Just to counter the selection bias in the answers to this question; be careful. A friend of mine took mushrooms and it triggered schizophrenia. That was 30 years ago and he never recovered.
sjclemmy··on Why Children Aren't Behaving and What We Can Do About It
Yes. And they’ve both turned out fine so far.
sjclemmy··on Why Children Aren't Behaving and What We Can Do About It
I think it’s Adults who are supposed to manage their own behaviour. Children? Not so much. This sounds like a rehash of the ‘Kids today’ perspective. Children have always been children and Adults have always struggled with their behaviour.

Adults have always romanticised their own childhood ‘it wasn’t like that in my day, I’d have never gotten away with that’ etc.

I just don’t buy it.

Good article. I’m currently using Entity Framework in .net and I’ve designed the latest bit of software I’m developing by using the balanced approach advocated here; the modelling and the RDBMS are both part of the system and have their own constraints one has to bear in mind. After working with EF there’s only one thing I couldn’t express that I can do in SQL and that’s have multiple parent keys in the parent table to represent relationships with multiple children. It took me a while to work out and I believe it is possible in .net core.

The funny thing about democracy is that if you have a fairly egalitarian society, the government actually represents the views of, and works for the people. So the statement you quote is saying that the people, through their democratic system of represention, has control of the data. Local power structures like local government tend to be quite good.

When I read things like this I start to think about the following question: Given no technology at all (i.e. after an apocalypse!), how would one go about creating a computer (as we know them). What sort of knowledge would you need? The science of these things is basically multi decades of trial and error in various disciplines. Imagine a manual that explained how to create everything from scratch!
sjclemmy··on 9,096 Stars in the Sky – Is That All?
When they say ‘visible with the naked eye’, do they mean looking straight on or with peripheral vision? Because you can sense more light in your periphery, so that might explain why it seems ‘more’ than about 4500 stars you can see.

sjclemmy··on A game of tag that’s been going for 20+ years
Similar scenario that me and my family had with some of our friends and their children. The parents of my friends had bought an annoying toy for the children of my friends - a duck that sang an annoying tune. At a New Year’s Eve party at their house our friend gave the duck to one of our children. I promptly hid it behind the TV. A few months later they found it. As they are friends we only see once or twice a year, there followed a few years of hiding it with each other when we got together for holidays etc. For example I hid it in their car one camping trip, they left it on our doorstep after they had visited one time.

Reminds me of reading the Fortean times when I was younger. Sounds like a made up or exaggerated story.

Telltale statement > “According to a local media report”. So this is a report of a report. Hmmmm.

I’m assuming this site is US based because someone from the UK and especially Lancashire would know that he meant Joe Bloggs.

sjclemmy··on Continuing frequency deviation in the Continental European Power System
Way back in the dim distant past I had a lovely Sony cube radio alarm clock. It had a switch on the back to determine the clock speed, either 50 or 60Hz. One day, unbeknowst to me, I, or someone else, moved the switch from 50 to 60Hz.

When the alarm went off the following morning, I proceeded to get ready for lectures (This clock was my only means of telling the time, there were no phones or computers in my room) and after having showered I switched on the TV (which could only receive 3 channels at the time!) where I was met with unfamiliar programmes. This confused me for a long while until I realised the time was about 40 minutes later than the clock told me. I missed my first lecture.

sjclemmy··on Save the CR100
Precisely the reason I never invested in the Sonos. I looked into it a few years ago and I just thought they were overpriced and inflexible.

I have Bluetooth speakers in my rooms and Spotify and Radio apps on my phone / tablet. Cheap and easy.

sjclemmy··on How to Work Out What to Charge Clients
> If you don't get sick with fear inside when you name your rate then it isn't high enough

Absolutely spot on. I sat in a meeting with a client and another consultant who named a price for some work. The client’s immediate response was “when can you start?”. My immediate thought was “You could get twice that”. When it came around to my turn to name a price I went in high, and spent the next half hour arguing my value.

So I would put it another way; if the client doesn’t balk at your rate and try and negotiate it down, it’s too low.

Being local to the area in West Yorkshire described in the article, I’d just like to correct the impression given in the article that Gildersome is a quaint ye olde english ‘hamlet... dominated by farmland’. It’s a suburb in the centre of a densely populated urban conurbation right next to one of the busiest motorways in Britain.

I’ll just leave that there for a bit more 80’s nostalgia.
sjclemmy··on Ursula Le Guin has died
I read “The Lathe of Heaven” when I was younger. I remember being fascinated by it, as only a young person can be.

I hadn’t really thought to look at her other books since then (which is probably about 35 years). I’ll definintely be reading “The Left Hand of Darkness” and “The Dispossessed” due to the comments on here. Thanks HN! And thank you U.K. LeGuin for introducing me to a world of ideas and possibilities.

Dark Star. Same writer as Alien I think. You can see some proto Alien ideas in there.
sjclemmy··on When Does Work Actually Get Done?
I can see that this must be an aggregation of different work patterns. I'm not a statistics person so is there some way to estimate the source 'curves' from this. I.e. I know that I'm most productive from around 7.30 am until about midday.

Money is useless without power. I think all this talk of BI in isolation hides the socio-political dimensions. The problems you describe are a result of market forces. The ability to do something about it is vested in a political system. Throwing money around won’t solve that.

1. I love ‘shop bought’ sandwiches.

2. My wife used to work a night shift at a sandwich factory when she was a student.
