skyebook··on PostGIS 2.1.0 Released
Another added benefit is being able to keep up with the bleeding edge PostGIS and keep some scope of what's changing. If PostGIS was internal to Postgres I'd be a lot less comfortable swapping the configuration so often.
skyebook··on Things You Didn’t Know About Synchronization in Java and Scala
If this is interesting to you then I'd highly recommend Java Concurrency in Practice [1]. It goes through the then-new java.util.concurrent package, but more importantly, does a really good job of making all of the theoretical concepts straightforward to grasp

skyebook··on Git blame has never been so much fun
And if Hipchat took screenshots when coworkers saw your commits we could replace performance reviews.
skyebook··on Twitter Bootstrap Now Powering 1% of The Web
Just don't mention that you're choosing them based on their lesser intelligence.
skyebook··on Apple’s Developer Center Is Back After Over a Week Offline
Provisioning is back up, I'm able to see the site, log in, and look at all of the devices, certs, etc
skyebook··on Porting dl.google.com from C++ to Go
I don't know if its that old, but there was definitely a talk on this presented some time back. From what I remember, there was a lot of HN discussion around "well that's great but its just a download server" and some other people saying "yeah but its a complicated download server".
skyebook··on Apple Dev Center outage
Interesting, it looks like the WebObjects application(s) has actually been undeployed.

I poked around the main developer.apple.com for a bit until I got here: https://developer.apple.com/programs/start/safari/enroll.php...

Clicking the "Individual" button on the bottom throws up a WebObjects error: http://i.imgur.com/xcfZ5ip.png (Yes, that's probably the smallest I've ever made my Safari window. You're welcome, mobile readers)

skyebook··on Fast integer compression in Java
Thanks for the explanation, definitely an interesting routine and the performance numbers he touts in the blog post make it something I'd definitely look to test on my own
skyebook··on The new php.net
Does anyone else think that the best way to promote PHP would be to have a home page that doesn't take 240ms of processing before it starts to download?
skyebook··on Abandoned island in the middle of NYC
Another NYC gem is the abandoned Cobble Hill Tunnel on the border of Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights. It is also the oldest cut and cover construction in North America for the subterranean fans out there. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobble_Hill_Tunnel
skyebook··on MySQL man pages license change is a bug
Unfortunately, Oracle shut down the Wonderland project as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Wonderland
skyebook··on Javapocalypse
> It's too high-level to be useful for systems or game programming

I plead with you to check out http://jmonkeyengine.org and see for yourself

skyebook··on Google Java Annotations Gallery
Unfortunately, this seems to hold for any number of languages. To make matters worse, the code is rarely documented as a grab from SO
skyebook··on Modern GPU
Right, CUDA is Nvidia only (8-series and above, so basically anything after 2006). The stuff in the article can totally be replicated in OpenCL. Especially since OpenCL 1.1 where buffers can be shared between GL and CL contexts, which IIRC was the only real technical capability CUDA had that OpenCL did not.
skyebook··on Inside AT&T’s 83 GB/hour mobile cell tower
I thought 83 GB/hr seemed like not much capacity, and indeed that really isn't much. I've seen these units (and from other carriers as well, IIRC) before and figured they were bringing massive amounts of extra backhaul to spots with big events.

I'm curious how these figures relate with what 'normal' towers have allocated. I've seen the rough 1 gbps figure before but don't know how accurate that is.

skyebook··on Airline industry divided over passenger electronics
Or one that was half-asleep. I can't remember the last time I saw anyone spell iPhone with an upper-case I
skyebook··on Show HN: Spark Inspector, a run-time debugging tool for iOS apps
Wow, in about 4 minutes I was able to track down a UI positioning bug with the UINavigationBar that has been nagging us for two months.

Buying 5 copies now.

skyebook··on The Design Bankruptcy Of iPad Mini Clones
+1 and I would've bought one immediately if it didn't have the same internals as my iPad 2. Put the 4th gen parts inside with a retina display and I'd be all over that.
skyebook··on A Year of MongoDB
I would argue that its actually a multi-tiered question where the choice isn't really "NoSQL or RDBMS" but "NoSQL or ORM talking to RDBMS or going straight to RDBMS"

Here, the naive developer uses MongoDB as an all-in-one that rolls in the part of ORM that too often gets sole consideration, 'How do I persist my objects?', and effectively ignoring everything else. Try as I might to eloquently phrase my frustration with this all, it usually ends up in a rant against those relying on automagic who don't feel the need to understand every decision being made for you.

skyebook··on HTML5 App on a Floppy Disk
When you provision your device for development it comes up.
skyebook··on HTML5 App on a Floppy Disk
And it even shows up under the Developer pane in Settings on your iPhone! It's incredibly helpful.
skyebook··on Let's Make GitHub Better, Together
Their desktop clients aren't open source. I personally haven't found any open-source git GUIs that work as well as GitHub for Mac or SourceTree (both of which are closed-source and now have Windows equivalents)
skyebook··on Why the use of GPL is declining
I can't tell if my sarcastometer is out of calibration but... GitHub?

skyebook··on Obama Campaign AWS Infrastructure In One Diagram
My guess is that they wouldn't have used Redshift as it only became available for beta a few weeks before the election.
skyebook··on Resistor hack turns a Nvidia GTX690 into a Quadro K5000 or Tesla K10
There were unlocked lanes as well as the ability to use Quadro firmware with 8800GTS cards (which offered improved IQ in apps like Autodesk 3ds). As you allude to though, I'm pretty sure that the professional workstation cards are of a better binning.
skyebook··on SourceTree for Windows beta
Looks like there are a few people in the same boat as myself.

Was a cli purist but caved on a complicated merge. Actually seeing the commit graph was incredibly helpful. Later on I discovered that Command-Clicking two commits anywhere in the tree showed their full diff. I haven't gone back to the terminal except for the straightforward commit/fetch/branch creation commands.

Glad to see that Windows users will be getting some level of access to this gem :)

skyebook··on Twitter Bootstrap
Thank you for pointing this out. I might say "hey it's a standard bootstrap site, must not be much of a designer" but at least I'll be able to read the content.
skyebook··on Petition: Stop bundling crapware with Java
Agreed, I'm a big fan of Java and have written client software with it but the annoyances are rapidly beginning to outweigh the benefits. Bad press, awful UI support on OS X, Web Start's seeming disappearing/reappearing act... What's the point anymore?
skyebook··on Is there some kind of tech crash happening right now?
It would seem the guru market is crashing pretty hard after solid growth. Might be smart to do some job retraining to become a ninja
