sirpilade··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Aeneid, it’s been a while since my school years
sirpilade··on Nesbox: A fast MicroVM with GPU sharing
Is there anything similar for sharing cuda computing capabilities?
sirpilade··on TiddlyWiki v5.4.0
IMHO, it's dependability. It's easy and flexible because I can set it up as a web service or use it offline. For the average reader of HN, it takes probably 10 min to set it as web service with npm and reverse proxy + SSL and then you can use it from any device. With a little CSS it can be beautiful and with plugins you can have a connection graph similar to Obisidian. Once it runs, then I don't need to worry about updating it every other hour because of bug fixes and compatibility breaks. And I know it will be there for the next 20+ years.
sirpilade··on The Claude Code Leak
As a more general comment, I hope we’ll stop trying to discriminate whether a certain text was or not written/polished/extended by AI and focus more on content and author’s responsibility for what they do or do not say with that text.
sirpilade··on Show HN: Kula – Lightweight, self-contained Linux server monitoring tool
I think that having the « How it works » section in the README makes the aim of the project a lot easier to understand
sirpilade··on Google Safe Browsing missed 84% of confirmed phishing sites
Pun aside, I cannot fully trust a centralized URL checker on a remote server that I don’t own, even if they guarantee that my privacy is safe
sirpilade··on Google Safe Browsing missed 84% of confirmed phishing sites
But hits 100% of browsing tracking
sirpilade··on How to take a photo with scotch tape (lensless imaging) [video]

Altough I’m not an economist, it seems that the events shown in the graph coincide with the suspension of dollar - gold convertibility until then regulated by Bretton Woods monetary system

I’m curious to know what would be your top reading suggestions for learning CL
sirpilade··on Londoners will soon see drones ferrying blood between hospitals
Good to hear, although not a first. For example, this has been happening in Lugano, Switzerland since 2017 [1]. And I guess in other places too

sirpilade··on Feynman: I am burned out and I'll never accomplish anything (1985)
well, I meant unmindful as in trying to forget that to get to the point where you stand today you had to pass past some doors that you decided not to open. A child-like attitude towards discovery, free from preconceptions. Then, after discovery, we should ground ourselves and leverage from our adult experience. My own experience with great thinkers I knew (some Nobel-prize level) is that we need to go from moments of imagination to moments of reality check many times. Kind of the same line as Feynman’s experience
sirpilade··on Fluorite lenses: Corrective capabilities beyond ordinary optical glass
Yes the explanation is diffraction. As light passes through a lens, diffraction acts in similar way as a light through a small pinhole. Incidentally, pinholes and apertures are low pass filters.

sirpilade··on Feynman: I am burned out and I'll never accomplish anything (1985)
I totally agree with your comment. I should add that, as the Romans used to say quite some time ago, 'Audentes fortuna juvat' (fortune favors the bold). With this I mean to say that some more optimistic and unmindful attitude usually helps in finding those doors, or at least in forgetting the ones that did not eventually open.

sirpilade··on Age of Invention: How the Dutch Did It Better
I agree and actually think that countries that will regulate first the use of these tools will have and advantage. Switzerland is setting up many cryptofriendly places (Zug, Lugano) where Btc and Tether are used for small payments and cashback points, and Hong Kong is also planning next moves in this direction. Ethiopia is planning to use blockchain for education records and might expand its use in other directions. All these applications require identification and are a step towards regulation

sirpilade··on Age of Invention: How the Dutch Did It Better
we might see a similar situation with cryptocurrency-friendly countries in the near future
sirpilade··on Ask HN: Do academics still use printers?
Not anymore, because I find that the iOS version of Zotero covers most of the use cases in the comments

But I still print when I want to show stuff to other people, or for lab bench protocols

sirpilade··on Ask HN: Examples of good technical writing?
Learning Perl by Randal Schwartz[1] was the funniest programming book I ever read. I must give credit to this book if I enjoyed so much programming perl

sirpilade··on Ethereum Isn't Fun Anymore
I think they're making good, solid progress. They should be rolling smart contracts with Gougen in Q2 this year, and indications so far are that they should be on time

It is also a matter of helping society as a whole: by vaccinating you take the very small risk of having side effects (so far 400k were involved in phase III trials worldwide), while having the huge benefit for society that you are really helping the most fragile. And many times you may not realize that they are near us: for example people with low immune defenses because of diseases that you will never know about. I will definitely take it as soon as available.
