skeeter2020··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
>> You're probably aware of this already but luckily a lot of service manuals can be found online in PDF form.

Not official ones for John Deere tractors unless they were leaked from authorized service agents!

skeeter2020··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
the issue is not that this information is undocumented, it's that an "authorized service center" gets information that an "owner" does not. Also cars are not "small open source utilities" with undocumented arguments; do you think that an auto manufacturer has hidden, untested diagnostics that only the dealer uses?

>> don’t think there should be any requirement that they are forced to do additional work

At one time seatbelts, airbags, emission controls, etc were all viewed in this category. Now we have regulations enforcing aspects of all of these. Why would diagnostics be different?

skeeter2020··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
A tractor - and all farm equipment - is ridiculously expensive, the core platform is not much different from previous generations and they are used by a respected segment of our society to grow us food. All of this adds up to make JD's impact large and feel much worse than the relative nitpicks we have with many car manufacturers.
skeeter2020··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
This is just not true - their machines are purposely opaque and loaded with DRM. Regulation in this area could potentially make the entire system more efficient and cheaper for everyone at the cost of JD's predatory practices. In addition to owners there are lots of independents who could work on JD equipment, but they are all literally locked out.
skeeter2020··on The Last 24 Hours Are the Opening Scene in a Horror Movie
How the hell do such intelligent people (or is it BECAUSE of their ability to bend minds, including their own) reconcile "I believe this is dangerous and wrong" with "I am actively working towards this"? I get changing your perspective, but the majority seem to be able to simultaneously hold personal beliefs and work that are diametrically opposed.
skeeter2020··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
Similarly I've stopped saying "It's crazy that..." and changed it to "It's wild that ..."

What do you call it when tamer words are more impactful? Example: I've found "Dum-dums" > "stupid idiots". Is it because they're less triggering for emotional responses to the words themselves?

skeeter2020··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
I've never seen oil prices decrease due to any regional disruption; the market is global. If the price in Alberta went up when the Straight closed, I wouldn't hold my breathe for Europe in this scenario.
skeeter2020··on Coyote v. Acme (1990)
Trailers have been a big part of the movie-going experience as long as I've gone to theatres. Coca-cola, Ford and Government of Canada ads? Not so much.
skeeter2020··on Extinct Tasmanian tiger's 'snap' unlike any living mammal's bite
Apparently I fall into the same trap as the early Europeans: trying to pair Australian animals with something similar from familiar North American species. This is always a mistake!
skeeter2020··on Apache Iggy, a message streaming platform in Rust, graduates to an Apache TLP
What a crock of shite. Of course there's going to be some dead one when you have this many, but there are also projects that are foundational and many exciting new ones too:

skeeter2020··on I used AWS cognito for a startup. I wouldn't do it again
>> and even rawdogged a custom JWT system ...

This may now mean something along the lines of "struggling to grind through..." but is based on the original meaning of having sex without a condom, typically with misogynist overtones. You might want to avoid it for this style of writing and audience.

skeeter2020··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
That seems unlikely because AWS needs to build proprietary features within their services to lock in paying (enterprise) users. The problem now is that labs will inevitably focus on this work, which I view as opposed to local, in-process when your paycheque comes from selling hosted services.
skeeter2020··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
TL;DR AWS will either acquire MD next/soon, or (more likely) keep them around for the optics that they are totally not going to starve the community of anything other than DuckDB as a hosted AWS service.

From the MD "about page":

The idea for MotherDuck came after Jordan Tigani, MotherDuck co-founder and chief duck-herder, saw DuckDB in action and thought, “Wow, this is amazing! someone should really build a serverless version.”

...

Hannes and Mark, who founded DuckLabs to focus on the core technology and build the world’s best analytics database, were looking for partners who would build a commercial cloud offering.

skeeter2020··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
agree - I was really uneasy with the lede in their v2.0 preview:

"DuckDB has been an in-process database since day one. But people have asked us – very persistently – for a client/server mode, and we have finally caved"

This was already satisfied by numerous projects and products, and feels like a "me too" attempt to capture AI-based workflows. DuckDB always felt like "SQLite for Analytic Data" but I fear these changes and now acquiring the org leading technical direction is where they deviate for good. AWS is so unnecessary for what DuckDB can (and should, IMO) be; MongoDB jumps to mind as a cautionary tale.

skeeter2020··on Git at any scale
I'm not a user of twitter/x/whatever but every. damn. time. I click on an X link it's made me sadder and stupider, and the world a slightly worse place. It's the dirty bathwater of humanity.
skeeter2020··on Stop eating Lady Gaga's Oreos
All punks - and quite a few non punks - are aware of NOFX. They refused to play the game yet had a 40+ year career and even bigger impact on punk music since the late 80's.
skeeter2020··on Stop eating Lady Gaga's Oreos
IMO the tension is a feature, not a bug. We (humans) put far too much emphasis on the current state (is Cobain a mainstream success or counter culture hero?). We need to focus on the change we're observing; Cobain was an alternative that we watched catch on and take over everyone with a pair of Doc Marten boots regardless if they were a punk or a sophmore at Duke. The tension exists in the change we are living within, and it does not move at a steady, universal state. I liken trying to decide "What is this?" to trying to stand still in a raging river. It doesn't really matter as the current churns past, with logs zipping along and rocky outcrops threatening. The "movement" either consumes itself (ex: Pop Music), is terminated prematurely (like Cobain) or consciously never lets itsef happen (ex: Nofx)
skeeter2020··on The August 17 outage
operating at a loss and non-operational because of outages are very different. If they can't maintain service levels nobody - AI super user or quant, old-fashioned human - will be happy.
skeeter2020··on The Amazon Tax
it's very attractive to try and build a progressive tax system that swings too far the other way too. Economically some sort of tax free base and a flat rate is the best but politically it's way better to attack here and carve out these exemptions... the biggest winner is tax prep software.
skeeter2020··on The Amazon tax
This is why the long-term survivors tend to be pretty mid chains & franchises. They've got the marketing down and the food is an afterthought.
skeeter2020··on Judge relying wholly on AI in order is covered by judicial immunity, court rules
>> When a judge has made a terrible decision for dumb reasons, you appeal it

This is not how the legal system works. You need grounds for the Appeal - such as procedural - AND need to get another court to agree with your grounds AND be willing to have the case heard again. None of these are gimmes, and they all take time and money.

skeeter2020··on Asus Bike Booster
Good plan; instead of a decent bike lock, and asking for some (read: ANY) enforcement & punishment of bike theft I'll just "improve society".
skeeter2020··on Asus Bike Booster
nobody steals bikes to buy milk for their baby either.
skeeter2020··on Asus Bike Booster
bikepacking bikes rarely have mud guards; maybe something small on the front. dropbar touring bikes often have full fenders though.
skeeter2020··on Asus Bike Booster
You must be from somewhere where winter means rain vs. large amounts of snow. I can see if you're doing a road ride with a group (where they often run tight) they'd ask for fenders. Here a road bike would be useless once winter hits.
skeeter2020··on Asus Bike Booster
and no one who rides a legit road bike would be seen dead on a "road ebike".
skeeter2020··on Asus Bike Booster
>> so I can pay more attention to riding safely and effortlessly.

If shifting gears takes to much of your attention, I'm concerned for all of us, and why do you need to pay more attention to riding "effortlessly"?

skeeter2020··on Lovable raises $400M Series C
