sixtyj··on We changed our domain. Five months later, we're still almost invisible on Google
Did they ask for reindexing? Did they do redirects? What are the keywords that are searched? (“Excel” is different and much more searched than “row”.)
sixtyj··on Show HN: Chronicle – Local-first, open-source authoring software for writers
You are welcome. Happy to help.
sixtyj··on Linux from Scratch
LFS is known but it is really more a cookbook than explanatory principles.

Principles can be studied from “Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces“ book - https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~remzi/OSTEP/

Rob Love wrote the book “Linux Kernel Development”. https://rlove.org/

And then continue with reading LFS.

sixtyj··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
After almost 4 years with LLMs, if my prompt is too vague that I don’t know how to ask precisely, I use this prompt “I have this idea… {description here} How would ideal prompt look like to make idea realize?” And in second round I polish prompt myself. It usually works.
sixtyj··on Show HN: Chronicle – Local-first, open-source authoring software for writers
Fair enough. Make a splash screen that detects mobile device. “Please use app on desktop. Small screen mobile devices are not supported.” or something similar…
sixtyj··on Show HN: Chronicle – Local-first, open-source authoring software for writers
Nicely done.

Online editor seems not loading in mobile Safari browser.

Imho “vector PDF” is going to be confusing for focus group. Just “PDF” is fine.

sixtyj··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
Getting burnout from LLM-assisted coding or any other activity is here.

What exhausts and leads to burnout, is probability.

Sometimes you get so much dopamine if it goes right.

And sometimes you feel like an idiot because LLM does so many mistakes even if you think that you prompt it right.

As the pace is so fast, you change your mind’s state so frequently and quickly that it may lead to a (mild) burnout.

sixtyj··on Claude is a Contrarian
I don’t like how LLMs answer and as they are statistical machines I have found out that I need to check every text they produce. From the first sight everything seems cool. But it isn’t. :)

Exception is code that is so huge output you can’t read everything. But I have to try ponytail skill for coding that should shorten the output.

sixtyj··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
News sites can be very large - so running on Wordpress.com infrastructure can cause such amount. With cloud storage (provided by WP), additional support etc.
sixtyj··on Benchmark: CadQuery vs. OpenSCAD for agentic CAD work
A screw can't be 99.9 percent correct—it has to be 100 percent correct. Microns matter.

Claude Code: Oops, I am sorry but I was wrong.

As you say it is quicker to do it by hand. Now.

I certainly wouldn’t entrust this job to a general-purpose (universal) tool that gets it 99.9 percent right.

But a domain-specific harness? Maybe it could work.

Hardware and engineering dont tolerate hallucinations, trust-me-bro numbers, deviations.

sixtyj··on Herdr Studio
Thanks for mention they are not associated w/ Herdr.

I've banned myself from installing any more software for half a year. Otherwise, I'll never get rid of this anxiety caused by all the available options :)

sixtyj··on Show HN: The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
Typography of these LLM-generated sites is bad.

Design is a question of taste, I am not commenting it.

But yes, you are right that we get tired of these sites as they are indistinguishable.

Have anyone tried to print or switch page to browser’s reader mode? Here starts hell :)

sixtyj··on I think I hate the internet
It is quite sad, isn’t it.

Internet has become both tool of mass mind destruction and tool of joy.

High bandwidth connection, mobile phones without keyboard - this combo has changed the way people use internet.

Anxiety among kids when they can’t use phone and some of highly addictive apps (TT, WA, IG… you name it) is what concerns me more than what we do with phones (boomers, 90s kids, whatever :) And elders who are vulnerable to all scams (money, political) imaginable.

Is there a way out? IDK. Everyone has to start inside as OP did.

sixtyj··on Live map of public transport in Belgium
Nice effort. Well done.

Those who don’t bookmark but write url by memory get extra points /s

Ptm.be is for rent btw (public transport map)

sixtyj··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
Who wants to fight a battle that could be a lifelong one and along the way some lose their enthusiasm for the cause…

I would rather make a lifelong campaign “don’t do drugs”… if you make national all-year-long donate-funded campaigns on every corner, social networks’ providers would need to regulate themselves as they’ll have higher churn rate.

Recent campaigns don’t work too much as they are endemic.

sixtyj··on Site Is Closed on Sundays
His house (website), his rules. They can be weird but as he doesn’t hurt anyone, it is his choice.

Well, I don’t get why I can’t discover his writings if I have still Saturday :) but it is his website not mine… so if he wants me to visit it on Monday to Saturday his time, I will. Or will not…

sixtyj··on Damn fine tiny cafe
There should be some scale for comparison just to wow people more. I think that most of us underappreciate how really tiny models are.
sixtyj··on Google: Lake Ontario/Lake America name change in the U.S. will appear in Maps
In Google Maps app (non-American version) it is already visible as “Lake Ontario (Lake America)”. Also Mapy.com has dual names.

