sixtyj··on Show HN: I built an app that scours the internet to create a daily news briefing
Unfortunately Windows installation of Jolt and Chez is real pain. :(

So to run your app under Windows is “mission impossible”…

sixtyj··on Show HN: Smartly – Plain English to shell commands, with GNU/BSD awareness
Good for you.

Cheat sheet would be enough imho. I maintain a list of frequent commands, eg I don’t remember ffmpeg parameters…

But if you are in position to run kill command, you should know what to do :) Or make an aliases for frequent tasks.

sixtyj··on Sonnet 5.5
I have played few of them and it seems that Opus 5.5 is the first one who really made playable PacMan clone game. On mobile as well.

Could it be because the model was somehow pre-trained? If we compare it with pelicans that are still not-perfect…

sixtyj··on AI chatbots give wrong answers to financial queries 'most of the time'
I would prefer to use agent-assisted python scripts that chatbot.
sixtyj··on How do we prevent mathemathics from devolving into the Medieval Era of secrecy?
Copycats and rip-offs are really fast. Recently outbid.lol was the target.
sixtyj··on How do we prevent mathemathics from devolving into the Medieval Era of secrecy?
Maybe wise ones will return to paper.
sixtyj··on How to Write with an LLM
There is a recent PISA research that students slowly decline in understanding the long reads.

E.g. in one country, 21% of high school students do not even achieve “sufficient reading literacy”…

So the question should be - what are we going to do with this? LLM can produce texts but we as people will not be able to understand anyway…

About PISA research for example here: https://www.edweek.org/leadership/reading-ability-craters-on...

sixtyj··on How to Write with an LLM
> use them like a copyeditor rather than a ghostwriter

This is what you need to know. Seriously, after 25 years in news (writing), you realize that you need “second eyes”, not the first hands.

sixtyj··on Running a personal website is not fun anymore
There so many stuff for discussion.

Running a personal site was easy - until we started to overcomplicate it. CMS, vulnerability of it, disappearing sites that we linked in good assumption…

For those who want to use Wordpress, add wordfence plugin immediately after fresh installation.

sixtyj··on Why Does Middle-Earth Feel Deeper Than Other Fantasy Worlds?
There is a 403 forbidden error.
sixtyj··on My Chinese Internet Is Talking About AI Doom
Doomsayers are so visible now… and people are attracted by dark emotions 8 times more than good ones. So it is quite normal that “AI doom” is so chatted. If we get eventually wiped out by “aliens” (= high AGI), we won’t even know that.

Until then, it's probably better to focus on something where you or me can be useful.

sixtyj··on I'm excited about Maps and built an gamified news app around it
“Elara” is present so many times in App Store - almost nobody would write the whole name, imho renaming the app should be taken into consideration.
sixtyj··on ElevenLabs Launches Reception
Although a lot of people don’t like talking with automated call centres (press 1, if you want to continue), ElevenLabs’ service focuses on helping plumbers etc. where there aren’t so many incoming calls that it could fully employ someone.
sixtyj··on Small programming tricks
After 24 years and it is still useful. I would add Sed and Awk books as well.
sixtyj··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
Don’t catch me by word :)

Would you prefer starting with compiling a program or running a python script? Imho for beginners it is too heavy, even a python that is so hyped recently.

sixtyj··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
Difficulty is too many technologies available. So a beginner needs something/someone that teaches principles.

I have realized that simplier (boring) is better. E.g. simple html5 css combo is better instead of trying to navigate in JS frameworks.

sixtyj··on We changed our domain. Five months later, we're still almost invisible on Google
Did they ask for reindexing? Did they do redirects? What are the keywords that are searched? (“Excel” is different and much more searched than “row”.)
sixtyj··on Show HN: Chronicle – Local-first, open-source authoring software for writers
You are welcome. Happy to help.
sixtyj··on Linux from Scratch
LFS is known but it is really more a cookbook than explanatory principles.

Principles can be studied from “Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces“ book - https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~remzi/OSTEP/

Rob Love wrote the book “Linux Kernel Development”. https://rlove.org/

And then continue with reading LFS.

sixtyj··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
After almost 4 years with LLMs, if my prompt is too vague that I don’t know how to ask precisely, I use this prompt “I have this idea… {description here} How would ideal prompt look like to make idea realize?” And in second round I polish prompt myself. It usually works.
sixtyj··on Show HN: Chronicle – Local-first, open-source authoring software for writers
Fair enough. Make a splash screen that detects mobile device. “Please use app on desktop. Small screen mobile devices are not supported.” or something similar…
sixtyj··on Show HN: Chronicle – Local-first, open-source authoring software for writers
Nicely done.

Online editor seems not loading in mobile Safari browser.

Imho “vector PDF” is going to be confusing for focus group. Just “PDF” is fine.

sixtyj··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
Getting burnout from LLM-assisted coding or any other activity is here.

What exhausts and leads to burnout, is probability.

Sometimes you get so much dopamine if it goes right.

And sometimes you feel like an idiot because LLM does so many mistakes even if you think that you prompt it right.

As the pace is so fast, you change your mind’s state so frequently and quickly that it may lead to a (mild) burnout.

sixtyj··on Claude is a Contrarian
I don’t like how LLMs answer and as they are statistical machines I have found out that I need to check every text they produce. From the first sight everything seems cool. But it isn’t. :)

Exception is code that is so huge output you can’t read everything. But I have to try ponytail skill for coding that should shorten the output.

sixtyj··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
News sites can be very large - so running on Wordpress.com infrastructure can cause such amount. With cloud storage (provided by WP), additional support etc.
sixtyj··on Benchmark: CadQuery vs. OpenSCAD for agentic CAD work
A screw can't be 99.9 percent correct—it has to be 100 percent correct. Microns matter.

Claude Code: Oops, I am sorry but I was wrong.

As you say it is quicker to do it by hand. Now.

I certainly wouldn’t entrust this job to a general-purpose (universal) tool that gets it 99.9 percent right.

But a domain-specific harness? Maybe it could work.

Hardware and engineering dont tolerate hallucinations, trust-me-bro numbers, deviations.

sixtyj··on Herdr Studio
Thanks for mention they are not associated w/ Herdr.

I've banned myself from installing any more software for half a year. Otherwise, I'll never get rid of this anxiety caused by all the available options :)

sixtyj··on Show HN: The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
Typography of these LLM-generated sites is bad.

Design is a question of taste, I am not commenting it.

But yes, you are right that we get tired of these sites as they are indistinguishable.

Have anyone tried to print or switch page to browser’s reader mode? Here starts hell :)

sixtyj··on I think I hate the internet
It is quite sad, isn’t it.

Internet has become both tool of mass mind destruction and tool of joy.

High bandwidth connection, mobile phones without keyboard - this combo has changed the way people use internet.

Anxiety among kids when they can’t use phone and some of highly addictive apps (TT, WA, IG… you name it) is what concerns me more than what we do with phones (boomers, 90s kids, whatever :) And elders who are vulnerable to all scams (money, political) imaginable.

Is there a way out? IDK. Everyone has to start inside as OP did.

sixtyj··on Live map of public transport in Belgium
Nice effort. Well done.

Those who don’t bookmark but write url by memory get extra points /s

Ptm.be is for rent btw (public transport map)
