sirfz··on Ask HN: How to pivot to a Machine Learning engineer?
Yes, I believe you do need to have a good math understanding to understand why a model is behaving the way it is and develop intuition into where the problem might be but that comes with experience. If you're looking into ML research then absolutely you need to learn the math but if you intend to support ML as a programmer then there's plenty of space for you to do so
sirfz··on Ask HN: How to pivot to a Machine Learning engineer?
I transitioned to what's now referred to as ML engineering 11 years ago, as a programmer I started working on scripts doing all sorts of ETL (in Python - was my intro to the language) and handled datasets saving and loading for training. I managed models serving (we were using Theano at the time) in prod via REST APIs. Also worked (and still do) on writing model architectures with DL experts and I can say I still don't have solid understanding of the maths but I sure know how to manipulate matrices and write ML layers/models when working with an expert.

There are other aspects to the job (like dispatching experiments) but the point is that I was able to bring value in all of this as a programmer without requiring any new skills apart from the natural learning experience that one has to go through in any discipline. I think you can surely transition as long as your job requires it.

sirfz··on DuckDB Isn't Just Fast
In general DuckDB is great but I had similar out-of-memory issues specifically when using "distinct on" and "unnest". In such cases I usually delegate some queries to chdb / clickhouse-local instead.

DuckDB has been evolving nicely, I especially like their SQL dialect (things like list(column1 order by column2), columns regex / replace / etc) and trust they'll eventually resolve the memory issues (hopefully).

sirfz··on Show HN: A fast HNSW implementation in Rust
I recently tried out lancedb and it looks great. Allows to directly index vectors into disk and include meta data with them as well
sirfz··on A bird's eye view of Polars
That just slices rows but something like df[cols] for example would be nice (and is more intuitive), the __slice__ api in python is quiet powerful and I wish polars would take more advantage of it
sirfz··on A bird's eye view of Polars
Nowadays I'm mostly using duckdb/chdb to process/transform data. I use polars mainly to view results output by duckdb/chdb. I like polars and I always use it over pandas but I must say that pandas slicing is certainly missed (or just ability to utilize slicing, not necessarily like pandas)
sirfz··on Mojo is now available on Mac
No It's vs a pure python implementation[1]

sirfz··on A proto-pizza emerges from a fresco on a Pompeii wall
Indeed, lahmacun (lahmajoon) clearly comes from Arabic "lahm b ajin" (meat with bread) which is just another variation of the Mankoushe (منقوشة) - a flat bread with different toppings such as thyme, cheese and the famous meat variation.

sirfz··on Unofficial firmware upgrade for Dyson V6/V7 vacuum battery management system
I got a Black & Decker cordless vacuum and it works great. Great battery (~60-90m runtime on full charge) which is also easily swappable (same batteries as their drills) with decent suction, build quality feels good too. It's almost 3x cheaper than the Dyson so really great value
sirfz··on Tcl the Misunderstood (2006)
TCL was my entry into coding back when I was a teenager, haven't touched it in over 12 years or so but I'll always fondly remember it. The title of this post is very familiar to me, I'm sure I read it back when it was published but its cool to now know it was written by the creator of redis which I now use extensively
sirfz··on AWS us-east-1 outage
AWS ec2 API requests are failing and ECR also seems to be down (error 500 on pull)
sirfz··on The GIL and its effects on Python multithreading
Haven't checked the full series yet but this GIL article is very nicely written and insightful. Thank you
sirfz··on 1800s Astronomical Drawings vs. NASA Images (2016)
Click on the link under the picture to view the intended photo. I'm still interested how this error happened tho
sirfz··on Why Russians do not smile (2002)
"Pochemu" is closer to "why" than "how", it asks why something happened regardless of how.

"zachem" is closer to "what for".

sirfz··on High-performance speech recognition with no supervision at all
In the title image, the Arabic word "ahlan" (welcome) is spelled correctly but left to right instead of right to left (should look like this: أهلا)
sirfz··on Italian towns will pay you to work remotely
Thanks for the insight, I should've been more specific. I'm asking for non American/western passport holders
sirfz··on Italian towns will pay you to work remotely
Article doesn't mention this, I wonder if this includes non-European visa-requiring visitors, if yes then do they offer residency?
sirfz··on Show HN: IAvisa – Explore visa requirements worldwide
Yep, also OP's site doesn't seem to hold correct information. For example Belarus->Argentina visa is not required.
sirfz··on Reinventing Firefox for Android
But why would market share matter if the browser is more than capable of handling whatever content a site serves. I don't see this relevant to the issue.

I think the fact that Firefox doesn't announce the device's model in its UA could be a factor so some sites fall back to their lower quality version by default but it sucks that we can't force the higher quality version.

sirfz··on Reinventing Firefox for Android
Does anyone suffer from degrading image/video quality on some websites while using Firefox Android? I have this issue with Facebook. I don't want the Facebook app installed on my phone (mostly to block notifications and for privacy reasons) so I access FB via Firefox but images look terrible and every video I click opens in a separate tab instead of in-page (at least I can download it tho).

Only solution I have is using user-agent switcher to change my UA to either Chrome or Firefox for iOS (which is what I picked to keep Firefox in my UA) but this breaks other stuff on some websites.

Question is, how to get Facebook and other sites to stop serving shit quality to Firefox users? How is this fair?

sirfz··on Krisp.ai – Mute background noise during your calls
This looks nice, I hope we can get a Linux version too
sirfz··on IRC.com Bought by London Trust Media, Pledges an IRC Revival
LOL I used to go to network cafes to be able to connect before we finally had cable internet at our place (dialup was too expensive). Since you mentioned "idle on IRC at all times", me and a friend of mine (who I still work with to this day!) used to sell shell boxes for people to install PsyBNC and Eggdrops on. First brush with business, those were the days haha
sirfz··on IRC.com Bought by London Trust Media, Pledges an IRC Revival
One of my greatest achievements back then was allprotection.tcl[1] (over 2000+ lines of spaghetti) LOL but I have no doubt that TCL scripting taught me a lot and gave me a huge advantage during my studies!

I'm sure you enjoyed what you were doing ;)

sirfz··on IRC.com Bought by London Trust Media, Pledges an IRC Revival
I can fairly say that it was IRC that introduced me to the coding world (where I learned to code TCL scripts for Eggdrops) when I was in high school and made me decide to switch my major to Computer Science after my first semester as a Graphic Design student (which I only chose because my brother had switched off Internet access from me for a few months which affected my judgment apparently)

sirfz··on Belarus to create a regulatory environment for circulation of cryptocurrencies
That's funny, although Trump doesn't drink but this kinda makes sense
sirfz··on Theano and the Future of PyMC
Our team migrated from Theano to Tensorflow more than a year ago and the transition was pretty natural as both frameworks share very similar design philosophies. I never used PyMC myself, but Tensorflow seems like the natural replacement in this case.
sirfz··on Let's Remove the Global Interpreter Lock
pd.HDFStore is a good option for storing large DataFrames and it has some power querying capabilities.
sirfz··on uBlock Origin Maintainer on Chrome vs. Firefox WebExtensions
I use Firefox Mobile as well but to be fair extension-support is flakey. A lot of times I install an extension that doesn't work and nothing indicates whether it does or doesn't. Also the extensions store doesn't indicate whether and extension is mobile friendly or not.