Canadian-American border cuts the lake so dual name is obvious as Canada doesn’t have any intention to rename it.

Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) is the same situation. USA is the only country who changed the name so…

The other situation could be with cities or counties that are inside US territory.

Or take an example with Dept of War. Nobody abroad isn’t using Dept of Defense in their texts of anymore… (Btw Dept of War was since 1789 til 1949 then renamed to Dept of Defense.)

Different situation is with X. As the X is confusing for a lot of people, Twitter is added after slash to explain the situation (X/Twitter).

sixtyj··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
Yes, in ideal world what you're describing would happen. But imho the reality will be much more complicated to describe.
sixtyj··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
Law of conservation of energy can be applied here as well. So you can’t expect something else if you produce and consume more.

I don’t dispute capitalism and democracy.

Just trying to figure out what I (as person) really need.

Every weekend travelling by plane just to experience something else?

Ordering some stuff across the globe from Temu, Aliexpress just because it is cheap(er)?

Eating e.g. tuna because it is healthy that had to be transported around the globe?

Drinking wine from South Africa because I don’t like Californian? (Blind tests by Wine Spectator magazine confirm that even a sommelier doesn’t recognize cheap from expensive ones.)

Global export-import statistics is staggering… just a few: all metals, honey, fish, vegetables from Spain, avocados from Peru, almonds from California, cheaper than local milk transported across Europe , bananas from everywhere you can imagine… supply and demand - a lot of people have a much more money.

Vessel and plane trackers show so many vehicles moving around that I wonder how whales can handle this traffic.

There is chemical and industry that is real spin doctors.

(Almost) everyone wants to have house, car, cheap everything, travel everywhere. Those who can’t afford do everything to become rich.

Wealth is good. Plundering to get more money not so much. And mankind plunders like there is no tomorrow. All the CSR, circular economy etc is nice but brainwashing and stuff for distraction so people could feel better.

sixtyj··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
Decarbonization, reduction of produce (spending less), trash collection and reduction, less plastics… and hoping for the best that mankind wont mess it up more til 2050 - then the following 100 years (after 2050) shouldn’t be so hell as it seems so now…

Unfortunately we as people cannot see our older ones so future planning is not so easy…

Guns and ammo was the conclusion how to prepare for the future - in the book “10 Billion” by Stephen Emmott.

sixtyj··on More than half of adults in U.S. say they lack basic statistical understanding
“More than half” may mean anything between 50 and 100 percent. :)

But if they release headline “62% of respondents” reported no or limited statistical knowledge while only 11% regularly use statistics in daily life…

…then they would loose more than half of readers who don’t know “per cent” or % symbol (?)

I thought that OP changed the original headline but no, psu.edu really published this :)

sixtyj··on Anthropic Sees over $30T in Potential Revenue
It is pre-IPO public dance.

Today, they offered me shares in Anthropic; the IPO is supposedly scheduled for October.

sixtyj··on Anthropic Sees over $30T in Potential Revenue
Babies included.
sixtyj··on Over 170k Nonprofits Lost All Their Data. Is Microsoft to Blame?
Cloud is nice if it works. Web hosting is nice if you pay for it.

In history timeline, future archaeologists will probably see almost nothing, some books… as we are used to past centuries. But clouds, servers… gone.

BTW don’t use SSD for archiving.

sixtyj··on The Golden Rule for Becoming a Better Writer
This is awesome.

> And I’m not even a good example of proper work ethic. I have friends who write, revise, edit, and publish a novel a month. Year after year. I have friends who have published over fifty novels in their first handful of years of writing. Both of my friends who publish a book a month make millions of dollars a year, and they are among the best writers I know when it comes to craft. I can’t put their books down. They pass like Messi.

sixtyj··on The Art and Beauty of Blade Runner (2015)
> The movie even inspired Anders Ramsell to paint 3285 water colour prints, and then turn those into a remarkable short film.
sixtyj··on Four Years Ago, a Crypto Boss Went Missing. Now His Successor Has
> On June 29, two months after Zondacrypto’s website shut down, the Estonian Financial Intelligence Unit revoked the license of its parent company. Zondacrypto has been the subject of speculation in both Poland’s Parliament and its news media over whether it was a legitimate company simply upended by bad bets on crypto, or a criminal enterprise that had been set up to launder money. Bitcoin has lost half its value since October. Prosecutors in Katowice have opened an investigation into the “circumstances surrounding the establishment and operation” of Zondacrypto. Perhaps the one person who could provide answers is Mr. Kral, who has not been seen in four months. There have been several unconfirmed sightings of him, in Israel, Botswana and Dubai. Mr. Nogacki, the lawyer representing the exchanges’s clients, thinks Mr. Kral is probably in Southeast Asia. But he says he is sure of only one thing about Zondacrypto: “It was a fraud from the first day.”

sixtyj··on How to compromise your system with a job interview
It reads like a true crime story.

Bad actor had prepared the set up so precisely that Claude Code could not detect it.
