the system.

Once you’re inside a category, there is no division into 10 anymore. The 11 category would allow documents from 11.01 to 11.99. And as I believe is mentioned in the spec, if you need more than .99 you likely have too broad of a category or area.

For what it’s worth, I’ve used this system at work and in my own notes for around 2 years and haven’t run into this problem (yet).

slaughtr··on I’m a productive programmer with a memory of a fruit fly

slaughtr··on GitHub Actions: Ephemeral self-hosted runners and new webhooks for auto-scaling
You don't need to create an Azure account to use Github Actions. It's not really refusing to use the service as much as using the streamlined one right in front of you.
slaughtr··on Expanded Protections for Children
If they can ever access it, then it's always "promise not to".
slaughtr··on Airyx OS
Sure it does, they link to the developer preview: https://github.com/mszoek/airyx/releases
slaughtr··on Capitol Hill's mystery soda machine
I never got anything particularly weird out of that machine. Drunkenly dropped $20 in it a few times. Mostly it was the odd flavors of things you only see in specialty stores, but I never saw anything "rare" other than an out of season Mtn Dew.
slaughtr··on Lina Khan: The 32-year-old taking on Big Tech
I'd say in this case it's an indication of her likely familiarity/experience with some of the issues she'll work on in the FTC - particularly "Big Tech" as the article calls out.

Less likely to ask Google how an ad showed up on their kid's iPhone, for example.

slaughtr··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
It reads to me - based on the founders' blogs - that the issue would then become one related to the business and thus be open for discussion. Maybe not exactly what they were thinking (Apple. Apple. Apple.) but still in the spirit of it.

However, the rest of the company openly discussing another employee's bathroom dealings probably crosses lines outside of politics. I would be highly uncomfortable if that came up at my employer about some new hire.

slaughtr··on Runnaroo search engine has been taken down indefinitely
What would it take to keep Runnaroo online? I've combed through enough apache logs to have a rough idea of what kind of bot traffic you might be dealing with, but not entirely sure of how best to mitigate other than naive IP blocking and scaling out to meet traffic demands...
slaughtr··on Runnaroo search engine has been taken down indefinitely
After using Runnaroo as my default search engine for the last ~9 months, I gotta say this is a huge bummer. The results were great 99.9% of the time and everything worked wonderfully or gave me a way to quickly get to a better service (such as image search -> Google image search). Quite a shock getting a "Not sure if it will be back" message when trying to do a quick search.

RIP

slaughtr··on Show HN: This website moves your mouse cursor
Dang I got suspended for 2 weeks and wasn't allowed to touch a computer for the remainder of the year when I did this.

And I had even managed to figure out how to target it at specific logged-in users!
