skrap··on Humans Can Survive Underwater
The author is a long time climate change denier. He's apparently just moved onto a different phase of the denial strategy now that AGW is largely undeniable.

skrap··on Pop_OS 19.10
It's much improved by 19.10 on my machine, which IIRC went from libinput 1.12 to 1.14. The thumb detection (which was wrong just often enough to be torture) in Pop 19.04 is pretty solid in 19.10.

But then again I don't use anything fancy beyond one- or two-finger gestures. If you want all the fancy gestures, I can't really say much about that.

skrap··on Pop_OS 19.10
I moved from Mac to Pop (on a Dell XPS 9750 w/ 4k screen) about 3 months ago. Honestly the OS has been pretty much fine. When I installed it was on Pop 19.04, and I had to manually update to kernel 5.3 in order to get some hardware support, but now that kernel is included in Pop 19.10.

I find the contacts/calendars/mail programs to be overall less functional than Mac OS. Not terrible, but it is taking some time to learn the sharp edges to avoid. Geary is their default mail client, but it doesn't support a unified inbox, and I have a lot of email accounts, so I bounced between a bunch of other clients before finally settling on Evolution. Evolution feels like a bad Windows business suite from the late 90s, but the fact is that it has the functionality I need, and I think I can learn to avoid its oddities.

Besides that, everything about it is very familiar to a mac convert. You can see clear areas where strong inspiration was taken from the Mac. It's honestly breathtakingly good, and it's free. I haven't looked back.

Overall, I'd say you should pick up a System 76 Laptop and give it a go. If the Darter Pro had been around when I was switching, I'd certainly have bought that.

Sense | Data Engineer | Cambridge, MA | https://sense.com | Onsite or Remote

https://sense.workable.com/j/7D7B6612AC

Sense is building consumer hardware and mobile/web applications to help people understand their home energy consumption, see what's going on in their homes, and ultimately reduce their energy footprint. We're serious about having a real impact on climate change.

Our product is built on cutting-edge machine learning technology that analyzes detailed electrical data in real time to figure out what devices are on and how much power they're using. The data science team at Sense is responsible for developing these algorithms, and we're looking for a data engineer to join us. Our growing fleet of energy monitors is continuously streaming high volume energy data to the cloud data pipeline that powers our production and research systems. You will be responsible for the design, development, and operation of this critical infrastructure.

We're looking for someone who is:

* Excited about high-volume, realtime data and solving the challenges it poses.

* Passionate about building high-availability, performant, cost-effective, and scalable systems.

* Tenacious when tracking down production issues, digging into metrics and logs as needed to run a problem to the ground.

Sense is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and protected veterans are encouraged to apply. Ensuring a diverse and inclusive workplace where we learn from each other is core to Sense’s values. We welcome people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities and perspectives and are a pleasant and supportive place to work.

skrap··on A critical step to reduce climate change
Hello Bill Gates (who will never read this). You are a solutions guy, and a technology guy. Unsurprisingly, your blog lists lots of good technologies and solutions.

But climate change has shifted from a technological problem to a policy problem. We can solve climate change with a cocktail of existing tech, but we need public policy to make it happen. The biggest thing you (Mr Gates) can do is get directly involved in policy-making. US politics only empowers the ultra-rich, and you are sitting on the sidelines.

Get your face on TV, in front of Congress, and in the Oval Office. The rest of us can't, so you have to.

[edit for clarity]

skrap··on Nuclear power is the fastest way to slash greenhouse gas emissions, decarbonize
Strong public policy can save the world. Nuclear can help. But, without public policy, nothing will happen. So call it cap-and-trade, or green new deal, or cap-and-dividend, but we need it now.
skrap··on Bribes to Get into Yale and Stanford? What Else Is New?
Did you read the article? The fixer just paid the folks administering the test to let someone else take it, or to let them fix the answers after the fact. Also, agree with the person who mentioned Goodhart's Law.
skrap··on What can a technologist do about climate change? (2015)
My opinion: There is no solution to this problem without strong public policy. What we have here is a problem of the market to deal with a strong negative externality. There are many ways to deal with this, but they all involve some sort of collective legally binding action. Carbon tax, cap & dividend, outright outlawing of certain industries or activities... these are all possible solutions, each with their own strengths. But individual action is not gonna cut it on this one. So, invent all the technological solutions you want. They will be useful, but only to solve the challenge which the public policy will create. Without the public policy, they're scarcely going to scratch the surface.
skrap··on Pwn the LIFX Mini white
> Your tech-savvy neighbour is the threat 99.99% of people should worry about, not a nation-state funded intelligence agency.

