sivakon··on MS Teams is down
two year anniversary of this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27641010

are there any new updates on this rewrite?

sivakon··on Migrating from Warp to Axum
i really like elixir plug style API for http. trillium.rs comes very close but it’s not as popular.
sivakon··on Kagi/Orion status update: First three months
Individual Plans

Kagi Unlimited - $19/mo or $180/year ($15/mo) or $288/biennial ($12/mo) - Original Kagi experience, with unlimited searches

sivakon··on Kagi/Orion status update: First three months
$19 per month for single user without regional pricing is just insane given localised results (here in Japan) are really bad.
sivakon··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
Firefox is amazing except when working with electron based web apps. Most of the note taking apps I use only have chrome extensions. So now, I have to use both.
sivakon··on Lessons from Writing a Compiler
so what’s the quintessential book for learning compilers (practical book)!
sivakon··on China's state media buys Meta ads pushing Russia's line on war
US banned Russian media for not spreading US narrative. Are you going to lecture the world about freeze peach?
sivakon··on Try Clojure – An interactive tutorial in the browser
You can take a look at this blog post to learn more about reflection calls in Clojure. There are other posts in that blog that goes deep into Clojure high performance.

sivakon··on Using JAX in 2022
The first benchmark is wrong. Numpy random by default uses float64, and jax uses float32.

    In [9]: x = np.random.randn(10000,10000).astype('f')
    In [10]: %timeit -n5 fn(x)
623 ms ± 9.31 ms per loop (mean ± std. dev. of 7 runs, 5 loops each)
With Jax

    In [17]: %timeit -n5 jax_fn(x).block_until_ready()
98.4 ms ± 1.55 ms per loop (mean ± std. dev. of 7 runs, 5 loops each)
It's still 6x improvement but not as large that the article claims. I am on the latest Intel Mac
sivakon··on Sometimes, rewriting in another language works
Waiting for Octavian to replace https://github.com/JuliaLang/julia/blob/master/stdlib/Linear...
sivakon··on Julia frameworks to create desktop GUIs and web apps
I had a very similar experience when I deployed a microservice on k8s cluster. I wish there was vendoring, better testing frameworks, database drivers (not ODBC), proper async framework, precompilation for faster startup. Serverless workloads for pretty much impossible in Julia.
sivakon··on My productivity app for the past 12 years has been a single .txt file (2020)
I actually used it continuously for six months. Once the data and the size of the graph increases, it gets very slow, even text editing gets unresponsive. The features are good, but it will get slow and taking notes feel sluggish
sivakon··on PyTorch: Where we are headed and why it looks a lot like Julia (but not exactly)
Clojure has a high performance data frame library that leverages new JVM vector API and high quality apache arrow protocol.

sivakon··on Understanding Kafka with Factorio (2019)
In our org, all the website events are pushed into Kafka and it enabled all the teams to develop real-time event driven applications using these events without needing any access to website database or any infra that handles the main website. It’s truly a blessing in large organisations.
sivakon··on What's bad about Julia?
One major gripe I have is the infamous "TTFP"(Time to First Plot) problem is more or less solved, these improvements haven't manifested in any other areas.

Here is time to first read csv problem. I am on newest Intel Macbook Pro

  cat read_csv.jl
  using CSV
  using DataFrames
  df = CSV.read("hello.csv", DataFrame)
  println(df)

  cat hello.csv
  col1,col2,col3
  1,2,3
  4,5,6

  time julia read_csv.jl

  julia read_csv.jl 10.48s user 0.37s system 102% cpu 10.609 total
sivakon··on Apache Heron: A realtime, distributed, fault-tolerant stream processing engine
You forgot gearpump

sivakon··on EleutherAI One Year Retrospective
GPT-J is trained on TPU VM generously offered by Google as part of their TPU research cloud. It’s a small version true but the results are almost on par with reported GPT-3

sivakon··on Copilot regurgitating Quake code, including sweary comments
Copilot will most likely be useful as a Stackoverflow indexer or a better GitHub search. Developer speed can become faster because this eliminates some time spent on GitHub and SO. I don’t think it’s anymore useful than that.
sivakon··on First Look: macOS Monterey Public Beta
How does WebAuthn and iCloud Keychain work together? Sadly no mention of it in the article.
sivakon··on Microsoft Teams 2 will use half the memory, dropping Electron for Edge Webview2
Word/Excel run natively on Windows and MacOS. Also have a web client for them. How does that justify using web technologies for cross platform development?
sivakon··on Microsoft Teams 2 will use half the memory, dropping Electron for Edge Webview2
The fact that they market Xamarin/MAUI as cross platform and Blazer for web, and not use any of their tech to build a cross platform native/web app is laughable.
sivakon··on Erlang/OTP 24 highlights
I just ran programs from computer language benchmarks with OTP24. Every program ran considerably faster almost 30% speed up.
sivakon··on We Built Our Own DNS Infrastructure
How is this different from glitch.me? I am genuinely curious. Looks like a static Next.js app. I am a regular replit user, I want to know if the support of node/deno is complete (it hasn't been really responsive so far).
sivakon··on Jack Ma Is Missing
A lot of readers here don’t live in US
sivakon··on CD Projekt Conference Call with the Management Board [pdf] (Dec 14)
These were the expectations set by CDPR and their marketing team. Open world mechanics are a joke in this game. Pedestrians look same. Driving mechanics are janky.
sivakon··on GitHub Warns Users Reposting YouTube-DL They Could Be Banned
Just want to understand, if I change the repo name to something else but does the same job, will that trigger RIAA?
sivakon··on Show HN: Collected Notes – A note-taking blogging app I made
How is this different from private/public tumblr blogs and micro.blog?
sivakon··on Overview of Python dependency management tools
The last time I tried poetry, it had dependency problems. The maintainers acknowledged it and resolved it with a patch, but somehow it was not working. This was at poetry 1.0.0b3
sivakon··on Featherweight Go
Do you have any workable example? All the examples I tried haven’t worked on latest bazel version.
sivakon··on Show HN: Bear – Minimal blogging platform
You can visit https://upmath.me/ and on the preview side, choose `md`. You can get latex equation as SVG URL hosted on s2cms.ru CDN. It's pretty fast and supports any website that supports markdown+images without the need for MathJax or Katex. Example post here https://katr.bearblog.dev/latex/
