sker··on Why I left Google
I wasn't expecting anything specific, I clicked it because it was at the top. There have been many "Why I left [Big Corp]" in the past, subconsciously I was expecting something like that, or at least not a motivational speech.
sker··on Why I left Google
> I think the primary reason that people here are so negative about it is that they personally aren't living authentically, that is to say true to themselves. If you're not living authentically yourself, an encounter with authenticity in someone else will bring up bad feelings, and so the default response will be to come up with all sorts of reasons to shame the other person.

Not really. I didn't read as far to get to the part about authenticity. It's just not the kind of content I expect to find at the top of Hacker News. Many others probably feel the same way.

And please don't bring up the guideline about what is appropriate content for this site. That guideline can be used to encompass pretty much anything.

sker··on Cookieless cookies
I see, the normal Chrome session is not reset, but rather linked to the new ETag in incognito mode, at least in this example.

You could probably have submitted a bug to the Chrome team and get a bounty for this thing. It kind of allows to track the incognito session linking it to a normal session.

sker··on Cookieless cookies
The two sessions could not be linked, but after I close incognito, the counter and the stored text in normal Chrome are reset. Why does that happen?
sker··on Cookieless cookies
It works even if you use incognito mode in Chrome. So incognito is not as incognito as we thought.

Edit: not really, the article explains it but I hadn't finish reading it.

I bet Bing goes down all the time and nobody notices.
sker··on Callbacks as our Generation's Goto Statement
Yes, C# tends to copy F# features in the way of compiler-syntactic-sugar. I wonder if Type Providers will be next. Async/await have been around for a couple of years and I haven't heard of the next big C# feature, other than Roslyn.
sker··on Callbacks as our Generation's Goto Statement
The C# designers outdid themselves this time. I'm surprised they managed to made this feature so simple and succinct, especially for an "enterprise" language. Those two little words (async/await) seem like something I would expect from a language like Python or Ruby. Had it been Java, it would be called AsynchronousBureaucraticProccessDispatcherFactoryFactoryFactory.

I will just quote what I said a few days ago:

It's worse than that. Since you can't editorialize titles and some authors like to give their articles poetic, meaningless names like "A butterfly in the sky," when the actual article talks about a security exploit in Bitcoin, coded in Go and released by Wikileaks.

I often find myself ignoring interesting articles on HN only to go read them later on reddit with a much more descriptive, editorialized headline.

Right now there's a good example of this problem on the front page. The article about the Android/PRNG security flaw is aptly editorialized as "Google confirms Java and OpenSSL crypto PRNG on Android are broken," but the original article is titled "Some SecureRandom Thoughts," which is meaningless and I would never have clicked it under any circumstances. Thankfully the mods left this one alone.

> I'm considering jumping from aspnet to a 'slower' framework like django and I'm not basing my decisions solely on the results of this collaborative benchmark

I'm not basing my decision solely on these benchmarks either, this is just the straw that broke the camel's back. Microsoft doesn't inspire me too much confidence on the future of .NET and neither does Mono. The .NET open source community has never taken off. And changing my main development language is not such a big deal, I already work with five languages on a regular basis.

I hope to see better results on future tests. I hope OWIN improves the situation for ASP.NET. And I hope future versions of Mono focus more on performance. But that's a lot to hope for and I'm not holding my breath.

sker··on Unfair comparisons
Benchmark Nazis will always complain about any benchmark, no matter what. Don't let them dissuade you from continuing work on this amazing project.

Personally, this project has prompted me to change my career path from C# to something else, due to the abysmal performance of ASP.NET. I'm still waiting to see more tests, especially the asp-stripped one, and hopefully some OWIN/Katana in the near future. But for now, I'm seriously considering JS/Node.js or Scala/JVM as my main development platform. So thanks.

Is there any date for the next round?

sker··on What makes Lua tick?
The thing is indeed fast. Looking at these benchmarks[1], it always makes it to the top 10 on the tests where it appears.

