and where even truth is not an airtight defense in a libel case. Thailand is not a good country in which to run your mouth on social media

Comments are snippets of text, typically short, written by consumers of content in order to share their opinion of or reaction to that content with other consumers.
skolsuper··on Even After Fix, Windows 10 Update Is Botching File Operations
Isn't it a flaw though? What is the point of ASLR then? Asking as a noob

When I hear 7zip I associate it with security vulnerabilities. I remember reading a couple of articles last year that said 7zip was maintained and distributed by a single person with not-stellar security practices, and most mirrors online are hosting old, insecure versions. Therefore I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that doesn't "know what they're doing" wrt security.

skolsuper··on Ask HN: What is the dark side of working at a successful startup?
Zenefits?
skolsuper··on Introduction to Augur, an open-source, decentralized betting marketplace
Both right: on an individual level the people with the most money might or might not be the smartest, but in aggregate the money moves towards the smarter bettors, weighting their votes higher in future rounds, improving the aggregate intelligence of the market.

Maybe you're agreeing with GP? Analysing the companies would not be a profitable way of picking stocks in a genuinely Efficient Market.
skolsuper··on Reverse Engineering Wipeout (2015)
This article got some interesting discussion on reddit, especially the threads from this comment:

skolsuper··on Rules of optimization
$current_product has a table with 3 rows that is used for config. Every other table has a foreign key to this one. It was designed as a multi-tenant application that never got over 3 tenants. Other tables are over 1billion rows already. The 3-row table is mostly json columns, and is basically untouchable now.
skolsuper··on I Write Letters to CEOs
It's a valid point, this is post-hoc data analysis so you need to be careful of the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_sharpshooter_fallacy
skolsuper··on What Sucks About Erlang (2008)
I also want to know this. We have a team of 3 people maintaining our microservices infra (services written in NodeJS), out of ~15 developers. It feels like a waste, these (monitoring, logging, deployment etc) are all problems that have been solved many times over.
skolsuper··on Twitter urges users to change passwords after computer 'glitch'
I think the joke is that both Github and Twitter are famous for being built on Rails (although Twitter just-as-famously required a move off of Rails in order to scale)
skolsuper··on There's No Fire Alarm for Artificial General Intelligence
It's worth reading. With that said, the jist is that for every technological advance that hindsight will later show to be a precursor to AGI, it will be easy for AI "luminaries" to explain why it is not AGI, until it is, and then it will be too late.
skolsuper··on Fast food and obesity in developing countries
+1

Also, I've seen discussion of "fat-shaming" elsewhere ITT, and I think it's relevant, but shame isn't the right word. Seems like Asian cultures are frank about discussion of weight (and salary, and other things), but without the taboo of talking about it there isn't the associated shame of being talked about, in my experience.

skolsuper··on Amazon and Apple hit by EU tax crackdown

skolsuper··on China's Central Bank Bans ICOs
I think Tesco, Sainsbury's etc are just resellers of banking services. Actual banking licenses are the thing there have been none of for 100 years iirc, I don't think GP comment just pulled that assertion out of thin air.
skolsuper··on Same day ACH: moving payments faster in the USA
Which site is that? Last two times I tried to buy bitcoin in the UK, I had to send Euros to some Polish bank.
skolsuper··on Car Cost per Year - New vs Used
As written, Option 4 you only have a car for 3 years. I'm pretty sure that's not what you meant, but fixing it makes the math below also wrong: if you keep a car that is 7 years old for 10 years, it's an average of 12 years old in that time period.

edit: my mistake, I guess you want to have 3.333 cars in 10 years for Option 4. Carry on...

skolsuper··on The Konami exodus
Maybe I'm misreading your usage of the word "absolute", but in my country of residence the truth is NOT a defense in libel/defamation cases. Of course, that is an absurd situation, but it is what it is.
skolsuper··on The Slow Criminalization of Peer-To-Peer Transfers
Whistleblowing websites or donation to banned media sources.

Their argument is pretty clear.
skolsuper··on Hard-won lessons: Five years with Node.js
> It's only fast because you already have the knowledge.

No, when I said "from zero" I meant from zero knowledge.

> You have similar concerns with node (What's npm? etc...)

What's the "etc..."? Install node and you get npm with it.

Writing a REST service IS simpler with Node when going from zero, I know because I have done (or at least attempted) both from zero in the recent past.

> The idea that it's a faster to achieve in a dynamically typed language is a myth.

Doesn't seem like you're open to discussion on this

skolsuper··on Hard-won lessons: Five years with Node.js
You're leaving out a lot when you say it'd take you "five minutes with a simple Maven/Gradle build". What's a maven? What's gradle? What's groovy and where can I learn it?

I literally don't know the answers to these questions so the same task would take me hours, possibly days. Getting from zero to JSON api in node.js is fast by comparison.

Note I am not arguing whether or not it's better in the long run to be the guy that went from zero to node.js or zero to Java, that's a separate discussion.

skolsuper··on Zerocoin implementation bug
I went looking for this again today. It's not the article I was talking about, but you might find this interesting:

Amazing how apt some of them seem, it looks human-curated.

This one feels so right -> These hoes so trifling

no idea...lost -> desolation

skolsuper··on Zerocoin implementation bug
Another major bug caused by copy+paste. I seem to remember a security researcher article months (years?) ago that identified this theme, showed a way to grep a codebase for likely c+p errors and found a load of bugs in real production code that had remained hidden for years. I think I landed there from HN, but my google-fu is failing me now, can anyone else remember it?
skolsuper··on How We Make Money at Stack Overflow
SO intentionally does not want to integrate payment of any kind for answerers because of Motivation Crowding Theory[1], the idea that intrinsic motivations like altruism can be crowded out by extrinsic motivations like profit, which is problematic because intrinsic motivation is generally stronger and effective for longer than extrinsic motivation.
