sk55··on What I learned from running a concierge search engine
Very cool! This reminds me of crowdsourcing research done by Aniket Kittur as part of CMU's social computing lab.

Here's the relevant research paper: https://joe.cat/CHI-ka/

Looks like a very similar process you landed on except their approach has many workers crowdsourcing the answer together.

sk55··on Dietary Fats and Cardiovascular Disease: An American Heart Association Advisory
This article implies the opposite of the claims in this study.

https://www.bulletproof.com/diet/healthy-eating/good-fats/

"Saturated fat got some negative press back in the 1960s, when a scientist named Ancel Keys published research that claimed it caused heart disease. You’re probably familiar with the theory — that the saturated fat in butter, red meat, and egg yolks drives up cholesterol, which builds up in the arteries, blocking the flow of blood to the heart. The study was later debunked — it turned out Keys had manipulated the research to demonize fat. Later studies showed that saturated fat doesn’t raise levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the body.[15][16] Yet saturated fat is still shaking off its reputation as an artery-clogger.

The fact is, saturated fat is the most stable fat that there is. A stable fat is the least likely to be damaged by oxygen (aka oxidized). Oxidized fats accelerate aging, cause inflammation in the body, and make weaker cell membranes."

sk55··on Cryptocurrency scams cost owners $7.7B in 2021, driven by DeFi-based “rug pulls”
I don't think DefiPulse has everything. Here's a few more off the top of my head, though I'm sure there is more: - $5.5 billion (TVL on Eth L2s via L2Beat) - $4 billion (ETH 2.0 staking contract) - $17 billion (Polkadot staking) - $16.5 billion (Cardano staking) - $36 billion (Solana staking)

This echoes my experience as well.
sk55··on The real OnlyFans scandal is the unaccountable power of platforms and banks
From the article you linked, there was clearly coordinated groups trying to overtake:

>The officials did note that far-right groups – like the Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, and Three Percenters – may have collaborated in breaching the Capitol on the day of the riot.

These aren't scrubs either. Some of them are ex-military, armed civilians coordinating with other groups to breach the capitol and take hostages. This is not hyperbole, it's fact. Just because they didn't succeed doesn't mean it wasn't real.

sk55··on Download a CSV of your Amazon purchases
Looks like it's not a law, but a common policy from credit card companies.

> However, many credit card issuers have policies against sellers charging a credit card account before shipment.

sk55··on Download a CSV of your Amazon purchases
There is regulation where e-commerce companies can only charge you after they have shipped the item. That may be why it’s appearing as separate charges.

Twitter probably couldn't scale because of bad engineering, not because of RoR. For example, Shopify embraces the Ruby ecosystem and it scales up very well.

What makes you so confident that the US will ban bitcoin?

Also, if the US bans it then it's still valuable in much of the rest of the world. Bitcoin is antifragile in that regard.

sk55··on Ask HN: Can we stop linking to paywalls?
I think it's worth paying for good quality journalism. It's nice to support the institutions that serve a vital role to the checks and balances of our democracy.

Also, some of you may not know it but you can access the news for free through your local library. For example, I get the NY Times online via the Santa Clara County Library.

sk55··on I Was Google’s Head of International Relations. Here’s Why I Left
The timing of his change of heart seems politically motivated so I’d take a lot of what’s he saying with a grain of salt.

He doesn’t disclose that he’s running for Congress in the article and it seems very convenient to share these opinions as soon as he’s running for office.

sk55··on Org-brain – mind-mapping for org-mode
Mind mapping is more of a process, rather than a data structure. The process helps us brainstorm, recall, and visualize our ideas.

You're right in that some of the data structure behind mind maps can be represented using a tree. However, you'd lose lots of the benefits. For example, trees might not be as memorable or as unique as a mind map[1].

sk55··on 8,000 years ago, 17 women reproduced for every one man
A plausible theory as to why this can happen.

Apparently, millions of people (10% in a large region and 0.5% globally) are direct descendants of Genghis Khan, one of the worlds greatest conquerors - and also one of the most prolific breeders[1].

“Lots of men have lots of sons, by chance. But what normally doesn’t happen is the sons have a high probability of having lots of sons themselves. You have to have a reinforcing effect[1]”. You need to have a prolific breeder spread out over a large geographic area whose sons are also more likely to have many kids.

Maybe 8,000 years ago something similar happened.

sk55··on Q&A with Ed Catmull
What large tech company during his time did not engage in that practice?

I am not saying it was the correct thing to do, however, if it is that common in the industry, then it is a systemic defect versus a personal defect and should be treated as such.

sk55··on Coinbase Raises $25 Million From Andreessen Horowitz
I believe they're just working on fraud prevention. No need to sound the alarm. I bought bitcoins and my transactions were deemed high risk and cancelled after they received the money and held onto it for some time. Price actually went down from when I bought.

However, their customer service could definitely be improved. It's been over 9 days since I sent a request with no response and my transactions keep getting denied.

What are some better alternatives? And why are they better?

I've used GAE for some toy apps and a few websites with low traffic. It works great.
