skalpelis··on Ask HN: What happened to rational discourse?
I don't disagree on any particular point but I wouldn't call XCode mediocre in comparison to Adobe Flash (which is the most impacted tool in this decision).

Also, I believe, they are at least partly doing this to improve the quality of the App Store ecosystem and do this to avoid the tens of thousands of shite autogenerated apps that litter the app store and this move is more of a cleanup instead of screwing over the few people who prefer a different toolset for development and generally care about the quality of their applications. Baby with the bathwater, so to speak.

skalpelis··on Has the Spam War Been Won?
Aside from your squeaky clean inboxes there is another front in the spam war - the botnets in which your, your relatives, friends, and colleagues' infected computers may be participating unknowingly - and in this aspect the situation is worse than ever.
skalpelis··on Google Shows Off its Tablet Concept
I'd guess that the biggest strength of the iPad against this Google Tablet Concept is that it actually exists.
skalpelis··on "Terra" is Rot13:"Green"
I suck. I thought we were still talking about rot13-ing words and that I should point out that Julius Caesar could not have known what the modern English language word "earth" means and that it is the same as "terra" in Latin, i.e., a point about historical linguistics instead of astronomy and natural philosophy.
skalpelis··on "Terra" is Rot13:"Green"
He had no idea what the modern English word "earth" means, even if he somehow could have stumbled upon it.
skalpelis··on "Terra" is Rot13:"Green"
Also, he had no idea what "earth" means.

Ever wonder why there's no concrete buildings after the Roman Empire and before 1756?
skalpelis··on AT&T To Curb Smartphone Data Use
So "AT&T To Curb AT&T Use" then?
skalpelis··on HotPlug allows hot seizure and removal of computers from the field
Actually, couldn't you cut into the power cable instead of the wall plug?
skalpelis··on [dead]
It definitely is an improvement and it is beautiful, however, I see two problems already with this:

1. moving parts - this would make the plug a lot more liable to break; 2. I assume this plug doesn't have the fuse.

All in all, wouldn't there be more advantage just to switch to the EU plug instead of another design for the UK plug?

skalpelis··on Google to limit free access to news sites
> They want to force users to register before viewing any articles, but they also want Google to index these same articles (and a forced registration would prevent that). Google wants the same thing (to index the pages), but seeks to avoid special exceptions in its algorithm (e.g., maintaining a whitelist of sites who are allowed to cloak).

Even if the cloaked-paywall-articles get indexed, couldn't that same fact - that they are behind a paywall and not easily accessible - be interpreted that they offer lower quality search results and thus should be listed further down the organic search result list?

skalpelis··on Sweden's Internet Broken by DNS Mistake
See the løveli lakes, then.
skalpelis··on Steve Ballmer: Chrome And Safari Are Rounding Errors
It might explain why his software is hated so much, if it routinely rounds off 5+%.
skalpelis··on Holographic storage, phase-change memory coming soon
What, again?
skalpelis··on How to take down an F-117
Only if by team you mean unit and by relished you mean awash in sheer terror, day and night, of getting killed by a missile they never saw coming.
skalpelis··on Never pay retail again.
Or, I either raise the price or lower the employee discount so that there is a sufficient margin and get all my employees to sign up and profit.
skalpelis··on Dark Flash Photography - UV/IR Flash Instead of Visible Light
A fast lens might help (if you're into SLRs). f1.8 50mm prime is cheap, though anything faster will cost you.
skalpelis··on MIT Students Love iPhone-Powered Doors, Hate Actual Keys
Yes, the iPhone doesn't have an IR transmitter, for one.
skalpelis··on Interesting thoughts on Windows 7 design from a long-time Mac user
The Mac software updater actually runs weekly in the background, it just doesn't bother you in case no updates are available.
skalpelis··on Ant mega-colony takes over world
Well, if the ants ever start causing significant damage to humans due to this genetic similarity (attacking crops or even, in a more sci-fi spirit, attacking people), shouldn't it also help eradicate them more efficiently due to them being one large monoculture?
skalpelis··on 17th century Damascus sabres contained carbon nanotubes
Or because of firearms proliferation. It was the 18th century, after all.
skalpelis··on The Case For Working With Your Hands
> This style demanded that I project an image of rationality but not indulge too much in actual reasoning

Now that's a very eloquent description of bullshit-artistry.

skalpelis··on [dead]
It's a fanboy rendering, done in Maya and 3DS MAX, just like the credits to the video say.
skalpelis··on Lithium in water 'curbs suicide'
It's already there - it doesn't break down completely in the digestive tract and some of it gets flushed out with the urine, which, well, sooner or later ends up in the water supply.

skalpelis··on Lessons from a failed startup
Isn't the problem with most of current DRM solutions that they make paying for content equally or even more of a pain in the ass than just downloading it for free?

skalpelis··on 19,000 UK credit card details posted on the Net ... and accessible on Google
Is that the prosthetic finger from the guy who had a finger-flashdrive in an article a few days ago?
skalpelis··on Why Selective Colleges - and Outstanding Students - Should Become Less Selective
How, exactly, can a selective college like Stanford, Harvard, MIT, etc become less selective? By increasing the campus size tenfold? Staffing it with more, though less capable professors? As long as there is a size and quality limit, there always will be exclusivity.
