siphor··on A year later, Equifax has faced little fallout from losing data
anyone know why there hasn't been a class action lawsuit around this?

If individuals could win....

siphor··on I wrote a negative Yelp review and it made my life a nightmare
I just went through the documents and that doesn't seem to be the case... Doc #43 is a request to the judge to remove Doc #24 due to HIPPA violations. Doc #24s not there anymore. Pretty interesting, and the tabloid seems to be accurate.

The most damning thing in there was that the Doctor tested for HHV-6 (something 100% of humans have) and then charged for it and claimed it was HHV-2 (genital herpes). Theres apparently a lab technician available to testify that the Doctor commonly tests for HHV-6. Guy seems sleazy

siphor··on How a Medical Catastrophe Can Bankrupt a Life
For a second yeah, i think that's what's supposed to happen.. It rattles, I get scared, I avoid it. nature in action. They're hard to see though. But, if you're in an area with them, it's very possible to be bitten. Definitely rare, but possible.
siphor··on How a Medical Catastrophe Can Bankrupt a Life
In the past year I had one rattle at me on a hiking trail, and almost walked into one on a paved path that hundreds of people walk on... You're quite wrong.
siphor··on iOS 11's Misleading "Off-Ish" Setting for Radios Is Bad for User Security
Since it turns back on automatically at 5am, I have to remember to hard turn it off, otherwise it connects my alarm to my living room bluetooth speaker. Took me a couple days to figure out what was happening. Frustrating for me.
siphor··on Roman Ruins Found in France Are Called ‘Exceptional’
According to various rome tours i recently did:

Those tiles aren't surface level like ours are, each spot in the mosaic is more like a rod, and it goes down a couple inches.

siphor··on Two days in an underwater cave running out of oxygen
> Should we strive for an equal society? As such, shouldn't all children be born with equally (or minimally) committed parents?

I wasn't sure what you meant by "equal society," everyones different, the only way to get "equal" where all children have "equally" committed parents, would be quite homogenous.

The main point I think I'll reiterate, is that yes, you are assuming the amount of risk this person took. The amount of risk involved goes down the more you know about something. This person definitely knows more than you about the sport of cave diving, and can better judge the amount of risk involved. I think that's all I'm trying to say. You can do something that seems dangerous to outsiders, quite safely.

And I also think that lessons from one sport, or activity, apply to other areas of life.

siphor··on Two days in an underwater cave running out of oxygen
What? This comment reads to me that you want a homogenous society... The people who do great things take big risks. Shit happens. This is a thread for startups, where many people eschew the "safe" corporate jobs in order to create or do something that many people don't think are possible.

You're reading about an accident, and then assuming the amount of risk involved without knowing anything about the sport. Accidents happen all the time, in all sorts of ways. It's very possible to do something like this and have a large safety margin, as has been shown by his 24yr history of doing it. Someone who is this experienced at what they do, in a dangerous seeming sport, will be very well aware of possible mistakes, and how to mitigate them. I personally think teaching your child to be "safe" and not take "risks" is kind of stupid. I'd much rather teach my child to learn how to push the limits intelligently, and see what in this world is possible.

siphor··on UIDebuggingInformationOverlay
You don't need to embed a binary framework for Reveal. And I think it's still a lot better than the Xcode tool..

I like using it to fine tune the positions of views instead of guessing and re-running which happens occasionally. (Can't do that w/ Xcodes built in tool)

siphor··on Bose Headphones Spy on Users, Lawsuit Says
Their example of 'shared it with marketing companies, including a San Francisco firm called Segment whose website offers to "collect all or your customer customer data and send it anywhere."'

Thats just an analytics provider.. I wonder if this claim is true, based on that example. Bose could just be collecting app logins, crashes, looking for usability pain-points, etc. Consulting agencies just throw that crap everywhere because it sounds good to a client.

siphor··on Unplanned Freefall? Some Survival Tips
I tried this on a ~60ft cliff jump and punched myself in the eye. Also got the wind knocked out of me
siphor··on Welcome, ACLU
Why doesn't she qualify for naturalization (married to a u.s. citizen?)
siphor··on Theranos reportedly laying off 41% of its workforce
I think skin in the game is proportional to net worth... as a percentage of net worth, I'd bet employees put more skin in the game.

