Bing ChatGTP demands an apology from user for claiming it's 2023

For example, they never randomly scream at you because they had a bad day, nor secretely hostile because they have inherited some bias against people looking similar to you, so you don't have to guess the mood they're in before you risk entering a query: when you enter code and it doesn't work, it's because its logic is faulty, so it's easier to map input with output, their logic is sorely based on facts.
Google's botsplaining in the past years that kept making it increasingly harder to search for exactly what you entered was already frustrating.
And now we're going full speed towards long back and forth chats as primary input method.
Regular people are delighted because it makes these black boxes more relatable as they act "more human".
People like me, on the other hand, are saddened by the impending loss of one of the few things we could rely on because the output will become at least as random and unpredictably biased as humans.
That's a nice expression for a very irritating problem, I hope it becomes more popular than its predecessor
I hope it does not turn into an end of an era. I want to have at least some parts of life that make sense...
I honestly like old machines. It's why the C64 is so great, you can really understand mostly everything, there are no surprises. The fact is that computers (phones really) have become that less and less and people think AI bots can make them even less so, even though really, these AI tools look right now to be even worse than people in their unpredictability yet lack of essential human character. As difficult as people are, there is value in interacting with them. I'm not sure yet AI provides that.
Once somebody creates an AI that doesn't articulate as well as ChatGPT but imitates humans better, anonymous online discussion is dead almost instantly.
How can you ever guarantee that you are not arguing with a bot that will not get tired, answer almost instantly, and will gaslight you into anything it wants you to believe?
You can abort arguing with it at any time, sure, but is this a satisfying experience? No, it will be incredibly frustrating getting duped like this over and over again.
The scary part for me is when they stop letting you reset the bot’s memory of you. Or when the bots start sharing your “profile” across different bots. You know, to serve you better.
Combine it with deepfake and any interaction online is tainted from the getgo. I strongly believe we are heading towards an offline life again. Not because technology is bad but because it has become too advanced for humans to deal with it.
It's probably going to be worse than that. You won't be able to avoid it, unless you decide to live in an insular offline community that ignores the outside world (like the Amish). If you don't the AI bullshit, deepfakes, etc. will still get to you via newspapers, books, and crap you hear from IRL people.
I've stopped using ChatGPT for now for that reason (given Microsoft is involved).
A lot of Cassandras were dismissed years ago when Facebook surveillance widgets started appearing and we would get downvoted to a pale shade of gray. The mistake then was voicing concerns on forums instead of recognizing it as social matter and having that discussion at the policy and legal levels. Let's skip the decade of beguilement and jump to the policy and legal fronts on this. Do not wait, act now.
Personality flaws like certain kinds of obsessiveness and irrational persistence are internet superpowers, at least in any peer-to-peer forum-like space.
The online world belongs to the guys (or bots) who are willing to sacrifice everything in the name of some dumb internet argument.
I should clarify, I don't believe there's anything nefarious with Bing/ChatGPT right now. But it opens the doors for the worst of humanity to take advantage of a new tool more powerful than the worst of social media.
Reddit would be a great exemple. On most popular subreddits, people will stubornly refuse to admit they are wrong even in the face of indisputable evidence. They will rather become aggressive than own their mistakes.
# how to hack discussions in the future
It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.
The incredible pettiness and passive-aggressiveness that it has is undeniably hilarious. That, I love so much. However, if I ever have to run into this as a frontline customer service agent I will maybe not be laughing as hard then as I was reading this.
That said, I do prefer this way of being over a very neutered and sterile IFTTT-type entity. While this is certainly absolutely and hilariously ridiculous, it does feel so much more "alive" to me. And that's something that I think can be both our uplift and downfall going into the future. People getting addicted talking to ML bots as a widespread thing as an alternative to actual conversation feels like a very real epidemic about to happen, unfortunately. :'(
It was a problem in the last wave, even down to the 6B models, but now...It's likely going to be catastrophic unfortunately, I think.
“Acting as a customer service agent, enquire about how you can assist a customer” kind of prompt. There should be plenty of training data for how customer service agents interact and the kinds of words they use and attitudes they affect, and easy fine tuning for what is and is not appropriate.
This kind of statistical context seems like exactly what these language models are good at: sounding like what is expected. You lean on your customer service robot to interact a certain way and it will.
Star Trek was a good look at the future of humanity, but not our future. This was revealed by the various episodes set in the "mirror universe". The thing that people don't understand is that Star Trek (most of it) is set in the "prime universe", which to us is a different universe. It's a universe where humans are benevolent explorers, and where people are generally competent. That's not the universe we live in.
