sjogress··on Is “Investing in improving structure” better than “Paying off technical debt”?
I can think of a few ways of combatting this though.

1) Slack in the system, meaning there is time without explicitly defined tasks that have to be done.

Basecamp does something like this where they take 1-2 weeks off scheduled work after a 6-week cycle to let their employees fix things up [0].

2) A good definition-of-done plus a technical culture focused on quality.

My current workplace has a culture of valuing correctness and quality over velocity, it has been a nice change of pace from my previous workplace where velocity was valued over everything else, leading to lower velocity as our code became worse over time.

sjogress··on Ask HN: How do you share/organize knowledge at work and life?
I think you are right in most cases, but I find wikis to be excellent for how-to/recipe kind of information.

These can be either technical (e.g how to bootstrap a new repository or how to connect to this database), organisatorial (e.g how to apply for vacation or how to apply for conference funds) or simply office related (e.g how to print something, how to refill coffee-beans on the coffee-machine).

sjogress··on We are clueless about how long things should take
Incredibly hard to do when you have the full weight of management on your shoulders. Especially if they back you into a corner in a meeting where you are the only technologist facing a whole hierarchy of management types.
sjogress··on Supreme Court: Suspending Parliament was unlawful, judges rule
Didn't May have a majority of 1 vote (Tories + DUP) through the negotiations though?
sjogress··on [dead]
How do you define risk?

At her age, and probably even more now, I'd be scared about how the media, politicians, neighbours, peers, and social media would treat me after such a speech.

sjogress··on React Hook Pitfalls
I'm enjoying hooks so far, but I think I understand where you are coming from.

The thing I enjoy with hooks is that you no longer have to juggle state/async in different methods. I'd usually forget cleaning something up, leading to longer dev-debug cycles. With useEffect I usually remember to clean up.

Also, so far the code we've written with hooks looks (subjectively) nicer than their class counterparts.

One difference between us might be that you have more experience than me using "classic" React. I'm relatively fresh to the React game, so I don't have many old habits or intuitions formed.

sjogress··on Review of Moneyland by Oliver Bullough (2018)
I'm afraid the Faroe Islands is an autonomous region within Denmark, not Britain.
sjogress··on How to build a plugin system on the web and also sleep well at night
As a Linux user Figma is the only good tool I've found that lets me design UIs.
sjogress··on Huawei Announces HarmonyOS
One key differentiator in my opinion between Google and Huawei is how they treat their own employees and partners.

I've worked closely with Huawei on a number of projects and they really work their employees to the bone, with terrible code, non-existent procedures, and a stressfull existence for everyone involved as a result.

sjogress··on How we built a GDPR-compliant website analytics platform without using cookies
Out of curiosity, which language did you choose to write the new code base?
sjogress··on A Learning Secret: Don't Take Notes with a Laptop (2014)
Personally, I'm far too undisciplined to enforce such rules on a tablet, so I got a Remarkable instead. Essentially an e-ink reader with handwriting capabilities.
sjogress··on Nils Nilsson has died
Never knew his name, but A* reached me as one of the first algorithms I implemented during my CS studies, and was the first one introducing me to the concept of heuristic functions.

It is truly impressive how far his work reached, almost every developer I have interacted with have at some point either used or implemented A*.

RIP mr. Nilsson, your legacy will live on

sjogress··on Show HN: Technical note app that builds a knowledge base
Feel the same way. Ended up buying a Remarkable (https://remarkable.com/) which has been like a one player whiteboard for my thoughts and notes. Highly recommended!
sjogress··on Exercise 'keeps the mind sharp' in over-50s, study finds
What about exercising at home?

If you follow a bodyweight fitness routine, for instance /r/bodyweightfitness' recommended routine[1], you'll only need a few pieces of equipment to get a good workout regimen going.

sjogress··on Converting a large React Codebase from Coffeescript to ES6
Coffeescript 2 has some breaking changes, most notably classes since it is moving to ES6 classes instead of its own implementation.

I'm with you though, I much prefer Coffeescript syntax over Javascript so I'm really happy to see it coming along.

sjogress··on Programming languages that are actively developed on GitHub
It is definitely less popular than it was pre-ES6, but it is still used.

I personally use it at work every day, plus I notice there are quite a few libraries (both open source and closed source) that are obviously compiled from coffeescript.

There is also work being done on a new version, CoffeeScript6, which will compile to ES6 and future ES standards. Check out the discussion at https://github.com/coffeescript6/discuss

sjogress··on Singapore witnesses the rise of the entrepreneur
Do you think it would be possible, and if so a good idea, for foreign talent to form startups in Singapore targeting foreign markets?
sjogress··on The oil bust is exposing weaknesses in the Norwegian model
I'm no economist, but from what I understand a lower valued NOK will over time help Norway's export industries (who have been suffering the last years due to high costs), which in turn will help the economy during a transition from oil and gas.
sjogress··on Rackspace announces AWS managed service offerings
Just out of curiosity, what is the use case for/strength of Mac servers vs IIS and Linux servers?
sjogress··on Ask HN: How did you overcome and avoid work related burnout?
If you want to meet new people, try joining a Couchsurfing meetup.

I was just on vacation in China, South-Korea and Japan, and Couchsurfers in those places were some of the nicest people I've ever met.

sjogress··on The new Wired.com
I agree that the share icons (and the right column) are irritaring (especially how they disappear and reappear when you scroll past full-width images), but I think the text column is kept narrow intentionally.

It has become a rule of thumb that ~680px is the sweet spot for text column widths, since it makes it easier to read. I'm not sure how much actual research that has gone into text column widths, but I know there has been some.

sjogress··on Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi 2
At least in my group of friends this was joked about as late as yesterday.

Definitely impressive of Microsoft and the RPI guys. I'm looking forward to trying it out for myself.

sjogress··on Firefox.html: Rebuilding Firefox UI in HTML
It doesn't have to be a big memory hog though.

At my day job I create apps for TV decoders. Most of those render and run in browsers.

The boxes have 1 GB memory, the browser uses just a small fraction of that. A lot of the browser memory is used for graphics (think bitmaps), the JS-heap is only 4 MB, not sure about the rendering engine.

Granted, we use SVG, not HTML/CSS, for most of these apps.

sjogress··on GitHub blocked in Russia
According to the article, Github was blocked due to "the placement of text describing the methods of suicide".
sjogress··on Nokia N1 Android Tablet Revealed
Nokia sold off its phone division along with limited rights to the Nokia brand name to Microsoft. Nokia is still a large company with several different divisions not owned by Microsoft.

This tablet seems to be from the old, independent Nokia, not Microsoft.

sjogress··on Komments – Simple comment embedding
I see that the footer says "a Hashrocket open source project". Is the source available on GitHub/Bitbucket or similar?
sjogress··on HTML5 is done, but two groups still wrestle over Web's future
The web stack is not just about the web anymore. I'm seeing it being used in all sorts of customer-facing products.

For instance TV set-top boxes very often use the web stack for their GUIs. Though, to be honest, they often use SVG for markup instead of HTML.

sjogress··on Windows 10 will come with a command-line package manager
I think we should differentiate between desktop and other uses.

If it is just (any flavour/use) of Linux vs (any flavour/use) of Windows, then I think the vast majority of people use Linux more than Windows. Routers, TV-decoders (and most of the streaming servers they use for on-demand content), NAS for home use, phones, etc all use Linux.
