1. coders will use every available resource, and

2. there is no limit on resources.

The consequences can be left to the reader (re: the article in this thread), but these two postulates are the source of all ills in commodity and open-source software today.

skopje··on GOG has had to hire private investigators to track down IP rights holders
Agreed. Playing VGA games in a DOSBox is nice, but I recovered my 386sx clone from my parents' garage that still boots DOS 6.22 on 5-1/4 floppy and I very much wish I hadn't given away all my disks (diskettes :) before I moved.

Call me naive but I think that's some good news.

thanks for the suggestion i just installed it (macos). it solved problem #2, I'll have to wait and see what happens with #1 and #3. I like it but it's like going to a new grocery store and everything is in a different place than i am used to thanks!

skopje··on Why I have to buy doughnuts with cash
...yeah but it is a pain in the ass. i end up with a percentage of unspent money every week that i have to coalesce into new bills of useful denominations. that leftover screws up my accounting system and takes extra work to put to use. i'd rather have every transaction i make tracked by visa to make my accounting cleaner and not need to futz with the whole process. the downsides you list i've never really encountered since 1992, you need better evidence of failures (unless you live in some underdeveloped nation?).
skopje··on A 4k-Room Text Adventure Written by One Human in QBasic No AI
I downloaded the rooms.txt file and the word "handcrafted" is doing some heavy lifting. It's like one sentence per room. Did I miss something? I don't want to play the game (I hate text adventures), but I want an idea of how much effort went into this.

Example:

--ROOM 22 START-- Village of Oathmoor 23,0,0,21 You find yourself in a narrow, dimly lit alley. An ELDERLY WOMAN sits perched on a broken stool, her piercing gaze fixed on you with an unsettling intensity. --ROOM 22 END-- --ROOM 23 START-- Village of Oathmoor 24,22,0,0 The road ahead begins to slope gently upward, winding its way past abandoned, barren buildings whose windows gape like empty eyes. --ROOM 23 END-- --ROOM 24 START-- Village of Oathmoor 0,23,25,0 The eerie stillness around you is oppressive, broken only by the creeping sensation of unseen eyes upon you. A chill snakes down your spine. --ROOM 24 END-- --ROOM 25 START-- Village of Oathmoor 26,0,0,24 A faint melody drifts toward you, its haunting notes carried on the breeze. The aroma of a meal cooking over a distant fire stirs both hunger and curiosity. --ROOM 25 END-- --ROOM 26 START-- Village of Oathmoor 27,25,0,0 You stumble upon a makeshift camp where people dance in defiance of their sorrows. The leader of this ragtag group locks eyes with you, their expression unreadable. --ROOM 26 END--

So basically you're a linux user who is mad macOS isn't linux? Don't get me wrong, Tahoe is the worst GUI upgrade ever, but the last time I had problems with lack of native Mac-Arm support was ... 2021? I think your arguments are topical and don't point to a significant problem with the build ecosystem. Yes, rare niche packages haven't all migrated to Arm, but ... that's all you got?
skopje··on Retiring Windows 10 and Microsoft's move towards a surveillance state
I switched from Google Docs to Libre Office a few months ago. I'm surprised how buggy LO is, because I tried it a decade ago and it doesn't seem to have gotten any better. I don't plan on going back to MS or Google, but I am very frustrated with the number of bugs in LO's spreadsheets, so I try to keep my sheets simple and CTRL-S a LOT!

Examples: [1] I selected a range of cells recently, by clicking and dragging, and when I let go of the mouse button, all of the selected cells shifted up and to the right by one cell, and CTRL-Z didn't undo it! [2] I have a workbook and when i duplicate a sheet with a chart, the chart is blank, so i have to delete it and re-insert a new one. [3] Sometimes the left-hand X-axis is cut in half, and I have no idea why, but if I create a new doc it goes away. I really, really want to promote LO, but it is very buggy. I can deal with it but I don't think others would.

Thanks. Honestly I'm terrified about what is happening, and feel 100% impotent. I worry that no matter how many protests we have, he and his fascist ideology are still winning. Voting every 2 years doesn't seem to be doing much.

skopje··on Show HN: I built a simple ambient sound app with no ads or subscriptions
Back in 2008 I downloaded an app similar to this and then during one update 6 or 7 years later it vanished from the app store... and my phone! Been looking for a replacement since. I even studied Swift to write my own.

Thanks for writing the app, and not collecting any data! Reminds me of the glory days of the first app store before it all went to crap.

Also, I searched for the exact search string name of your app and you were STILL the third app down.

Yeah I was a burn-it-all-down person too when I was in my 20's. It hits differently now after 40 years of work and the desire to retire and play with my grandkids. I guess in the current batch of 20'something's eyes that makes me The Man. I admire their spirit but scoff at their lack of empathy, the same lack I had. Fucking irony.

Wish I had saved my VHS C++ Tutorials from 1990 with Bjarne Stroustrup. It was mostly him staring into the camera teaching C++. They don't appear to be on his homepage either. Bummer, because this was back before C++ went crazy, and they were a great intro to the "simpler" days.

skopje··on Boring Company cited for almost 800 environmental violations in Las Vegas
Thanks for listing these, this is really an impressive compilation. I see how naive I was. I assumed everyone agreed that Dodd-Frank was a great bill, and protection of FCC from being carved up by billionaires was also a good thing. Same goes for keeping drones from filling the skies, and putting guardrails on AI billionaires from running wild and breaking big important things. But clearly political alignment determines what is considered innovation. I think almost all but a few of these regulations are spectacular (except for the broadband one) and don't stifle innovation: they protect us from centibillionaires' greedy, vile nature to take more for themselves at our expense while providing a net negative (e.g., Amazon, Facebook, Oracle, megabanks, cryptobros, Private Equity for medical and insurance, etc.). I can see we are on opposite sides of the political spectrum here.
skopje··on Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26
I did the same on Tahoe and now the formerly glass buttons are grey with a weird blue shadow in the upper left. One example: the sound slider on the menu bar. With all the GFX turned on, it is a transparent blob, with the reduced settings, it's just a weird gray with a nonsensical shadow.

I'd really, really love to read internal presentations leading up to this downgrade of a once proud UI (let's hear it for System 7) to what is now effectively a collection childish digital baubles.

Yes. 28 years ago I founded a small a software company (4 employees) that made test software for a Tier 1 automotive vendor's ECUs. I sold the IP to them in 2007. Next question? Or do you think my background makes my opinion invalid for another reason?

>> >Many regulations are terrible and serve as a huge hindrance to innovation

What is an example of a regulation that was a "huge" hinderance to innovation?

Looking at the past 40 years of the US technological progress and the only thing I seen hindering innovation are the tech companies themselves through monopoly, monopsony, patents, and regulatory capture. (Unless the last one is what you meant, but that's a regulation put in place by a monopoly to maintain its monopoloy and not to protect the air we breathe).

EDIT: I am referring to "innovation" not "execution".