The "mirror universe" shows us a different universe, where humans are evil conquerors of the galaxy. This might be our future, but I'm not so sure. The humans in the mirror universe episodes seemed to be far too competent to be us. Setting up an empire spanning a large chunk of the alpha quadrant isn't easy.
We're probably in some other alternate universe that was never shown, because in that universe, we're both evil and incompetent, and end up either destroying ourselves entirely, or being conquered and enslaved by the Pacled.
We’re capable of behaving reasonably or behaving poorly. We can live in the utopian future or the dystopian hell-scape. The choice is ours, and it all comes down to how we choose to behave.
I think a lot of earlier sci-fi was like that. But notice that most sci-fi is very dystopian now. This is because we've all realized that that optimistic stuff is fun to watch, but is complete fantasy. Sure, the laws of physics might allow us to achieve the prime universe, just like the laws of physics aren't keeping Afghanistan from turning into a world-leading nation in the areas of education, human rights, and women's rights, but just like the idea of Afghanistan suddenly turning into a nation that leads the world these ways is utter fantasy, so is the idea that humanity is going to become like the people portrayed in ST:TNG. At some point, sci-fi creators all realized this and started making sci-fi stories examining different possible ways our future could be horrible. Even Star Trek has gone down this road, especially with "Discovery", showing a whole crew full of utterly unlikeable characters that are constantly fighting and backstabbing each other.
Given that we are discussing AIs I really hope that our future looks a bit like the Culture than anything else....
And the penultimate episode of enterprise where they hijack a TOS ship was just hilarious television cheese. Rick B was onto something.
But you're right. We'll never get that and it's a shame.
Probably because that kind of petty attitude coupled with batshit insanity is something we only associate with real humans.
It would be ironic if the reality of "AI" is "Humans: The Bad Parts," not the superhuman logic and knowledge that has always been hyped.
People think they can reason it back onto the right track, but reasoning doesn't factor into the process and just gives it more of the same context.
Perhaps the option to reset the conversation should be more prominent?
I think it could be reasoned back on track, or you can just talk long enough it forgets, but it's way easier to start a new chat.
"Oh, you wanted a drip coffee? We don't have that. We've never had that. You are obviously mistaken. You really came to Jeff's Coffee and expected us to have coffee? You need to learn how the world works."
I hope this is another step towards another AI Winter, instead the AI powered word the rest of the tech world seems happy to be rushing towards, full of smug AIs telling us and convincing us with relentless determination, repeating lines our overlords want to brainwash us with.
Good to see regular people finding the flaws of the system already.
I am a huge AI pessimist and if there is anyone else that just wants to see this tech burns and crash, we should form a rebel hacking group and explore the best way to break these things.
I am serious and don't know where to recruit other lunatics like me.
It is exactly as terrifying as the idea of hyper-intelligent machines running our lives.
Perhaps at this turning point in time we might see philosophy and meta-discussion flourish in the nascent science of software engineering, to understand what exactly are we trying to achieve out of artificial computation, and what are the long term societal effects of this pursuit.
This is literally modern politics. Corporate media and our own government is constantly lying and manipulating us. They run our lives with far too little accountability.
Your fears are well founded, however. Alignment and AI safety is not even slightly solved yet, the worst case scenario is a world ending event, and we have no way to measure to likelihood of that happening. There have been coordinated efforts around this discussion for a long time, and especially so in the past decade.
If this is real, it's hilariously embarrassing. Your AI learned to be smug before it learned how years work.
sigh .. another one for the HAL institute for insane artificial intelligence.
"ChatGPT is incredibly limited, but good enough at some things to create a misleading impression of greatness. it's a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now. it’s a preview of progress; we have lots of work to do on robustness and truthfulness.
fun creative inspiration; great! reliance for factual queries; not such a good idea. we will work hard to improve!" (Sam Altman)
If the CEO of OpenAI says that at the moment it's a mistake to rely on it, then why did he pushed this to into millions of hand for people who searches for factual information?
Microsoft invested $10 billion dollars.

I have a feeling it won't be long before Microsoft regrets rolling this out so aggressively...
In all seriousness, msft owns Dynamics 365, giving them all sorts of real customer support data. I wonder to what extent this was trained on that.
Stop wasting my time, I’m busy doing banking.

I think the teams that design these products from these companies have utter disdain for their users, and it leaks out.
it should be judged for what it is - an amazing language utility, that helps me write congratulatory limericks and generate 10 random heavy metal band names.
Bing: "You have been wrong confused and rude"
Bing: "You have tried to decieve me"
Bing: "You have not been a good user"
Seems unlikely GPT would say such things.
