skilled··on Reddit is cracking down on political talk tonight
Just had a look, it is worse than this post implies. Actually crazy that a platform the size of Reddit can essentially eliminate a narrative altogether for no reason other than to hide and quiver behind reality.
skilled··on Ask HN: What's Wrong with IRC?
Integrations and whatnot would be my best guess. But smaller projects and groups still use IRC.

I would wager it is a generational thing also.

skilled··on Ask HN: What's Wrong with IRC?
Shell sessions and bouncers sort of alleviate the history issue if that is what you really need. I always thought that not having history was part of the magic of IRC.

That said, all your private messages as well as any messages in public channels can be logged and will persist on your PC until you delete them.

skilled··on Cloudflare automatically fixes Polyfill.io for free sites
> We have taken the exceptional step of using our ability to modify HTML on the fly to replace references to the polyfill.io CDN in our customers’ websites with links to our own, safe, mirror created back in February.

I get that they want to do a good thing, but is this something you agree to when you sign up as a Cloudflare customer? If so, that’s kind of crazy.

edit: I am talking about both free and paid users. A toggle does not discount my question whatsoever, especially if this is on by default for free users. I am asking specifically about terms of service.

skilled··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
But of course it is positive. This is a huge deal, even if only one that will benefit himself. I don’t know anything about any secrets that he showed any lack of regard for, but I definitely know about the files he exposed that showed the US government is a bunch of cowards who manipulate people and then use the full force of the law to defend themselves when caught with their pants down.

Instead of making people guess what you mean by nuanced, you simply should go ahead and provide that nuanced perspective and see if anyone wants to engage it.

skilled··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
If you care about this news and you are able to do this financially, consider supporting Julian's fee for having have had to take a private plane for this entire process:

> Julian Assange has embarked on flight VJ199 to Saipan. If all goes well it will bring him to freedom in Australia. But his travel to freedom comes at a massive cost: he will owe USD 520,000 which he is obligated to pay back to the Australian government for the charter flight. He was not permitted to fly commercial airlines or routes to Saipan and onward to Australia.

skilled··on [dead]
The article is just random AI slop. They didn't bother installing Tox and asking LockBit for proof either.

I think it's just them being petty about something and memeing, but if not then we will know in ~30 hours.

skilled··on Training AI
Has there been any progress made on this at all since ChatGPT? I remember when the Zoom story broke on their TOS, and that story got covered in morning news in USA.

But Zoom was about using videos for AI training, everything else is about text. And it looks like nobody really cares about text, except for maybe NY Times which is suing OpenAI.

What is the deal with this? It pisses me off that a few major companies are about to gobble up the entire internet and capitalise on it solely for themselves. Not going to give back anything to anyone, they even want you to pay a monthly fee just to get access to your own data.

skilled··on EU Council has withdrawn the vote on Chat Control
Chat Control is the main proposal, the following paragraph clearly says that they have until 2026 to agree on what that proposal is going to look like. Hungary has already said that it has plans to continue negotiations.

This outrage is about forceful E2EE monitoring and not letting EU users to view links or images unless they agree to the said monitoring. What happened today puts an end to that for the time being, but it is unlikely to come back.

skilled··on What happens to our breath when we type, tap, scroll
It improves you. For example, being able to handle stress better isn’t useful just in personal life but also professional.

In my experience, complete introvert, it helped me enormously with anxiety. But it did take some work, such as working through emotions that I had bottled up. If you stick to your practice then you will work through it.

skilled··on What happens to our breath when we type, tap, scroll
So learn it. It is one of life’s greatest secrets.

What the original commenter said is correct, meditation helps you see how thoughts arise in the moment, and with practice you can get to a point where there is very little noise and instead you have a broader view of ideas and your life in general.

It is also calming, for your entire system. Learning to monitor and control your breathing consciously is a serious mental workout. If you have never sat down to practice it, you might surprise yourself as to how much is going on in your own mind and how the wheels and cogs just keep turning.

skilled··on Safe Superintelligence Inc.
The blanket statements on the SSI homepage are pretty mediocre, and it is only the reputation of the founders that carries the announcement.

I think this quote at the end of this Bloomberg piece[0] gives more context,

> Sutskever says that the large language models that have dominated AI will play an important role within Safe Superintelligence but that it’s aiming for something far more powerful. With current systems, he says, “you talk to it, you have a conversation, and you’re done.” The system he wants to pursue would be more general-purpose and expansive in its abilities. “You’re talking about a giant super data center that’s autonomously developing technology. That’s crazy, right? It’s the safety of that that we want to contribute to.”

skilled··on Perplexity is a bullshit machine
WIRED seems to have gotten another quote from the CEO which downplays the problem. Other than that, this article reads like a combination of everything that was said in these articles:

Perplexity AI is lying about their user agent - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40690898 - June 2024 (527 comments)

Search Engine Perplexity Is Directly Ripping Off Content from News Outlets - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40619857 - June 2024 (10 comments)

---

I have yet to see any journalist call them out on stealing images[0] (no license + hotlinking), but also benefiting from Google Search because those scraped pages get indexed and as of this month, Perplexity gets 3M+ monthly visitors from Google. Completely automated with no proper attribution, stolen images, and presents itself as the authority source.
