sjwhevvvvvsj··on Google Left in 'Terrible Bind' by Pulling AI Feature After Right-Wing Backlash
Can you please define a) what you mean by “woke”, and b) exactly how Bloomberg (a financial publication aimed at the ownership class) qualifies?

Last time I checked with my sources at Antifa headquarters, they weren’t getting the latest treatises on Marxist thought from Bloomberg

sjwhevvvvvsj··on HP wants you to pay up to $36/month to rent a printer that it monitors
No idea, but this makes me less likely to go for HP metal next time I buy servers.

Who knows if the brilliant business minds currently in charge of the printer division will bring this magic to servers. I for one have no interest in finding out.

sjwhevvvvvsj··on Coinbase Shows Balance as 0
Well…” convenience “ isn’t exactly being delivered at the moment!
sjwhevvvvvsj··on Coinbase Shows Balance as 0
Yes, it’s utterly nonsensical if you truly believe in the original goals of Bitcoin.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on A retrospective on Requests
My main issue with urllib is it requires too much boilerplate and it ends up being harder to read the code at a later date in my experience. In general I prefer the standard library, but it’s a bit of a toss up in this case.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on U.S. opens UnitedHealth antitrust probe
At this point I’m open to new and exciting problems, whatever they may be.

Hell, I’d be ok with leeches making a comeback if it meant I didn’t have to pay a copay on top of a premium.

And they all drive Teslas with vanity license plates.

I’m very fond of both New York City, and spending time in nature for the same reason: you just don’t know what you’re gonna see when you walk out your door.

Am I going to hear a violin performance on the subway platform that is utterly sublime from a world class performer?

Am I gonna see the rarest bird in North America perched branch in front of me?

For me, the worst is the middle ground between crazy urban and pure nature where there is low probability of seeing anything exciting.

sjwhevvvvvsj··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
Yeah, its *super interesting* at first, but once the novelty fades you aren’t left with much.

That said, nowhere on earth had better driving directions on apps since people will notice the bugs on the drive into work and fix them. ;-)

sjwhevvvvvsj··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
They have to make their own, and it’s not fair trade.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on A new aspect of Google's spying
It’s more aggressive in guessing your location to comply with local laws. Ironically you may get less spying.

South Bay is just like a giant company town, it’s actually pretty boring - 60% of people work at the same handful of giant companies, the other 30% work at a startup, and the last 10% serve the first group fair trade coffee.

The weather and climate are amazing, but socially its suffocating when everybody you meet is a variation on a tired theme.

Ah, but you are be very wrong.

The fun thing about hacker news is that for all you know I may be directly involved in these issues and speak from direct first-hand, but highly confidential, knowledge.

Or I’m just some moron, posting opinions with absolutely no basis in fact.

Only I can be sure!

The FTCs fine on Facebook from a few years ago exceeds the combined value of all GDPR fines levied to date.

The Irish government fills its coffers with the largesse of tech companies that are headquartered there specifically to dodge taxes and regulation.

Likewise, while GDPR has some initial changes in privacy after many months of inaction tracking levels started to rebound because everybody figured out nobody was going to enforce it.

sjwhevvvvvsj··on The boundary of neural network trainability is fractal
Well, in some sense they don’t operate on language at all - but on mathematical representation of tokens derived from language.

I’m sure from your comment you are aware of the distinction, but it is an interesting concept for people to keep in mind.

sjwhevvvvvsj··on Big media publishers are inundating the web with subpar product recommendations
Ahh yes, another premature declaration of success by the EU, who haven’t properly enforced ePrivacy, GDPR, or a host of other regulations.

The EU is all talk and posturing, you can write any law you want but the tech companies already figured out compliance is optional.

Call it what it is: Fidesz is an arm of the Putin regime.

Fuck NSO Group.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on My notes on Gitlab's Postgres schema design (2022)
A simple function call as a wrapper for a well optimized sql query just can’t be beat for performance. I have never understood why anybody would use an ORM, it’s usually as much work to learn and maintain them as SQL.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on My notes on Gitlab's Postgres schema design (2022)
Yup - and you can’t code your way to real scale either. At real scale the game is all about data structures. Code just gets them from A to B.

Or as they say at Google, the job of SWE is “moving protos”.

sjwhevvvvvsj··on My notes on Gitlab's Postgres schema design (2022)
One thing I like about hand designing schema is it makes you sit down and make very clear choices about what your data is, how it interrelates, and how you’ll use it. You understand your own goals more clearly.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on Video generation models as world simulators
This is insanely good but look at the legs around 16 seconds in, they kinda morph through each other. Generally the legs are slightly unnerving.

Still, god damn.

sjwhevvvvvsj··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
I dunno, leadership is desperate and they can de-NTK if and when they feel like it.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on Problem solving across 100,633 lines of code – Gemini 1.5 Pro Demo [video]
The lesson was don’t get caught, not don’t do it.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
I’m going to have to try Gemini for code again. It just occurred to me as a Xoogler that if they used Google’s code base as the training data it’s going to be unbeatable. Now did they do that? No idea, but quality wins over quantity, even with LLM.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
I think the unspoken goal is to just lay off your employees and dump every doc and email they’ve ever written as one big context.

Now that Google has tasted the previously forbidden fruit of layoffs themselves, I think their primary goal in ML is now headcount reduction.

sjwhevvvvvsj··on Gpulist – Craigslist for GPUs
Less chance of fatal-to-operator malfunctioning tho.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on Gpulist – Craigslist for GPUs
Truth is indeed stranger than fiction - none of my cyberpunk bingo cards had this on it.
sjwhevvvvvsj··on Hi everyone yes, I left OpenAI yesterday
Again, that’s precisely what I’m saying. A bounded task is best executed against the smallest possible model at the greatest possible speed. This is true for business factors ($$$) as well as environmental (smaller model -> less carbon).

LLM are not AGI, they are tools that have specific uses we are still discovering.

If you aren’t trying to optimize your accuracy to start with and just saying “I’ll run the most expensive thing and assume it is better” with zero evaluation you’re wasting money, time, and hurting the environment.

Also, I don’t even like running Mistral if I can avoid it - a lot of tasks can be done with a fine tune of BERT or DistilBERT. It takes more work but my custom BERT models way outperform GPT-4 on bounded tasks because I have highly curated training data.

Within specialized domains you just aren’t going to see GPT-4/5/6 performing on par with expert curated data.