You have a really pessimistic view of neighbors, I must say. If my neighbor walked up to me and asked for my wifi password, I'd probably give it to them.

IMO the threat 99.99% of people should worry about are botnets, whether created by state-level actors, criminal gangs, or script kiddies. These vulnerabilities are not interesting for those purposes.

skrap··on Raise the capital gains tax and treat investment earnings like ordinary income
In supply-constrained markets, wouldn't any benefit from this eventually accrue to landlords rather than renters? Put another way, if landlords are charging what the market can bear, and the market can suddenly bear 25% more, won't they just raise prices over a few years to eat up that new wealth?
skrap··on Instant runoff voting is the system we need
I wish we could just try something. Ok, so maybe IRV is worse than some other things, or maybe it's better. Let's try it. Or let's try range voting. Or approval. Or Condorcet IRV. Or whatever.

We have lots of choices of voting systems. If we only had a way to decide! I hope the irony is not lost on all you bikeshedders out there.

Quit bikeshedding. Start advocating for change. Start at the local level. Get your city or town to switch to the system of your choice. Don't just post on the internet about it.

skrap··on Ask HN: Do you get good applications from “Who is hiring?”?
I've not received one single usable resume. Lots of headhunters regularly send me email now, though, so the admonishment to not use the contact info provided for commercial purposes is not being heeded. I've given up posting.
skrap··on Middle-Class Families Increasingly Look to Community Colleges
When I graduated from a far-from-top-10 CS BA program in 2002, I couldn't get the time of day from any of the top software firms. I spent 9 months throwing resume after resume down the corporate waste chute. Then I noticed that Apple was holding a recruiting event at MIT, so I crashed it. Didn't mention that I wasn't from that school. A month or so later I got the job that launched my career.

Not sure what the lesson there is. But maybe a community college grad should consider finding ways to get through the school-based recruiting filter which is all too common in tech.

skrap··on Ask HN: How can felons find programming jobs?
I really hope you find something, and never having being in your situation, it's hard to know whether I'm being helpful or not. But have you considered working on open source bug bounties?

skrap··on After rising for 100 years, electricity demand is flat
I usually go to Ocean State Job Lot or Home Depot. There's a wide selection for $1-2/bulb. I like Cree or Philips as brands.
skrap··on After rising for 100 years, electricity demand is flat
More than 99% of the total lifecycle energy of a incandescent is in its use.

Let's just repeat that.

More than 99 percent of the total lifecycle energy of a typical incandescent bulb is in its use. That includes raw materials, manufacturing, and transport.

skrap··on After rising for 100 years, electricity demand is flat
I'm gonna have to call you on that one. Even high-end brand LED bulbs are so much more cost efficient than incandescent bulbs, it's the rational act to immediately replace nearly every single incandescent.

Whether you're interested in saving energy or saving money, you should remove and smash your incandescents.

Here's a blog entry I wrote with some of the simple math: https://blog.sense.com/articles/smash-incandescent-bulb-swit...

skrap··on Who Goes Nazi? (1941)
I'd really suggest you read the book I mentioned, even just the preview pages available via Amazon. Your intuition doesn't match what is depicted. Their actions were not a reaction to the threat posed by the Jews, nor did they justify their actions in that way.
skrap··on Who Goes Nazi? (1941)
I get what the author is getting at. Not sure I agree. Many years ago, I read "Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland", which analyzes interviews with the actual men performing the slaughter of innocents at the end of the war.

The conclusion that book drew was different than this article, and makes more sense to me — that it's not "mean people 'go nazi'", but ordinary people who 'go nazi', given a system which relieves them of responsibility for their actions. "Just following orders" was the typical & honest answer, if I recall. The men didn't feel they bore a moral duty to disobey, because these things just had to be done, or so they were told.

So, if I can riff a bit on the article's themes... maybe mean people will hand you the gun, but anyone will pull the trigger, if they're told to do so.

skrap··on The outdoor community made water filtration a must for a reason
The death toll from cholera in Haiti from the outbreak after the 2010 earthquake has reached just around 10,000 _dead_, 830k cases, according to wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Haiti_cholera_outbreak

Filter your backcountry water, people.
