skeletal88··on The War on Estonian Forests (2022)
Where are these grids and fences used, and why?

What you will see in Estonia - forest is cut down and then some kind of plow makes lines in the forest to prepare the ground for planting trees. The trees are planted and in the next few years there will be lots of new growth, bushes and small trees that have grown from seeds or didn't get any sun below the old trees. The newly planted trees are sometimes hidden betwen the bushes and grass etc, but they are there.

Source: I go orienteering and have had to search for checkpoints on these former clearings or have made the mistake of trying to run through them.

skeletal88··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
Where I live Viaplay bought the licenses for showing football matches on all levels for the next years. Previously we could see the football WC and European championships, and national games on the national tv channel. With the new viaplay deal the games would only be possible to see on their platform or whatever it is.

Fortunately they fell into financial troubles before the deal became active.

They massively overpaid for showing all of the matches, to force everyone interested in football to get a subscription. But probably most people just watch it on tv, because "hey, why not, national team of x country (or our own team, for whom winning a match is a miracle) is playing, lets watch it". Not "I will happily pay tens of € each month to some company to watch stuff".

skeletal88··on A proposal to switch Fedora Workstation's desktop from GNOME to KDE
Would be great, KDE is the way to go, gnome is trying to force it's ideason the users too much
skeletal88··on Germany may introduce conscription for all 18-year-olds
This is some kind of idealistic thinking.

Putin wants war, he doesn't care if your head of government/country has children or not. He just wants to expand his soviet union or to gain more influence or whatever the current reason for his invasions is.

This "let the politicians fight it out" would only make sense if there was a real disagreement between two countries, not just one guy saying "I want your land and your people" and the other one going "fuck now, I don't want anything to do with you".

skeletal88··on Sony overturns Helldivers 2 PSN requirement following backlash
It is not only about requiring the sony account in countries where it is not available. It is also about forcing players to log into yet another useless account, when the game is bought from steam. This practice is widely hated by gamers everywhere. If I buy a game on Steam, why would I be required to log in to some other account or launcher to actually start the game.

The publishers wish to somehow capture the players with their own launchers, but this is never going to do them any good and is widely hated.

skeletal88··on Roll-Invert-Unroll: An easier way to replace a duvet cover
Then it is like changing your shirt every two months? You do sweat when sleeping.
skeletal88··on Postgres is eating the database world
Pgadmin has gotten lots of bad feedback. I'm using dBeaver or the IntelliJ sidebar to connect to the database.

Dbeaver is more useful. But you can do everything from the command line. You use sql to write database migrations anyway, no?

skeletal88··on The KDE desktop gets an overhaul with Plasma 6
This 3 to 4 was 15 years ago, time to forget about it already. The developers have learned from it.
skeletal88··on The KDE desktop gets an overhaul with Plasma 6
Yep, this was sad. Amarok used to rock
skeletal88··on Mass trespass on Dartmoor to highlight England's 'piecemeal' right to roam laws
These limitations are difficult to understand. I guess that lords and landowners hsd to repress the peasants in the uk with all possible means but.. this is silly.

Here,in Estonia, everyone can walk on anyones land unless it is someones private home or its surrounding yard (lawn, fields, etc).

You can walk, hike, collect berries and mushrooms for private use everywhere (unless it is on an industrial scale).

If your piece of land is on a sea or lake side or a river, then you must provide access to it, 5 metres from the waterline must be acessible for everyone and can't be fenced off.

I once saw a news item from the uk where someone from Latvia was collecting mushrooms, the land owner didn't like this and the mushroom gathrer had to pay a big fine. Even though nobody was stolen from since the people in the uk don't know anything about wild mushrooms and thry would just rot and go bad. Kind of absurd

skeletal88··on Surely You're Joking, Comrade Beria (2021)
Yes, but the thing is that Poland and Ukraine did not really want to be a part of the evil empire. It just enabled some ambitious people who were not russian to raise to a leadershio position.

If a high ranking leader would have been estonian then you still could not say that because of this the soviet union would be "less russian" or something. Most of the people, officials, party members etc were russian and the soviet union was born from the russian empire.

skeletal88··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
I wish people would stop defending apple here.

The reason for apple doing something is not that it wants its users to be safe or to protect them. It just wants to make more money by preventing other companies from doing stuff on its phones. This is it. If it would be possible then it would ask for 50 or 79% of sales on the app store, if it could it would take a % of every transaction done in Safari

skeletal88··on Strawberry case study: What if farmers had to pay for water?
Well.. if your grass would dry out and become yellow without watering it, then watering is a luxury. The water in deep wells will eventually run out. Why waste it on grass?

skeletal88··on Meta is banning people from advertising after running ads for Python and Pandas
In 1984 they don't have laws, only crimes, so whatever you do, you have to guess if it is illegal and will be punished or not. It is on purpose to keep the population in constant fear
skeletal88··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
There are just too many ways to do things in Ruby. How many forms for an if-else or for loopin can you name in Ruby? Just as the simplest example.

Monkeypatching is also awful for readability.

Explicit imports are way more readable than things appearing into current namespace implicit kind of stuff like it happens with Ruby

You are just spewing russian propaganda talking points.

Russia requested that nato would leave all the eastern european countries that had joined, Poland, Baltics, Czechia, etc. Then russia could also start invading us after it had taken Ukraine.

Russia was mot interested in diplomacy, they just wanted Ukraine one way or other.

skeletal88··on EU sends Apple stark warning over USB-C charging on new iPhones
This happened because the EU forced them to agree on a single charger/cable standard and it happened to be micro-usb for a while. Before this every mobile manufacturer had their own version of a charging AND data cable, separately..
skeletal88··on Ways to shoot yourself in the foot with Postgres

skeletal88··on I worked at Google for -10 days
Other countriesin the world, besides the US. In European countries you can't just tell someone tonnit come tomorrow and not pay anything. Sure you csn tell them to not come anymore if you want to keep your secrets or whatever but the company has to pay for this notice period like the person was working there.

When I or colleagues have changed jobs then we have given a month or more notice, continued working etc. Only when someone is fired for total incompetence or just not showing up you don't want to see them anymore ever in the office so the company pays for the notice period time.

skeletal88··on PayPal has restricted our account after we invoiced a key containing “ALEP”
If I don't get the 3d secure authentication from my bank when buying something with a credit card then I don't trust this site. The places I buy from don't even offer paypal as an option, I guess they must be too expensive for the local web shops.
