sjs··on Having fun with Redis Replication between Amazon and Rackspace
Adding more swap may not help depending in the workload. If you're using Resque then you need to process jobs faster than they are queued. In that case you also need to ensure jobs are queued on a new instance while the old overloaded one drains (very slowly).
sjs··on Sparrow acquired by Google
For most consumers it's the same. I'd rather pay someone a few dollars than maintain Thunderbird myself (for example) and most people realistically do not have the option of maintaining it themselves.

On the other hand I use a lot of OSS on servers and in the past on my workstations, and have modified them and fixed bugs and such. There are definite advantages but this particular one is not that useful on a large scale.

sjs··on JavaScript - "typeof" operator & null
I think it's only bad because it would break with future changes to typeof. Of course I may be completely wrong on that.

This works just as well and is more future proof though:

    function isNull(x) { return x === null }
At which point you don't really need a function at all. Perhaps the version using typeof is from a time when there was no === operator. Was that pre-ES3? I think so but am not certain.
sjs··on LeakedIn
Ultra paranoid. I like the way you think.
sjs··on LeakedIn
Use Ctrl-d to end input without hitting return and you shouldn't get a newline.
sjs··on Fish: Finally, a command line shell for the 90s
And when it cannot complete arguments, just hit `ESC h` or Alt-h to get help on the current command you're typing. (See also: `ESC q` or Alt-q)
sjs··on LeakedIn
Or call shasum or sha1sum and input your password on stdin so your shell history doesn't contain your password in plain text.
sjs··on Rick Santorum's Fake Donation Meter
It's still incredibly error prone and just bad practice. It's a telltale sign of a bad developer because a good dev would instinctively just use var without thinking about it. Good devs may make a mistake here or there but this is clearly well beyond a forgotten var keyword.
sjs··on Perian is shutting down
I went from LaunchBar to Quicksilver to Spotlight to LaunchBar. Can't live without that clipboard history! I don't use many of its other features anymore though.

Preview annotates things well enough that I never use Skitch, although Skitch is cool if you want to use the sharing features.

You might be missing out on Dropbox. I wouldn't want to go without it these days as I use more than one computer regularly and don't have to remember to commit 'WIP' on a branch before I head home, I just drop the mic and get the fuck out. YMMV.

Divvy is great. I use it w/ SizeUp every day and wouldn't want to go without them. I don't miss xmonad at all anymore.

Other than that I install 1Password, The Unarchiver, Growl, CrashPlan, Flux, TextMate, iTerm, and GitX and I am good to go.

I seem to shed tools as OS X improves as well, but I hope that nobody is using plan9 in 40 years! ;-)

sjs··on Show HN: Firebase, a scalable real-time backend
That doesn't sound right to me. People will rewrite code that already exists as open source because they don't want to take the time to understand someone else's code. But you're saying that some will reverse engineer a JS app from minified code rather than just rewrite it. Are there any examples of this actually happening?

I'm a curious guy and have deciphered small-ish amounts of minified and/or obfuscated JS before. It is absolutely not trivial. Especially if it's obfuscated.

sjs··on Try pressing 'm' on github
Unless I've missed something "m" is missing from that help. Odd.
sjs··on Mozilla may make Flash click-to-play by default in future Firefox
I don't have any trouble blacklisting domains for JS with current browser extensions. Why would it suddenly get more difficult?
sjs··on Try right clicking GitHub's logo
I doubt it's a matter of knowing or not knowing about those, it's just convenience. If my hand is not on the mouse then I will just Cmd-L gith<TAB><RETURN>, but if my hands are not on the keyboard then I will right-click Open In New Tab.
sjs··on Show HN: Firebase, a scalable real-time backend
It may not be at the same level as disassembling binary code w/ IDA or what have you, but un-minifying or un-obfuscating JavaScript is not a trivial exercise by any means.

(If I were in a nitpicking mood I would also point out that the source is what is fed into the minifier or obfuscator, not what comes out.)

sjs··on Poll: What are your prime hacking hours?
It doesn't matter if I'm excited about what I'm working on.
sjs··on Mozilla grudgingly adopts H.264
What's the worst case scenario if they suddenly start charging royalties to everyone next year?
sjs··on Mozilla grudgingly adopts H.264
h.264 is already ubiquitous and has been for at least a few years.

The MPEG-LA previously stated that they will not charge royalties at least through 2015 and relatively recently extended that right indefinitely[1]. Obviously we don't know their real intentions, but they have not given me any reason to distrust them so I take them at their word for now.

sjs··on The iPad 3 and Moore’s Law
Why was there no outcry about Apple including a YouTube app on iOS devices? If you think a few retina images will burn through data try watching a few hours of YouTube.

This is a (rare) complete miss for PPK. Very rash.

sjs··on Induction: A Polyglot Database Client For Mac OS X
> Moreover, all the popular environments support both GTk and Qt fairly well, and both are cross-platform, so you would actually be supporting more users than with a Mac OS-only program.

By that logic Windows should be first since it has the most users. Also, are you sure that the installed base of Gtk+ or Qt (or both) is greater than the installed base of OS X?

sjs··on Ask HN: Is Windows 8 = just Windows 7 + a new start menu in Metro design?
They are also betting on touch screens with Metro. MS believes that touch screens will be common on all computing devices in the next few years.

sjs··on Daring Fireball: Cookies and Privacy
I have run w/ 3rd party cookies disabled in Firefox and Chrome for some years now. A few sites used to break now and then and now it's practically non-existent.

It's difficult to picture many people wanting this at all. I agree with Gruber 100% on this.

sjs··on The desks of 37signals
I have no idea what happens on OS X but it works just fine.
sjs··on Github is my resume
Agreed. Things people write for fun are often quite different from what they write for work. I've written a few compilers and interpreters for fun but that doesn't mean I have the chops to do it for a living. I could learn to do it, but toy languages differ greatly from SpiderMonkey, V8, or LLVM. It's the difference between Ruby <=1.8 and JRuby or Rubinius.
sjs··on Github is my resume
I've gotten two kinds of offers because of my Github account. The first is a genuine, honest-to-goodness message written by a human in HR that thought my skills were a good match for their company.

The second arrived late last night and appears to be an automated message from Githire[1], though a real name was used in the From field.

I think this is a new trend and while I don't mind it at all now it could easily get out of hand.

sjs··on Show HN: Our first iPhone app, built entirely in JavaScript
Titanium was a nightmare. The edit-compile-debug cycle is so slow. I ran back to ObjC after two weeks. Development is faster and the resulting apps are better.

It has good points too but for me it was a net negative. You couldn't insert rows into a table view without it crashing, you had to reload the entire thing (that was in May).

I'm amazed at the results some people get with Titanium. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but I'm very familiar with web dev and found it intolerable.

sjs··on JavaScript: Warts and workarounds
Learn the language. You can't just outsource understanding the language you write code in. Even if you just mash together some jQuery you have to understand the semantics for `this` or you're going to trip over them later.

It's not even that complicated. Honestly, just put in 10 minutes one day to learn how it behaves. Even if you end up just always assigning a new variable (e.g. var self = this) it's better than putting your fingers in your ears and closing your eyes when you see `this`.

sjs··on Your Phone Loses Value Pretty Fast (Unless It's an iPhone)
That people do not find it bizarre is the bizarre thing.
sjs··on Your Phone Loses Value Pretty Fast (Unless It's an iPhone)
Even if you break out Samsung, Motorola, HTC, etc. you will still have the same problem within each manufacturer's lineup. Comparing individual phone models is logical but nobody does it for some reason.

It seems that people always want to compare the iPhone (a single hardware line) to Android (software) which is just bizarre.
