sippingabonedry··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
We had PHEVs that could do this <checks notes> ten years ago. All whilst looking like and driving like normal cars and not iPads on wheels.

If all you need (and all you're capable of charging) is 35mi of range, buying an EV is incredibly stupid, and you are continually placing yourself at risk of running out of battery. If the threat of an unscheduled errand would leave you stranded, you bought the wrong car.

EVs are impractical unless all (frequently unsaid) prerequisites are met.

The one time I observed an ex-con post here, someone quickly doxxed him, the mob declared him evil, and quickly flagged all his posts and comments.

They don't want cruelty, just their livelihoods taken away.

You left a few items off the list, for instance:

- We can't beat off to porn anymore without a VPN, because our nanny government has blocked it.

- Our government sends hilarious fines to foreign websites when it disapproves of their moderation.

But Ring cameras all over the place to deter the undesirables from stealing Tenga eggs off doorsteps are ok I assume?

It's objectively hilarious that the useful idiots so virulently angry about Flock look like the type of people that don't drive a car, so it makes you wonder what the fuss about ALPRs is and how it affects them.

If Flock was used to enforce congestion pricing in the cities they ride bikes in, they would all be for it.

sippingabonedry··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
I've seen it.

People flaunting their credentials in multiple languages, then sweating bullets and apologizing profusely when they see

  int t = 4;
You can either code or you can't; the language is merely a vehicle.
sippingabonedry··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
> Perhaps firing expertise

The expertise that told them to buy PeopleSoft years ago, or do you actually believe the FBI home-rolled its own HRMS in the last year?

Are they related to the expertise that was supposed to lead to the immediate, irreparable offlining of Twitter after they were all fired?

Maybe they should have spent the money used to buy its stupid name from a band on additional testing instead.
sippingabonedry··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
Smart people understand pragmatism, which means not throwing the baby out with the bath water in the name of ill thought-out feel-good measures.
sippingabonedry··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
Are you saying China is doing whatever it needs to do to satisfy its power needs, hands forced by geopolitics, and not pure altruism? Say it isn't so.
sippingabonedry··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
Which is easy to do when you live an authoritarian state with plenty of vast desert wastelands to erect solar/wind farms. Was there a village there last week? Not anymore, it was in the way. And best of all they can build it all with Uyghur forced labor. Accolades for China all around!
sippingabonedry··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
> Just because funding for the infrastructure keeps getting derailed, delayed and lied about by bad actors

Speaking of infrastructure, how about pushing a mass rollout of EVs before giving a single consideration as to where the charging infra would come from?

sippingabonedry··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
Until the sun goes down at night or the wind stops blowing. You ignored the word "output".

> Energy storage is required along with solar farms

How many batteries are we going to need for that? They literally just figured out how to get the child slaves in the Congo out of the supply chain with a shift to LFP.

sippingabonedry··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
> All this will do is cancel out progess China and Europe is making on renewals

China brought 50 new coal plants online in 2025 alone but keep telling yourself that.

sippingabonedry··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
Sorry but you can't have EVs everywhere, WA and CA banning natural gas for heat and cooking, WA and OR sabotaging hydro plant output for salmon habitat restoration, while shutting down your most reliable sources of power. The math does not add up.

Solar and wind output is not constant or reliable. NIMBYs sabotaged nuclear years ago. It takes how many years to bring a new plant online?

A lot of feel-good rules and regs were passed, pushing a massive shift to electric power, with no consideration as to where the additional power would come from.

You can't wave your arms like a Peanuts cartoon and have all that extra power appear, which is the logic that was used in passing many of these impractical regulations.

sippingabonedry··on Btrfs/ZFS/bcachefs under workloads classic benchmarks skip
If I'm forced to use Linux, sure.

I could drop bricks on and cord pull those all day and they would not lose data. Which is a small ask for a filesystem IMO.

sippingabonedry··on Btrfs/ZFS/bcachefs under workloads classic benchmarks skip
So two filesystems that are essentially shunned from the Linux kernel and permanent second-class citizens, and one that was removed from Red Hat and has a questionable history of reliability. Oh boy which do I choose?

I'm saying ZFS on another OS.

> Well, the basic idea of it is not so bad.

It's textbook extortion.

> so telling a business when we’re unhappy and influencing their reputation is the feedback mechanism we have at our disposal.

Telling a business we're going to fuck you up unless you send our friends work, even by implication, is literally extortion.

HN needing an explanation of how protection rackets work is like looking up money laundering in the dictionary in Office Space.
sippingabonedry··on A coffee shop owner used AI to make a menu poster. Then came the angry DMs
> If a menu has pictures, I expect the food to look like the picture.

Has food ever looked like the picture, though? I find this position unrealistic outside of an Amazon return excuse.

sippingabonedry··on A coffee shop owner used AI to make a menu poster. Then came the angry DMs
I have some bad news for you:

• The pictures on cereal boxes aren't entirely real, either. They use school glue, not milk.

• Your burger has never looked like the one on the menu (see Falling Down)

• I've never eaten at a Chinese takeaway where the food looked like the light-up menu board, either.

How has AI art made your food meaningfully less delicious?

sippingabonedry··on A coffee shop owner used AI to make a menu poster. Then came the angry DMs
Spending the money you would have wasted on a flaky local artist to draw an overpriced disposable sandwich board on better coffee beans.

The entitlement is off the charts. The more I read this insanity, the more I hope she printed it at Walmart with a discount coupon.

sippingabonedry··on An update on Wayback Machine access
How do you separate the Wayback Machine from malicious bots that pretend to be the Wayback Machine? Are you whitelisting their IP blocks?

Because I get a ton of scraper requests that forge Googlebot, Bing, and Yandex user-agents that are totally not coming from their IP ranges. In fact, sometimes they all come from the same IP...

sippingabonedry··on GEFS on OpenBSD: A Early Preview
Yeah that's not how filesystems are supposed to work.

You should be able to dd /dev/zero to a file and not worry about the entire filesystem shitting the bed.

sippingabonedry··on GEFS on OpenBSD: A Early Preview
> I dropped btrfs after the second time it hosed my rootfs

btrfs fans use the "you're using it wrong" excuse a lot.

I recall a failure mode that activated when you fill the FS to 100% and their response was "you should never fill a filesystem to capacity"