Edit: Apparently, OpenResty[2] is largely responsible for the impressive performance in those benchmarks, and Lua may be secondary.

sker··on CSS Absolute Centering
I agree, I just think it's well designed and consistent. Plus, CSS can also be a royal PITA, that's why I take refuge in back-end development when possible.
sker··on CSS Absolute Centering
XAML is very well designed, not for the web though. It was designed from the ground up to be consistent with only one implementation, as opposed to CSS, which evolved over the years on multiple implementations. It can get quite verbose since it's XML-based, but at least what you code is what you get.
sker··on Two Providers of Secure E-Mail Shut Down
Reminds me of when they took Megaupload down. There was a domino effect where a lot of torrent and file sharing sites decided to pack their things and go home.

First the file sharers, then the secure emails. I wonder who's going to be next? The reddits? The HNs?

sker··on Slashdot founder Rob Malda on why there won’t be another Hacker News

sker··on Project94 – allocation of 1- and 2-character .org domain names
T.ORG should go to the Tor Project.
sker··on Ask PG: Why is everybody hellbanned?
Try submitting something positive about Microsoft, but the negative posts will quickly make it to the top.

I'm starting to think it's well deserved.

sker··on Ask HN: Is it okay to accept work in a language you haven't done before
If you decline, you would be making the same mistake some companies do by only hiring developers with previous experience in a very specific set of technologies.

Every developer who works with WordPress/PHP/MySQL, or any other technology, at some point didn't have experience with them. Everyone has to start somewhere or there would be no developers at all.

Whether you disclose your lack of experience to the client depends on the nature of the job. If they only need a basic installation with some plugins and theme customization, take it. Give a reasonable time frame for delivery and deliver it.

If on the other hand, they need you to scale their multi-million page views network of blogs, or develop a mission-critical super-complex plugin in a short time frame, then you might want to tell them you haven't done this before, but are willing to work with them to help them achieve their goals.

sker··on Ask HN: How many open tabs do you have and when does it become a problem?
I used to have over 200 in Chrome until I discovered OneTab. Now I have 289 tabs in OneTab plus 20 regular tabs.
sker··on Ask HN: Should I learn a few different languages or become a master of one?
Both. There are plenty of resources in the brain to master one language and be competent with many others.
sker··on Effeckt.css
That's much better implemented than I expected. Thanks for the link, I'll see if I can find a use for it.
sker··on Xamarin raises $16 million to help you go mobile
At least they have a free version to play with. They didn't even have that a while ago.

I'm not in the mobile apps business, but if I were, I would consider the price worth it.

As a freelancer, I see a lot of people requesting Android and iOS apps. I don't see myself developing in both Objective-C and Java. With Xamarin I could cover three platforms with one language, which also happens to be my language of choice for productivity.

sker··on Xamarin raises $16 million to help you go mobile
These guys are the reason why I haven't jumped ship from .NET. These days I call myself a Mono developer more often than a .NET developer.
sker··on Effeckt.css
That was the one that got my attention too.

How long until people start using similar effects to turn their single-page web app into a multi-page web app? Similar to Linux 3D desktop, compiz and the like.

sker··on New online master's degree to train the data scientists of tomorrow
Thanks. I've been spending too much time on HackerRank lately. This Kaggle site will provide some new, interesting challenges.
sker··on Quine Relay
I made it to the first Fortran, 24 out of 50:

    gfortran -o QR QR.f && ./QR > QR.f90
gfortran: internal compiler error: Killed (program f951)
Giving up now.

sker··on German discount host Hetzner launches new servers
That's one awesome project you have right there. I was just thinking of making something like that for F# with data from Codeplex and Github. But I guess your already-existent product blows my non-existent idea out of the water.
sker··on ASP.NET MVC, Web API, Razor and Open Source
How long ago did you experience those issues? I still have some time to go until I launch whatever it is I decide to build. I hope the Mono team finds a solution for them eventually.
