skilled··on Show HN: Search >34k niche blogs and RSS feeds
Looks good! How much is something like this going to cost you?

Asking because my immediate thought was that these types of projects usually get their lights turned off rather quickly because of costs.

What is your source for the feeds?

It has always been a thing. As someone who spends a lot of time in /new - I think the system is pretty good, with very few exceptions here and there. And, also from what I have observed - the front page does get moderated quite heavily, and unworthy stories (or obvious spam) get thrown out pretty quickly.

skilled··on Apple Vision Pro U.S. Sales Are All but Dead, Market Analysts Say
The thing costs a bazillion dollars, what did they expect… people to suddenly wear this for day to day tasks?

I said it on the day they first announced it, as soon as the media hype was over, no one would ever mention it again.

Other than price, not sure what else they could do to make it appealing.

skilled··on Lessons from 20 Years Hacking MySQL
There is a part 2 also, which is linked at the bottom of this first post, for that reason I removed the mention of (Part 1) from the title.
skilled··on Second factor SMS: Worse than its reputation
Twilio said the data was accessible between May 10 and May 15, 2024[0].

I mean, even if we disregard the auth codes thing, which according to CCC were being generated on a static timer, if someone did get access to this bucket - they would have gotten away with a juicy list of phone numbers and names from some of the top companies, at the very least.

I'm not sure how hard it would be for an S3 scanner to guess "idmdatastore", so it is difficult to say if anyone else got in. Even if not, a live database storing live data without encryption or anything is crazy. I feel like IdentifyMobile will feel the wrath of this no matter what.

skilled··on Ask HN: Where have you found "your people" in real life?
Travel. Didn’t look for anyone but kept bumping into people, which ultimately led to doing excursions together or just having dinner/lunch. Have met a lot of interesting people like this, including oldschool software engineers, artists, writers and doctors. Some have turned out to be ones to keep for life.

They are not indexing new pages. I should have made that more clear.
skilled··on Reddit's Robots.txt Changed
Yes, it makes sense from a 600 million monthly visitors point of view, but that would still be a pretty interesting development if they don't respect it.
skilled··on Reddit's Robots.txt Changed
Every search engine other than Google has stopped indexing pages from Reddit.

Google has not commented on whether they plan to respect it. Rich Results[0] say they're using a version from June 25. The new version was last modified July 1.

IBM invested in OpenAI? IBM bought GitHub?

IBM doesn't move like this, even if those are acquisitions.

Microsoft is very focused on where the money flows, and they have adapted to the change of times.

skilled··on Ask HN: Why do we have the "hide" button in HN
Sometimes an article will land on the front page and it will disgust me so much that I have no choice but to hide it. It’s either that or I will lose self-control and spray radioactive waste all over the people who are commenting inside the said article’s thread.

For this reason alone, it is useful.

You can also use it to bump stories from second page, especially if something you are not interested in is dominating the front page.
