sippingabonedry··on Tennessee inmate still alive after being administered two lethal injections
> inhumane

There's a lot of bad and conflicting info in the news right now, but it seems a newer "kinder, gentler" injection protocol may have been used here, which eliminates two additional drugs typically used.

The problem with that is it clearly doesn't work. In an effort to make it as comfy as possible, they succeeded in turning it into Dr. Evil's malfunctioning death chamber.

I interpreted it as an implication that it should be viewed as a lesser crime due to the perpetrator's age. At 18 you can:

• Vote

• Fight in the military

• Act in pornography

• Rent a car in MI, NY, QC

• Many other adult things

The crime perpetrated was premeditated and particularly demonic. It's a far cry from shoplifting a Snickers bar.

> is kind of upsetting

Bringing a chunk of the victim's skull to school to show your friends how good you are at murdering was probably pretty upsetting to a few people, like the victim's family and friends.

> for something they did when they were eighteen really bothers me

She lured a classmate into the woods, slit her throat with a box cutter after torturing her for half an hour, bashed her skull open with a rock for good measure, then brought a piece of her skull to school the next day.

> I was even more of an idiot then than I am now

Do you think the above should be chalked up as normal childhood indiscretion?

sippingabonedry··on California bans child marriage, a practice still legal in 32 US states
You can always divorce someone or otherwise dissolve the marriage.

It's hard to reattach body parts once they've been removed.

One is permanently life-altering, while the other amounts to paperwork.

sippingabonedry··on California bans child marriage, a practice still legal in 32 US states
If you immigrate to the US, there is an expectation you leave any barbaric (by American standards) practices home.

For example, dog meat is still legal in South Korea (until 2027), but trying that here would not be acceptable nor would any reasonable person think it's discrimination.

Yikes.

Bizarrely, the map for cousin marriage is roughly the inverse of the age map, with it being permitted on most of the East coast, CA, CO, NM, AK, & HI.

I hate to upend your "lulz red states" Reddit zinger, but the fact is the law doesn't take effect until January 2027, so until such time there is NO age limit in California.

The limit is 16 in Colorado and Illinois, 15 in Hawaii, and no limit in New Mexico.

Might want to update your notes.

Volkswagen had €322 billion in revenue last year and was literally in every way founded by the Nazi party.

Is that even possible in modern EVs? Without breaking critical functions like maps, etc.

sippingabonedry··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
Of course. It's a ridiculous notion yet that hasn't stopped anyone from repeating it constantly.

More than a few times my mechanic has found something pending failure (like a leak) during regularly scheduled ICE maintenance and alerted me to keep an eye on it.

sippingabonedry··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
I'm reminded nearly every other day that EVs need no maintenance and should never see the inside of a mechanic's garage.

From personal experience, I have found projects like this to be a waste of time in the long run.

Something WILL break (at the worst possible time) which you cannot fix, or upgrade, etc.

The device will end up in the same closet with the other e-waste streamer boxes. You won't get your time back.

Remember these were designed with a limited life in mind, by people that were equipped with all the documentation, SDKs, BSP, etc. You'll always be fighting an uphill battle.

Eventually you realize you're spending closer to 100% of your time fixing problems rather than watching content.

If you set partisan politics aside for 90 seconds, you might realize that regardless of the administration publicly in charge, the government is always doing stuff behind closed doors that your brain could not even begin to comprehend how they pull it off.

Stories like this hilariously implausible "grizzled old man casually leaks secret program to Aviation Week" is like throwing a cat a ball of yarn.

I threw some legitimate questions at it today and got helpful answers in response.

Someone mentioned a comparison to Obama's healthcare.gov rollout; that site had a 1% success rate during the first week it went live so it's safe to assume there have been some lessons learned since then.

sippingabonedry··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
> So what do you think it is that makes Reddit feel icky, versus the forums we've had in days of yore?

Two things.

1. Voting: It changes the incentives for posting a comment. It becomes a popularity contest where people go after easy points by posting low quality but popular comments, rather than focusing on quality discussion. Similarly, quality posts are suppressed if they are unpopular. This behavior is killing what's left of this site too, but that's a discussion for another time.

Ordering posts chronologically removes this manipulation. Real life discussions are not threaded, and aren't voted upon.

2. Forums required investment by parties sufficiently dedicated to a topic: you need hosting, administration; this costs money. Reddit on the other hand inverts the equation. It incentivizes the worst of the worst people on the Internet (penniless losers with unlimited free time) to usurp power and build fiefdoms. In a way Reddit exploits them because they do their dirty work for free. This is who ends up controlling subreddits.

sippingabonedry··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Too many subreddits still have minimum karma or account age requirements. Most of those are ruled by tyrant moderators so you're not missing much, but it's made the site largely useless. I estimate 60% of discussions on Reddit are fake or fabricated on some level.

Can't post honest questions anymore without posting obviously phony pandering banter first to increase your karma. What's worse, it promotes the bad behaviors the bots are actually good it.

Bring back forums.

> is more than enough

This attitude of dictating others' car needs for them is one of the biggest hindrances to EV adoption and is also why rolling back CAFE regulations is going to be more popular than you think it is.

The general public doesn't like being told what to do.

sippingabonedry··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
That's fair; but articles like this tend to view reality as black or white, rather than the grey area it is.
sippingabonedry··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
Not in rural Europe it isn't.

There is still no widespread charging infra. Oh sure, there are chargers. If you're lucky and your town is on a state highway there might be one or two chargers in the entire town — their purpose being so visitors don't become stranded.

Outside of cities, they are not there in sufficient quantity for widespread adoption.

The apartment problem has not been solved either, and people do not have the time in their lives to dedicate to charging at a shared public charger.

Europe still loves its compact manual transmission cars; but what we may see is a transition away from diesel to petrol vehicles strictly for cost reasons.
