sjf··on The cost of cheap TVs
I specifically bought a Samsung 'digital signage' display instead of a 'TV' because that was the closest I could find to a dumb TV, and I have the same experience. There is an accept terms & conditions popup that requires the internet that takes up the bottom third of the screen which comes up basically when doing anything with that involves the TV remote.

Even if you do accept the terms the conditions, it comes back as soon as you are disconnected from the internet. I am extremely disappointed with the experience.

sjf··on Choctaw and Irish History
They weren't treated like citizens though. Irish Catholics were prohibited from holding office, voting, owning property, having professional jobs, attending college, owning fire arms, etc.

I feel like I am going to regret this post, but anyway...

I am a woman in tech, and the whole thing feels slimy. I found it really creepy and couldn't watch more than a couple of minutes- I couldn't tolerate the voice changer for longer than that. But the whole concept is kinda gross because (as someone else pointed out below) the streamer is most likely an adult man, not a cute asian girl. And the persona is being performed for the benefit of other adult men.

Everyone is NOT getting a refund, only purchases through the Google store are being refunded, if bought hardware from Best Buy etc. you are not.
sjf··on US border forces are seizing Americans' phone data and storing it for 15 years
For people renting it is routine to receive mail for several previous tenants. Everytime you throw away a credit card sign-up offer for someone else, you are committing a felony.
sjf··on In microtransit, passengers order a shuttle van instead of having to take a bus
You don't take the bus, it probably is 45mins. You are not including time walking to/from the bus stop at both ends. Time spent waiting for the bus- this is probably the biggest one. Time for people getting on and off at bus stops and paying- in some places, for example in London, there are stops every couple of hundred meters on the route, it is kind of ridiculous.
sjf··on How ice cream became the ultimate American comfort food (2021)
There's not a lot of chains in the bay. This is really the most basic one I have been to.
sjf··on How ice cream became the ultimate American comfort food (2021)
At the Baskin Robbins closet to SF (Daly City) a single scoop is $3.59. After tax that's pretty close to $4 for the most chain-est ice cream I could think of. (The DQ doesn't have photos of their menu on Google maps).
sjf··on How ice cream became the ultimate American comfort food (2021)
The grocery store is always going to be cheaper. $4 is the low end of a single scoop in the bay area. And not for some hipster, plant-based organic ice cream either, this is at a regular parlor like Fenton's.
sjf··on “Google” programmers. How one idiot hired a couple more idiots
Everything else the OP listed is project and product management. You can get devs to project manage, you can't get project managers to write code.
sjf··on “Google” programmers. How one idiot hired a couple more idiots
If software engineering is not the 'hard part', why are dev salaries so high?
sjf··on “Google” programmers. How one idiot hired a couple more idiots
The author is extremely naieve if he never considered that candidates would Google the solution. How did they make it through the rest of the interview process, let alone years of working there, without him noticing that they actually couldn't code?
sjf··on I need to find an apartment
You didn't even mention all the straight scam advertisements you have to wade through. Next time I move I am going to hire a PA to handle searching and making viewing appointments.
sjf··on A Formal Theory of Spaghetti Code
I think the OP is referring to the kind of thing you might find in frontend code, like maintaining state for things like isVisible, isExpanded, isSelected.
sjf··on The Drunk Men I Drive Around Every Night (2020)
Yeah, I don't get the point of this article, seems like venting mostly. They obviously resent being a 'designated driver on demand' but this is basically what an Uber driver is. It is also completely their choice to drive at the time when people are leaving bars.

sjf··on How to start a successful freelance business as a software developer (2017)
Health insurance is not pro. At a big four I am paying ~$50/month for great health insurance, freelancing it was 650 from Covered California and involved repeated heated calls to every party involved.

I am one of those people. If even sip something with stevia in it I am going to be trying to get the taste out of mouth for hours. It makes me want to scrap my tongue off. It was truly the worst thing I have ever consumed. It has only happened a couple of times, now I am literally traumatized and check the ingredients on anything that is likely to have it. For context, I am not a picky eater, there are things I don't like, but this is on a whole other level.
sjf··on The emergence of heat and humidity too severe for human tolerance (2020)
Yes... But the first chapter the OP is talking about is truly horrifying, I honestly wish I hadn't read it. His other book New York 2041 also deals with climate change and is less traumatizing.
sjf··on Amazon Kindles with 3G will start to lose cellular network access in December
It's not just 10 minutes. It's every time you go to a new country, having to figure out what the local pay as go is called, finding somewhere to buy a sim, picking a plan, figuring out how to reload. Likely none of this is in your native language. If you are going to several countries consecutively it gets old. And you still can't use your own phone number. Yes, you might save ~50$ a month while travelling, but I will happily 50$ not to deal with local sims anymore. I will only do it if you need a local number for interactions with local businesses.
sjf··on Amazon Kindles with 3G will start to lose cellular network access in December
Fi has data roaming for 10$/GB, free after 6GB (speed reduced after 15GB, unless you opt-in to pay extra). This is actually the normal Fi plan- there are just no roaming charges. This is single #1 reason why I am on Fi, no more messing around with local SIMs.

sjf··on Americans are on the move, but their stuff doesn’t always follow
Sure, but everything except furniture packs down small enough to basically fit in a car and can be lifted by one person. So moving is way easier.
sjf··on Lasting immunity found after recovery from Covid-19
I am going to assume you are American by the reference to liberty. Every US immigrant is /already/ required to have eight different vaccinations and a negative TB test. They quite literally take your blood before you can become a resident.

What are suggesting, that squatting is going to make a comeback? Without the same legal protections it has in Europe, I don't see it becoming widespread.
sjf··on eBird: A crowdsourced bird sighting database
Offf, as some one coming from the UK, thrush vs redwing is not even in the difficult category... Try little brown birds of which there are many, they are basically indistinguishable, they love to hide, so notorious they even get their own wikipedia page[1]; or gulls, also many species, as well as several variations of adolescent plumage; or raptors which in the UK you pretty only see as a silhouette while they are hundreds of feet up in the air, and seen so rarely you never learn to distinguish them by their outline.

sjf··on San Francisco Apartment Rents Crater Up to 31%, Most in U.S.
The positives have to out weight the negatives of high crime, a large homeless population, high rents, small apartments, etc. Having nice parks is not unique to SF.
