skittleson··on Running TypeScript on ESP8266/ESP32 Devices
That was the primary decision for working with TypeScript over Python. While I like, it's not my daily language of choice.
skittleson··on Running TypeScript on ESP8266/ESP32 Devices
Devices memory vary in size https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESP8266. Minification has been common with JS for years so it should be easy to add that in with the rollup.js build. Some checking be a nice to have.
skittleson··on Running TypeScript on ESP8266/ESP32 Devices
The primary goal is to add TypeScript for types and abstractions. I dont think the JS runtime the TypeScript transpiler targets matters as long as it can be transpiled to the current version. I wasnt aware of that project but now I will look into it.
skittleson··on LibreTexts – Free The Textbook
For libretexts, a pdf can be generated then added to most ereaders.
skittleson··on Why isn't there a universal data format for résumés?
I've seen thousands of resumes... it would be nice to have a baseline of requirements for specific positions. An RFC style guide for human parsing . Too many resumes miss what is important.
skittleson··on Node-RED: How an open-source tool is establishing itself in Industrial IoT
I've used it for critical ops successfully over the course of a few years. It's not perfect but it's also not a toy app anymore.
skittleson··on Show HN: I built an app to create repeatable checklists to help with ADHD
My name is also Spencer and have been diagnosed the same . This is a great niche app. Any app I've used for todo lists couldn't get this right so I'm glad to see it. The one feedback is a configurable task max limit. My time is very valuable so I have to limit what todo to the most valuable tasks.
skittleson··on GM has signed an agreement to extract lithium from beneath the Salton Sea
Totally agree. It's so bad out there. What's the worst they can do?!
skittleson··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
Many times I wanted a small portable tool that I can manage 3d printer / cnc gcode files. So I built just that. https://github.com/skittleson/GcodeController
skittleson··on Ask HN: What's your absolute favorite tech stack, after having tried others?
Finding KISS solutions for the project. MVP can also be as a simple as a html and vanilla js to nm validate an idea.
skittleson··on Ask HN: How much of your time at work as a software engineer is spent coding?
I'm a senior full stack engineer that is considered a lead developer on a project usually. I spend about 20 to 30% of my day coding. The rest of the time is code reviews, pair programming, reading, and meetings.
skittleson··on Fastly hires entire Wasmtime team from Mozilla
wow, that is truly amazing!
skittleson··on Will VBA Die? (2019)
No, it will not.
skittleson··on Sham news sites make big bucks from fake views
It's been like this for years. Been losing trust in those major news sites. Ad blocker helps. Avoiding them is better.
skittleson··on Open-Source Home Automation
Oh cool! Going to check this out. I've been using the node red dashboard for ui.
skittleson··on The first non-bullshit book about culture I've read
I'm dumbfounded... this totally makes sense. I know what my holiday reading will consist of now. Business books with no actionable or repetitive content bores me after awhile. The last few years I've been getting the cliff notes first then if I find any substance in that, I buy the book.
skittleson··on The first non-bullshit book about culture I've read
Those insights are right on. I respect those dev managers beyond measure... they have to say no often and deal with the org red tape.
skittleson··on Open-Source Home Automation
I started with home assistant then moved to node red. Both have rich communities and plugins. If you want to do more javascript, use node red.
skittleson··on Raspberry Pi 4 WiFi stops working at 2560 x 1440 screen resolution
First thought as well. Didn't see a way it could determine that tho.
skittleson··on I'm not burned out, I'm pissed off
I can relate to the author. Worked for now acquired payment gateway that was for PCI compliance level 1 (over 6 million transactions a year). Getting upset over outdated practices by either the company or the security company testing our software was regular.
skittleson··on Please Buy Less
"Give each person a carbon ration" agreed. Achieving this with each individual could be the hard part where as enforcing a company to "behave" and/or limit consumers from buying excessively could be quicker win that achieves the same goal.
skittleson··on Please Buy Less
Raising prices does this but the side effect could be putting individuals that really need a product in hard spot. Creating laws on single use non-biodegradable material and/or the amount of it could be beneficial. This will increase prices slightly on those goods.
skittleson··on Makesite.py – Simple, lightweight, and magic-free static site/blog generator
wordpress is great for quick sites. Long term maintenance is where I have been bitten.
skittleson··on Tell HN: Google should drop Quora from search results
Agreed. The answers always seem like cliff notes. Just enough to point me to other resources. Also, that expertsexchange drove me crazy... we gave in as a company to buy a subscription.
skittleson··on Ask HN: Best Static Site Builder?
After using all the popular static and non static site builders, I ended up creating a single utility js with nodejs. Some markdown and handlebar support... a little scrappy but proud of it. Opensource too... https://docodethatmatters.com
skittleson··on Ask HN: What are your favorite statistics and probability textbooks?
Thought this book had good detail without going too deep for some dev work I was doing: "Practical Statistics for Data Scientists: 50 Essential Concepts" https://amzn.to/2MUmZt7
skittleson··on Cash vs. Flow
"a rather unique conversation with our investors about organically growing the business with it’s own cashflow and we structured a deal that accommodates that. So we’re not in a position where there is tremendous and urgent pressure to become very big very quickly or risk the board firing us."

Setting milestones for cashflow seems like main concern for any startup. It appears a lot of startups blow through cash without the ability to see the burn rate. This problem-solution is defined here Lean Start-Up http://amzn.to/2CdVEfH .

I love the fact that was talked out with the investors before the money was taken. Shows forward thinking which must feel good at the end of the payback period.

skittleson··on Go accepts patches from GitHub pull requests now
I wonder that too. Even competing code review tools are very similar.
skittleson··on How Apple Plans to Root Out Bugs, Revamp iPhone Software
Being customer obsessed is what this implies in my mind. "The renewed focus on quality is designed to make sure the company can fulfill promises made each summer at the annual developers conference and that new features work reliably and as advertised..."
skittleson··on Hidden work when launching a SaaS
The biggest challenge for us was a bunch of small tasks that we HAD to do. It was driving us nuts until we realized we could either find a service, make it dead simple (MVP style) or just not do it until we absolutely needed to do it. We worked on being customer obsessed with the absolute list. We ended up with a great product. I can't take full credit, took a lot of advice from great blogs and Lean Startup (the summary is better if you don't have the time. http://amzn.to/2H8isRI).
