sjs··on Tom Dale and Yehuda Katz's Pairing Setup
(This is not editor related but in a similar vein...)

At my previous job we had to get a QIDO[1] since I type Dvorak and switching layouts with Cmd-Space was driving us both insane. We would invariably forget to switch and either write gibberish into the file or, worse, hit some unintended keyboard shortcuts. After getting a QIDO it was fine though.

sjs··on Intel Medfield (tablet/smartphone SoC) specs and power consumption leak
At this point I won't be excited about Intel in tablets and phones until a major manufacturer announces products based on Intel's SOC.

Like Linux on the desktop, next year is always the year of the Intel tablet.

sjs··on NameCheap Did Reach Out Prior To The Blog
How is the NameCheap/GoDaddy drama going to change SOPA? Does anyone think that GoDaddy has enough weight to actually affect the outcome? And even if they did how does this drama constitute news about SOPA? We all new people are leaving GoDaddy en masse and many are going to NameCheap. Everything else being posted are meaningless details.
sjs··on Death to .DS_Store
Not to mention motherboards, batteries, keyboards, trackpads, and soon SSDs.

But I still wouldn't want them to stop making software. I really enjoy using a lot of Apple's software and software available for their platforms.

sjs··on Death to .DS_Store
For git users:

    echo ".DS_Store" >> ~/.gitignore
    git config --global core.excludesfile ~/.gitignore
If you spend many man hours dealing w/ .DS_Store files in source code repos you're doing something wrong.
sjs··on Why Hasn’t Safari Skyrocketed Like Chrome Has?
Chrome ruined Safari for me. When I fire up Safari more often than not I end up doing this: http://i.imgur.com/nDk2R.png
sjs··on Lisp is Too Powerful
There's no way to reduce something like:

    runOnUiThread(new Runnable() {
        @Optional
        public void run() {
            // ...
        }
    });
It's just the nature of the language. I honestly don't mind recent versions of Java all that much but without an IDE I would lose my mind in about 3 seconds.

And once you start writing something significant or that needs to work cross platform say hello to design patterns to work around the straight jacket.

I'll take Lisp, JavaScript, Ruby, or Python any day of the week. All languages have warts but to me it seems that Java has warts by design.

sjs··on [dead]

    /home/sjs % cat /etc/issue
    Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS \n \l

    /home/sjs % sudo -f
    sudo: invalid option -- 'f'
    usage: sudo -h | -K | -k | -L | -V
    [...]
Must be a joke.
sjs··on Lisp is Too Powerful
You could make the same argument about Unix, but I still say that with great power comes great responsibility. If you can't handle the responsibility maybe you should use watered down tools. That's somewhat bleak though and following that logic you end up with Java. Java is not the worst language on Earth but I doubt it's your favourite and no one writes it w/o a code generating and refactoring IDE.
sjs··on Anti Leonard Poettering petition: Stop writing useless linux programs.
If you don't like Fedora switching away from it will be more productive then fighting it on every change for all eternity.
sjs··on Anti Leonard Poettering petition: Stop writing useless linux programs.
I don't understand what the big deal is. If his systems aren't useful distros won't adopt them and no harm is done. If they are useful and distros adopt them then he has advanced the state of the entire Linux community.

This petition seems childish.

sjs··on 37signals doesn’t like you sorting stuff. Are you just remaking a spreadsheet?
Most would call that a filter, not a sort.
sjs··on Redis server built in Erlang
Changing every line of code results in a hefty patch.
sjs··on Scott Hanselman's 2011 Ultimate Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
It's a nice, comprehensive list. If you (or anyone else) feels inclined it'd be nice to have a heavily biased list of tools that in your opinion are the cream of the crop. A honed version of this bigger list.
sjs··on Scott Hanselman's 2011 Ultimate Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
He sounds interested to me. To be fair nobody needs 8-10 tools for regexes alone. Except maybe Jeffrey Friedl. Recommending one or two would be plenty.
sjs··on TextMate 2 (Public) Alpha
The problem is if you open a new window with "Open "filename.ext" in a New Window" and then try to do something like Cmd-T or Find in Project in the 2nd window it doesn't work. So you'd have to open the project again, jump to the file you want, and hide the drawer.

New windows should be a part of the same project they were opened from.

sjs··on TextMate 2 (Public) Alpha
I agree for the most part, but that sentiment depends on individual usage patterns.

For example opening multiple windows works alright until I want to Find in Project at which point I have to switch to the project window. A minor annoyance but day in day out that gets old fast.

sjs··on Facebook releases HHVM, 60 percent faster than its current PHP interpreter
By which you mean juvenile. I don't mean that in a condescending way. No one wants to work with a bunch of uptight folks. I think it's good too, but let's call a spade a spade.
sjs··on Motorola secures Europe-wide sales ban on iPhone, iPad
On the contrary, the community decided that text is not worth reading. It's very democratic. If enough disagree with the downvotes they can upvote the comment and make it black again.
sjs··on WebSockets RFC is now official
I let socket.io worry about that. Great library.
sjs··on CaterwaulJS "Nobody in their right mind would use this language"
The source is almost as interesting as the language. Craziest HTML I have ever seen render so nicely. It's a self-modifying Perl program.
sjs··on The biggest iOS 5 bug you've never heard of
Another bug is that this option only exists in the USA. Why?
sjs··on App Store Spam - 28 identical apps, one developer
Brighthouse Labs had over 3,000 apps for sale at one point. I'm not sure how many are left but Apple has pulled the plug on at least some of them.

sjs··on HP to Contribute webOS to Open Source
"under an open source license" is vague. I hope more details emerge soon. If it's a liberal license this could be very interesting.

Without a group leading development the project may languish so ideally a competent group, with a vision, decides to run with webOS.

sjs··on Motorola wins patent suit against Apple in Germany, iPhone/iPad to be banned
My guess is that many politicians just see this as the system working.
sjs··on Apple Submits Updated Campus 2 Plans to Cupertino
Small world :) There are at least a few of us here on HN (that I know of).

Everything I need is downtown so I rarely bus anywhere. Living out by uvic would be annoying without a vehicle though.

sjs··on Google Android: The Accidental Empire
Microsoft sells Windows licenses for money. Google gives Android away and hopes to generate ad revenue from people searching on those devices. Not a very apt comparison.
sjs··on Apple Submits Updated Campus 2 Plans to Cupertino
Same here in Victoria, BC. (population: ~300,000) I think downtown living in most cities is similar.
sjs··on World's First 128 Gb NAND Device
Indeed, some USB drives are actually just micro SD adapters.

sjs··on IntelliJ IDEA 11 is Out
It is. There is no room in my toolbox for sluggish and cumbersome tools.
