sirjaz··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
I'd say Android is already worse. It uses more ram and resources to run smoothly than Windows does. Especially now that Microsoft is actively trying to speed up Windows 11 and make it use less resources.
sirjaz··on Show HN: I built self-hosted deployment automation tool for Windows and IIS
Kestrel is more performant under Windows than Linux, but the container support isn't there

sirjaz··on Show HN: AdaShape-3D modeler for intuitive 3D printing parts / Windows 11
Great job, these are the apps we need to see. Native Windows apps.
sirjaz··on Microsoft hasn't had a coherent GUI strategy since Petzold
The biggest issue in my opinion is that Microsoft is chasing web devs. XAML is pita, just like css and html markup. They need to pick a lane and just use it. Allow other frameworks access to the default low level api such as Win32, but document it to the same level as Google does on Android and Apple with SwiftUI
sirjaz··on Microsoft hasn't had a coherent GUI strategy since Petzold
It's that Nadella doesn't really care about Windows, even though the kernel is the root of Azure. In addition, all the newer gui frameworks abandoned RAD interface. That is what made and still does make Winforms and WPF popular.
sirjaz··on Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at kernel with massive speed gains
It's a Windows container. It runs the NT kernel and a few minimal other things. The closest would be the Nano Server container
sirjaz··on Western carmakers' retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance
But what about Hydrogen? Many ICE companies would be better to focus on that. It would allow legacy vehicles to stay on the road, and fix the range anxiety in places like the US which is way bigger than all of the EU and bigger than the populated parts of China.
sirjaz··on Windows 11's Patch Tuesday nightmare gets worse
At this point Microsoft needs to go back to service packs and a three year OS version cycle. Rapid development doesn't seem to be working.
sirjaz··on Wine-Staging 11.1 Adds Patches for Enabling Recent Photoshop Versions on Linux
Also, to add the current CEO doesn't care about the OS. All he cares about is the stock price, and his AI mistake.
sirjaz··on Handy – Free open source speech-to-text app
This is great, and I love that this is not another webapp
sirjaz··on Show HN: Prism.Tools – Free and privacy-focused developer utilities
This would be a great tool if it was a local tool that could run in a tui or as a desktop app ala devtoys on Windows
sirjaz··on Linux is good now
If Microsoft could get their heads out of their rears, they could potentially get back to a better OS for gaming. The hybrid kernel Dave Cutler designed is in many ways still better than the Linux kernel. It's the userland that is the issue with Windows 11. Look just by enabling true nvme support you close the gap between Linux and Windows performance wise.
sirjaz··on Linux is good now
Enterprise and ltsc have none of the nagware or tracking. Ai is still there though
sirjaz··on Show HN: 22 GB of Hacker News in SQLite
This would be awesome as a cross platform app.
sirjaz··on I can't upgrade to Windows 11, now leave me alone
Then why is Google killing the ChromeOS/Chromebook? Also Windows is increasing in its share again. Maybe that is due to companies that want AI in there systems.
sirjaz··on I can't upgrade to Windows 11, now leave me alone
Thank the web for that. We have lost more control of our devices and our privacy; the more we depend on the web and SaaS. We need to get back to writing native software, be it for Linux, FreeBSD, MacOS, or Windows. We need to make the local device the priority.
sirjaz··on The state of Schleswig-Holstein is consistently relying on open source
If you have pro or enterprise you can still setup a local account. It is home edition that is the issue
sirjaz··on Show HN: Onlyrecipe 2.0 – I added all features HN requested – 4 years later
I would be amazing if you released this as a Windows app. I would love to use it on my surface which sits in the kitchen.
sirjaz··on Zenroom – No-code cryptographic virtual machine
There is no C# support, they need to fix this.
sirjaz··on People keep flocking to Linux, not just to escape Windows
Funny a the stats he points to show a smaller number of devices being recorded each time. So of course the percentage would go up. There are still more Windows devices in active use compared to all MacOS/iOS devices.
sirjaz··on Galaxy XR: The first Android XR headset
Microsoft dropped the Hololens and it was in this price range with a much better product. So I have a feeling this will be a google glass type item

Isn't this similar to WSL-G on Windows to run Linux graphic apps.
sirjaz··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
We as tech enthusiasts killed a viable 3rd option. For all its warts Microsoft created a great mobile os, but we killed it. If we could convince them to bring it back to be the true alternative to the existing duopoly in might fix these issues.