If some unfortunate VC tied 100% of their assets in this, which was tied to 100% of some direct persons money, then that'd suck for sure. Not likely though.

siphor··on Moving Forward on Basic Income
Well, it's a study... I can totally see giving someone $1200 once will not going to food and shelter. But just maybe, over time, it'll relieve what may be a sense of hopelessness, or other complex social factors that leads people to poor decisions. And it may not help for 100% of people in that socieconomic bracket, but optimistically I think it could help a large number of people get out of a bad cycle.
siphor··on Moving Forward on Basic Income
There's only one way to study something like this.. and that's to do it. 5 years is a pretty amazing amount of time and I'm sure some great data will come out of it. Some smart people will probably treat it as a short-term thing and treat it as such, but the majority of the population are probably short sighted and will treat it as if it will be there forever. You can do a lot in 5 years.
siphor··on Moving Forward on Basic Income
It's 5 years. Outlined in the link below

siphor··on Why winners become cheaters
I don't know a ton about this stuff, but:

Isn't it because things like steroids are dangerous and have serious adverse effects, and athletes shouldn't have to endanger themselves in that way, just to stay relevant.

siphor··on The collaboration curse
I listen to the same playlist over and over again (used to be pandora, but changed to spotify discover weekly). Literally don't hear a single song until i listen to it at the end of the week at home.
siphor··on The collaboration curse
If you like music, I can't recommend enough Bose qc-25 headphones. They make it so I can actually focus in a noisy environment.
siphor··on Grisly find suggests humans inhabited Arctic 45,000 years ago
I like the comparison, maybe there was even a political reason for telling people they'd fall off the earth if they tried to go somewhere..
siphor··on How Police Officers Seize Cash from Innocent Americans
Why is it unreasonable to make 11k in tip money? tips are usually cash.... I have bartender friends who make a ton of cash.

Yea, does seem pretty foolish that he checked it. But how is that related to anything about the police seizing it?

siphor··on PayPal and zero-dollar invoice spam
Wow I love this idea! Can't believe I haven't thought of it

siphor··on Gaps in Alumni Earnings Stand Out in Release of College Data
It doesn't look like that graph is averaged per student, so thats why a lot of big public schools are on there...
siphor··on Destroying Apple’s Legacy
Wow, I thought adding music to your library made it available offline - just realized it didn't (I probably should've noticed)

Even with your cue it took me awhile to find that setting, which is included with the sorting (Under My Music/Library, Arrow is next to the default sort of 'Artists')

siphor··on U.S. Embassy in Cuba Reopens After More Than 50 Years
Not sure if this is what you meant by 50 yr old tech, but I thought this was an interesting side effect. They probably know more about fixing these cars than anyone else. http://mashable.com/2014/12/25/cuba-classic-cars/
siphor··on Peter Thiel on what works at work (2014)
ya'll are taking this maxim and removing it from the context of hiring. I thought it was obvious he meant, you want someone capable and someone you could be friends with. It's not supposed to be a maxim, it's from an interview.
siphor··on Last.fm is ending their streaming radio service in April
i thoroughly enjoy 8tracks.com
siphor··on What I've Learned From Female Founders So Far
I was kind of disappointed by this article, I was expecting some information about things that women stereotypically do better than men in regards to starting a company. (If you've found something like this I'd be really interested to hear it!) Some traits that men, stereotypically, can learn from (or even vice versa). Instead it's just outreach drivel, (which is not what the title implies)
siphor··on Doctor: ADHD, as currently defined, does not exist
To play devils advocate, I think its possible that ADHD as a title is more harmful. Letting people fall into a self-fulfilling prophecy that may or may not have occurred otherwise.

You say you were more than talented enough to finish said work in 5-6 hours but couldn't. To me that sounds like you thoroughly did not enjoy it and thus got distracted and 'procrastinated'. Why did you choose to work in an office if it was making you so unhappy?

It sounds like the drugs helped you live your life in an office setting, and is helping you get your life on that specific track.

I personally think there are a lot of societal pressures that makes one feel forced into a situation where they do not thrive.

But everyone around says that `you` have a specific problem. Why can't it be the other way around, everyone else doesn't fit to you?

These drugs seem to work great to make you live like everyone else. But why is that good? More boldly, why are the ADHD symptoms bad? Some of the most successful people probably exhibit these symptoms.
