skorecky··on Show HN: Made a website for shooters to track target practice
Odd, did it say what the error was?

[edit] I think I found and fixed the issue. Thanks for mentioning it.

Yes, working on having a better landing page for sure. I just pushed a small update to clean it up a bit. Been trying to get some design help though.

I like the idea of a default entry. I may have to play around with that.

skorecky··on Real or computer-generated: can you tell the difference
Yeah, easy to make computer generated look more realistic when the image is blurred.
skorecky··on Protest tonight at Apple Store SF. We can’t let governments backdoor the iPhone
But protesting by definition is objecting what someone has done. So it doesn't really make sense.
skorecky··on Protest tonight at Apple Store SF. We can’t let governments backdoor the iPhone
Why protest at an Apple store? Apple has already come out saying they wouldn't create a backdoor. Go protest the FBI HQ or something.
skorecky··on Nissan's self-parking chairs
Yeah, I would assumed that is the case as well :)
skorecky··on Nissan's self-parking chairs
What if you're in the chair? "Get back to work!" claps
skorecky··on My Little Sister Taught Me How to “Snapchat Like the Teens”
I know so many 20 somethings that use snapchat. Here I am still not getting it. "But you can send a picture in a text message..."
skorecky··on Apple fans are coming to hate Apple software
It's certainly a factor. I also like that it's way more rugged than 99% of the other PCs out there that use cheap plastic.

skorecky··on Apple fans are coming to hate Apple software
Apple does very aggressively update software to work best with the latest hardware. Sadly this does cause some negative effects for older generation users but without taking advantage of the newer stuff those users get screwed as well.
skorecky··on Apple fans are coming to hate Apple software
It does suck the repairability is next to none but they have the best looking hardware out there. I have yet to see any other manufacture come close to what Apple can do hardware wise. A metal laptop enclosure is basically unheard of outside of Apple sadly. I would like to see someone step up.
skorecky··on Apple fans are coming to hate Apple software
I think there is a decline in the quality of Apple's software. However I think there is a correlation between the amount of users and complaints / bugs found. Now that Apple has a large and growing user base the seeming quality is also degrading. However I could be wrong, just my opinion.

Personally I haven't had as many issues as described in the article e.g. Preview has always worked fine for me.

However the biggest issue I do have is anything network related. Getting new messages in Mail is terribly slow, iTunes constantly gives me an error then loads the album or whatever just fine afterwards.

skorecky··on [dead]
Only a couple times though, need that sweet sweet karma!
skorecky··on Tech Companies' Best (and Most Unusual) Perks
You mean ping-pong tables and free snacks aren't enough to keep you happy while being under paid? /sarcasm

Yeah, I mean I know it's cheaper to have some perks to make it look like you care, but honestly shorter days and decent pay is more than enough.

skorecky··on Tech Companies' Best (and Most Unusual) Perks
REI offers two whole days of paid time off?!
skorecky··on Banned by Tesla
I'm not twisting facts, just stated he didn't even stay after the announcement to checkout the car, that's on him. Also this was a reply to the parent comment talking about seeing the car.

I'm also not saying it was right for Tesla to ban him, that was shitty, but getting so angry over a late start and ranting about it in a blog post directed at Elon also wasn't a great choice.

skorecky··on Banned by Tesla
The guy left at 9:00, 15 minutes after they started the event. Doesn't sound like he even tried to see it.
skorecky··on A Traffic Cop’s Ticket Bonanza in a Poor Texas Town
Ah, I missed that. However that doesn't mean increasing the speed limit would be bad. Instead of speeding tickets they could focus on aggressive drivers constantly changing lanes and other more serious maneuvers that could cause more danger.
skorecky··on A Traffic Cop’s Ticket Bonanza in a Poor Texas Town
I'll try to find the source, but from another story I've read they are being issued the plate scanners for free in exchange for a percentage of the collections they make from using the scanner.
skorecky··on A Traffic Cop’s Ticket Bonanza in a Poor Texas Town
> Police higher-ups say the traffic unit has made Port Arthur a safer place to drive

They don't show any data to back up this claim that they make throughout the story. IMO part of the problem is that the speed limits are far too low for modern vehicles. They keep them low so they can continue to collect.

It's not about safety it's about money. How is going around with plate readers making anyone safer? Unless they were using that technology to find a fugitive, but they're not they're using it to collect.

skorecky··on No retailers, your brick-and-mortar sales don't have to suck
I stopped reading after the fifth annoying inline gif.
skorecky··on How I Built a Side Project
Yes, my days of sysadmin work just to have an app in production are over. Heroku pipelines are great too!
skorecky··on How I Built a Side Project
Many pet projects you can run for Free on Heroku. Their docs are pretty straight forward, not sure what your hiccups were but I've deployed quite a few sites to Heroku without much if any issues.

The asset pipeline in rails use to cause some issues but I think that has all been resolved with the 12 factor gem.

Also setting up a VPS is in no way easier than Heroku. You have to install nginx, ruby, mysql etc. Then you have to setup routing. Then you have to learn all sorts of sysadmin stuff so you don't get hacked. Setting firewall permissions, mysql permissions. Then you want to deploy that app. So you have to setup capistrano or whatever. Next thing you know day wasted.

Heroku?

    git push heroku master

skorecky··on Interviewing is Broken
> 5) Bring them in for a few days, see if they can set up the dev environment, assign them some bugs nobody else wants to fix, have them meet everyone.

Not crazy about this suggestion. It's not always that easy to just take a few days off from your current job just to interview for another. Even if you're getting paid.

skorecky··on Chicago and Los Angeles Are Next Up for Google Fiber
> incarceration of multiple public officials and a raw deal for the city.

What? How?

skorecky··on Chicago and Los Angeles Are Next Up for Google Fiber
Really hope this happens. Our current choice of Comcastholes or AT&T's Slow DSL is ridiculous for a city like Chicago.
skorecky··on Is it even possible to lose weight?
Losing weight is easy. Diet and Exercise is all it really does take (Yes, I've done it.) I'm now a personal trainer and powerlifter.

The problem is a few things:

1) We encourage people to be overweight. You see all the time on facebook and advertising "Fat is beautiful" or "You're perfect the way you are". Sure be happy with yourself but that doesn't mean you're healthy.

2) The food we eat with out even thinking are full of empty calories. Snack food, soda, etc. All lead to over eating, filling unsatisfied which leads to more eating.

3) Everyone is so "busy" with everything in their lives that can't imagine spending 30 minutes to an hour at the gym every other day. Cut out an hour of TV, Leave work a little earlier (you're probably over working) and do some good for yourself.

4) These fad diets, fake pills and other bullshit don't work. People want something that works instantly. Doesn't work, you need to put in the effort.

You can blame genetics or whatever you want, but unless you really try and give it 100% you won't see results. Yes, it will take longer than a couple days.

skorecky··on Why nobody will steal your shitty startup idea
Does this really need to be said anymore? Also all the gifs on the page are incredibly annoying.
