sixtram··on Bing AI can't be trusted
I've posted this into another thread as well, from Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, two months ago, on his Twitter feed:

"ChatGPT is incredibly limited, but good enough at some things to create a misleading impression of greatness. it's a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now. [...] fun creative inspiration; great! reliance for factual queries; not such a good idea." (Sam Altman)

sixtram··on Bing ChatGTP demands an apology from user for claiming it's 2023
I don't really understand the bing-microsoft release at this point. Even sam altman tweeted the following in December, which was 2 months ago. What changed since then?.

"ChatGPT is incredibly limited, but good enough at some things to create a misleading impression of greatness. it's a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now. it’s a preview of progress; we have lots of work to do on robustness and truthfulness.

fun creative inspiration; great! reliance for factual queries; not such a good idea. we will work hard to improve!" (Sam Altman)

If the CEO of OpenAI says that at the moment it's a mistake to rely on it, then why did he pushed this to into millions of hand for people who searches for factual information?

sixtram··on QuestPDF: Modern .NET library for PDF document generation
We're using Puppeteer with Chrome. It's easy to test, as basically it runs Chrome's Print to PDF. Difficult to work with headers and footers and page breaks can be tricky, but it could work for a lot of layouts.
sixtram··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
Just a tip, but print out your password, put it into an envelope, close it, and store it at your family or bank or somewhere. I do this for my 1password and google account in case something happens to me, but can also be useful if your memory fails you
sixtram··on “Telegram” is considered an invalid search query on Twitter
Freedom of speech I guess.
sixtram··on Ask HN: What weird technical scene are you fond/part of?
Stunts was one my favourite games around 93-95, I played it a lot. Another guy from Hungary.
sixtram··on Less Than 6 Hours of Sleep a Night Linked to Serious, Chronic Illness
Some possible causes from Peter Attia MD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llyQ_J4Ynf0
sixtram··on Can brown noise turn off your brain?
I usually listen to airplane noise during programming, cabin or outside propeller depending on my mood

sixtram··on What's the strangest code you've seen a senior developer write? (2019)
I wrote a lot of T-SQL daily in the past 10 years. I think 99%+ of my joins are left joins.
sixtram··on Omicron Makes Vaccine Mandates Obsolete
The last two paragraphs of the medrxiv article is the following:

"Our study contributes to emerging evidence that BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 primary vaccine protection against Omicron decreases quickly over time with booster vaccination offering a significant increase in protection.

In light of the exponential rise in Omicron cases, these findings highlight the need for massive rollout of vaccinations and booster vaccinations."

Compare this to the suggestion of WSJ's word choice of "obsolete"

sixtram··on Twitter shutting down acquired service Quill with 4 day notice and no DM export
Great info on their site: "We’d like to thank everybody who has used Quill — if you came on board during our beta, or if you just sent your first message last week. We can’t wait to show you what we’ll be working on next."

Oh yeah, I'm just waiting to jump to your new ship after this.

sixtram··on How to Take Screenshots of DOM Nodes Using Google Chrome
It's a littbe bit buggy though, in some cases the highlighted/inspected element's margin and padding are calculated incorrectly and the screenshot is cropped. Maybe I should file a bug report.
sixtram··on Quora goes permanently remote-first
Angelo says "I will not work out of the office and I will visit the office no more than once a month.", isn't the opposiite of each other?
sixtram··on An even worse anti-encryption bill than EARN IT
how does something like this affect password managers like 1-password?
sixtram··on Facebook’s Data Deals Are Under Criminal Investigation
If it's for one user then it's a breach of contract, if you do that for 10 million, that's a deliberate act of breaching all contracts and that is usually criminal.

scale matters on these issues as well.

and if you are doing it as a big utility company (e.g. banks) then you are free to go :)

sixtram··on Polar as a Personal Knowledge Repository
I've also downloaded this software and my impression is that it is far far from 95% to be an outstanding product. At least I bumped into small ui bugs the author should catched himself before a release.

At the same time I agree with his idea that a knowledge base + spaced repetition is a good combination, however outputting spaced repetition into a 3rd party app is not a good idea.

I see that burtonator is trying to push this product here every time a relevant discussion pops up, I don't have an issue with that. But I do think that this product is a long way from being useful for me in a daily setting. Right now it's nothing more than an electron wrapper around pdf.js and knowing how far I read a pdf.
