sirpenguin··on How the United States Can Win the Battery Race
I'm curious what HN folks think about the technology and business claims made in the article. Are there really better battery technologies on the cusp of commercialization? How should the government decide which of those to fund (going by the author's proposal)? Obviously this article is on some level a pitch for the author's company's technology but why solid state and not say, sodium ion?
sirpenguin··on The DDoS attack of academic bullshit
Very clever to write an article that is the very thing that it criticizes, the entryway into a certain "marketing funnel."

What I got out is this: "Good information is scarce and strong research skills are therefore increasingly valuable. Guess what, we (my consulting firm) specialize in giving just the kind of actionable advice you need."

Appropriate for the author's image to be of the ourobouros.

More charitably though, it's fine for the market to offer solutions to this problem, as long as it's not conflated with the space for "serious leisure" that mere curious nerds subsist on in all ages.

Leisure is by definition an end in itself. It just happens that without it people and societies alike cease to function well. What can we do to expand the space for serious but aimless thinking in this age?

sirpenguin··on Ask HN: How should organize and back up 23 TiB of personal files?
I use borg backup, one copy goes to a local backup disk (the cheapest brand-name 4tb USB external drive I could find) for quick recoveries, another goes to amazon glacier for catastrophic situations. Cost is something like $3 a month for just shy of 4TB of data, photos and videos that I've taken myself being a large part of that.

I would love to know if anyone considers printed albums, whether of photos, textual data or some other elaborate system involving QR codes or what have you, to be part of their strategy.
