siproprio··on PEP 505 – None-aware operators (2015)
They rejected the exception aware operator, it would’ve been the most useful application.
siproprio··on Ask HN: What PDF viewer do you use?
PDF-XChange Editor, on Windows.

They’re really good, and the free version works very well for annotations and reading.

I only discovered this software because the company I work for adopted it as the pdf solution company wide.

siproprio··on Vivaldi Mail 1.0: Email client built into the browser
Last time I tried to use vivaldi for day to day browsing, I gave up because it was too slow. Have they fixed this?
siproprio··on Ask HN: Which are your favorite developer docs?
Matlab:

siproprio··on Ask HN: Why are there no good note taking apps
Try UpNote.

siproprio··on Safari is crippling the mobile market, and we never even noticed
This will be awful because then all the social media apps will start to bundle their own browsers, without ad blocking!
siproprio··on Obsidian Dataview: Turn Obsidian Vault into a database you can query from
Next we’ll do email!
siproprio··on Netflix lays off about 150 employees
Yep, most Netflix shows are pretty bad, the movies even worse, and the catalog outside the US is 10x smaller.

Absolutely not worth paying for it unless sharing with a couple of friends IMHO.

siproprio··on Netflix loses subscribers for the first time in 10+ years
Yeah, but Netflix movies really suck and at least in Brazil and other countries, their library is getting increasingly smaller, which causes the crappy originals to dominate. I mean, last month they were featuring a movie about f-cking hailstorms as the main attraction!
siproprio··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
Well, to be honest, reading those comments, everything seems to fit together!

On my first internship, it seems like all my bosses were like this!

Now, I don't know if those are the norm, or if I just had bad luck and worked at a shitty place for my first internship!

But yeah, I constantly feel like an imposter.

siproprio··on Ask HN: How to optimize your career for happiness?
I'm currently 27, and I would really like to know where are those people who make 120k on a 40h/week job working, and how do I get there!
siproprio··on Ask HN: Have you accepted the TOS that give FB access to your WhatsApp data?
I don't remember having accepted it!

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if that data was shared anyway before I'd clicked, and that in the end, Facebook only pretended having given user's the choice!

And if Facebook provided me the choice, I would happily revoke my consent.

siproprio··on My Bose QC-35 II headphones burst into flames and left me with chemical burns
Certain stories, I think, are very clear "bring your lawyer with you" situations!
siproprio··on Microsoft’s new Windows prompts try to stop people downloading Chrome
yeah, but instead of removing those banners and supporting ad-blocking and filtering, microsoft chooses to add more pop-ups and banners.

indeed this is the added trust of msft.

siproprio··on New Software Engineer Rejected 357 Times Before Receiving a Job Offer
"global labor pool that typically works way harder than we do for much less money"

yes, we do, and we love the USA.

siproprio··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
Specifically for search, my experience today when I search something on google:

- captcha (because vpn)

- spam results (based on location, my location was never very good for technical content)

- paywalls

- no pictures cause photos is now paid (i've signed up for unlimited forever)

And on bing basically I get shopping coupons, games and, well, and microsoft's "anything's valid, except customer sat" approach.

siproprio··on Fleet, a Lightweight IDE from JetBrains
omg I'm in love with jetbrains now
siproprio··on Microsoft pushes ahead with controversial ‘buy now, pay later’ feature for Edge
Chrome doesn't do this.
siproprio··on Microsoft pushes ahead with controversial ‘buy now, pay later’ feature for Edge
Yeah, I briefly fell for msft not being evil.

Not only edge is not free because I paid for windows, it's also slower and much more user hostile and mindfulness hostile than Google.

Say what you want about Chrome engineers, but they wouldn't go to this low.

siproprio··on 1Password 8 for Windows is here
It's awful, it feels like an electron app. Uses three times more memory, awful scaling bugs, and everything is stuck inside one single app window.

Plus, the blog screenshots are literally fake: https://blog.1password.com/posts/2021/opw8-launch/light-hero...

siproprio··on What's the Future of IDEs?
In the future all IDE's will be using Comic Sans as their default font.
siproprio··on Next Windows 11 update brings back Clippy, along with other redesigned emoji
That's great they're bringing back the most annoying feature that ever existed.

Have they fixed the typing bug that's caused by the broken-hacky "text correction" implementation?

Randomly when I'm typing the cursor will shift left in the middle of typing.

siproprio··on Is Microsoft Stealing People’s Bookmarks?
That page is so awful it crashed on my machine.
siproprio··on Is Microsoft Stealing People’s Bookmarks?
Hint hint hint: this is not about bookmarks, it's about privacy and respecting user's choice.

It happened to me too. And then they used this data to show me creepy ads.

siproprio··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
They also purposefully changed some settings in my machine to suck even more of my data.

The more time I spend on edge, the more I hate microsoft.

siproprio··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
Vivaldi is slow.
siproprio··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
There's nothing good happening on edge. The only thing happening are those sorts of things.

It's also funny how for example they still manage to get basic things wrong, like a smooth and instantaneous gui, good design (made to improve user experience, rather than cross-selling), etc.

siproprio··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
God for some reason I just hate these "features" that are designed to push Bing and Ads.

I still remember they had to kill cortana because the implementation was universally hated by people.

siproprio··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
Unfortunately, if they exist, those optimizations are not open source.
siproprio··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
They don't need any promotion. They'll just achieve domination through bundling edge with windows and making it impossible to switch.

I used to have a more positive version of microsoft up until the point they started flexing their evil muscles to push low quality products into technically unsophisticated users. Edge+Bing+Office+Windows feeding on each other is the greatest example right now.

Gladly we acted as quickly as possible where I worked to leave github when they announced the msft acquisition, so at least my part is covered.
