skyde··on G9.js: Automatically Interactive Graphics
I am guessing it's similar to "Inverse kinematics".

There are many methods of modelling and solving inverse kinematics problems. The most flexible of these methods typically rely on iterative optimization to seek out an approximate solution, due to the difficulty of inverting the forward kinematics equation and the possibility of an empty solution space. The core idea behind several of these methods is to model the forward kinematics equation using a Taylor series expansion, which can be simpler to invert and solve than the original system.

this is crazy. I wish they explained better how they solve the constraint to find the new point position.

Regardless this would be an awesome tool for Math Visualization. The book "THE ELEMENTS OF EUCLID" [1] had a website with java applet but this is now dead since browser have dropped.

skyde··on Gyroflow: An open source advanced gyro-based video stabilization tool
This software is pure gold. I would actually love to give a donation to support its developement if possible.
skyde··on Kafka vs. Redpanda performance – do the claims add up?
A topic partition can lose some messages without compromising the correctness of the data replication protocol itself.

But I don't think anyone would call a configuration where you ca lose message a safe configuration.

skyde··on Kafka vs. Redpanda performance – do the claims add up?
Exactly I will never ever try MongoDB because of that. A database that do not fsync should not be called a database.
skyde··on Kafka vs. Redpanda performance – do the claims add up?
Author say "Redpanda incorrectly claim Kafka is unsafe because it doesn’t fsync - it is not true".

If you don't Fsync the batch, it's possible the server would send response to client saying data was written successfully while the batch is still just in memory and then the server loose power and never write it to disk.

Maybe the author have a different definition of unsafe but to me if it's not ACID it's unsafe!

skyde··on Ask HN: Tools to learn music theory?
thanks I tried the first one "Functional intervals / scale degrees:" and cant even get 50% correct with a choice of 2 notes.

What is wrong with me :)

skyde··on Taichi lang: High-performance parallel programming in Python
If I need to use Python why should I use this instead of Jax
skyde··on You cannot have exactly-once delivery (2015)
if you don't explicitly re-transmit the UDP packet. It would be at-most-once delivery right? The IP routers in the path will not re-send the UDP packet on their own!
skyde··on Ask HN: What is the weirdest or most surreal recent technology you have seen?
I cant believe it simply use self-attention to generate one word at a time. It got to be more complex than that.
skyde··on Ask HN: What is the weirdest or most surreal recent technology you have seen?
For people familiar with how ChatGpT work, is there a youtube video or blog you recommend that explain how it work.

I have a very good understanding of how deeplearning neural network work and language model like "Word2vec" that convert a sentence or a word to a vector space.

But I completely fail to understand how Given an initial text as prompt, ChatGpt will produce text that continues the prompt.

skyde··on Rust Safety Is Not Superior to C++, Bjarne Stroustrup Says – Slashdot
Smart pointer alone do not prevent race-condition. So racing thread accessing the same memory without lock would still corrupt the heap!
skyde··on Ask HN: Math books that made you significantly better at math?
we tried "Saxon math", Singapore math dimensions, and Beast Academy.

And my impression was that Saxon Math was the worst. What I mean by worst is that it just make you practice an algorithm by doing lot of repetition but doesn't force you to have a deep understanding or problem solving skill.

skyde··on A New Formula for the Determinant
Thanks a lot for sharing the code. It does indeed make it order of magnitude easier for me to understand and validate my own theory and assumptions about it.

For context when I was like 6 years old I was writing code in BASIC on a “TRS-80 Model III” to do linear algebra for fun (trying to make an arcade game).

But never learned algebra until I was forced to at ~20 years old in university.

So my understanding of mathematics was always mechanical (algorithm) and never very abstract. And it always was extremely hard to read research paper because the Greek letter don’t even mean the same thing in a (Statistic/ machine learning) paper and in a (physics/ calculus paper). And the author never properly define all the function and variables and assume you are already an expert.

skyde··on SQLite-based databases on the Postgres protocol? Yes we can
I actually would love the opposite. A very fast embedded version of postgresql!

Because postgreSQL handle multiple concurrent writer better.

skyde··on Ask HN: Are there things that Flash did that we still can’t do with today’s web?
sadly a lot.

Show me a tool where a 10 years old can draw and animate stick figure cartoons and publish is in a lightweight vector format (not video)!

skyde··on How much does Rust's bounds checking cost?
if it’s a 4% gain. then it’s the same 4% game no matter if running on a big fast cpu or a 8bit micro controller. right?
skyde··on Twitter core services latency reduced by ~400ms. Should feel noticeably faster
exactly, how can you call yourself an engineer/scientist if you quote latency without percentile.

That's without talking about coordinated omission.

skyde··on Ask HN: Anyone go through Montessori education until age 12 (end of grade 6)?
that should have been a research project on how to do school properly :-) I bet some phd in education could easily have published a research paper on this.
skyde··on Silicon Valley layoffs aren’t a cost-cutting measure. They’re a culture reset
I worked in Investment banking, at Microsoft and Amazon. I can tell you majority of team at Amazon and facebook have 0 work life balance.

When you work in Investment banking you are not expected to get 3 call at 3am every night including weekend and have to wake up get a coffee and work for 3+ hours to fix the problem the intern or idiot from another team (not your team) caused.

in Investment banking you can take a 2 week vacation without the whole company catching fire.

I was confusing JPEG XL with JPEG XR. If google want to kill JPEG XL, this is fine. Since no one is using it I beleive.
